How It's Made -- Animation

In the golden years of animated film, teams of animators would draw every single illustration by hand. Today they do much of their work by computer but that doesn’t mean it is less artistic. Discovery Channel takes a look into how modern animators work on their animation. Seen on http://www.xenvideo.com/2007/07/21/animation-hows-it-made/ ...

hmm, this must be several years old as her description of how the animator lip syncs the caracters' mouth to the audio file is dated.
now-a-days it is much more automated, by software being able to analyze a audio file and pick out the phenomes automatically. yes, tweaking is still involved but it is much more streamlined. Heck, even Valve software (of Half Life fame) uses this technique in their video game engine.

qruel, Maybe for budget animation, like tv series, but I think movies tend to stick with a mostly hand edited animation.

The title on this is also a bit off, this should have been labled as CG animation. I clicked on it thinking I would either see current day cartoon or anime animation. As I was watching, I thought it was steering twards cell animation, but now I know its just a badly titled sift.

perhaps, but all the films I've read up on in the last several years use mocap and then tweak performances by hand. none of the films I've read about have done what she's talking about with syncing the mouth and audio file by hand.
seriously for $500 (and upwards of several thousands $$) you can buy a software plugin for your 3d app that analyzes the audio clip and does the mouth morphs for you. you'd still want to "tweak" by hand. like i said, that same feature is in my $40 video game editor.

This is an old video, for one notice the very small monitors...usually everything today is nice big LCD monitors...even at the small shops. But that's not the big thing that dates this, but the software. That's SoftImage they're using there...which has been updated many times and is called XSI now.

XSI still is a very nice package to work with. Very elegant UI.
