Handfeeding a Hummingbird

This very short video is made up of close shots of a fellow who trained his local hummingbirds to drink from and sit on his hand. Such sweet little birds.

Sweet little birds?!! You perhaps don't know how territorial these little buggers can be! (And yes, they look sweet when there is only one around.)

Interesting factoid I read in OMNI magazine years ago. A biologist was describing the internal workings of hummingbirds. Because their metabolisms are so fast, they actually have a series of stomachs -- one to collect food, the next to digest it. He described hummingbirds as being essentially very fast, very small flying cows.

Well, most birds are very, very territorial. My parents had aviaries when I was young, and birds are absolutely vicious to each other. Everything from innocent looking zebra finches to lovebirds to parrots: any bird who gets hurt, any overcrowding, any newly introduced birds: attack.
