Kruposays...Dunno about the "nutbags" tag; they come off pretty nice actually. Oh wait, I get it... they're not Catholic. One day they'll learn the Way. <wide big grin>
My grin slowly dissolved into a bit of horror as I realized there *is* a nutbags part, here are my highlights:
I'd probably be kicked out of there within a week. (19 minutes in) No alcohol? Scratch that... much earlier. Wait, how the heck can you go to Communion? Ah yes, they're not Catholic. <shrug>
20:40 - what? that's weak theology. I could totally kick that theologians ass...umptions. Oh man - worst 21:50 -> worst science teacher EVAR.
24 min... man, I did debating... but I totally see how incredibly annoying that can make you.
26:20 - "As-bes-toes"
26:45 - "Tunnels" - "the concept of riding on electricity" - dude, it's just a freakin' subway. Whoa.
28:10 - Using religion to fight estate taxes.... WHAT????????????????? Have they heard of "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar." Ugh.
31:15 - 'women are inferior in all aspects of life, based on ultimate frisbee'
32:50 - 'lost of other things too' ... oh, not what we were expecting. ... oh wait, yup, 33:20.. public shaming. Roommate = snitchy. Smooth.
38 minutes - "if you want to be president" -> um, do they know how much blow Bush II did? Just asking...
40:55... doing the wave with campaign signs. Cute.
41:15-35 - gun rights? Iraqis were and are heavily armed, and yet they had tyrrany. Just saying...
43:20 - 'guess we could've made a few more phonecalls' - IT'S YOUR FAULT!
44:56 - 'that flag still flying' - okay, so WHO would dare take it down? Honestly.
46:20 - in conclusion, the architect they hired was incredibly uninspired.
General observations:
- Key difference between American and Canadian conservatives is liquor consumption.
- The narration makes it feel like a weird National Geographic special or something. I'm guessing the British did a social study of some sort with this video?
- PHC ~= THC. Tee hee
bamdrewsays...... sure are a lot of white people in this video...
thanks for another interesting post hamfist. not quite as awkward/diabolical as this, http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=vision&taxid=23855&element_id=2140018549
one thing I want to note is that religion does tend to make people happy, as measured in many ways (this coming from a non-religious person).
my problem; critical thinking is almost never valued in christianity, and its the most important thing I learned in college. you can't just accept what people tell you in college, or in the real world, you have to learn to question whats going on.
HAMFISTsays...thanks for the highlights and the bizarre-o jesus camp video.
"we kickin' it for christ!"
Kruposays...Yeah, I noticed the whiteness. I think I saw one or two Asians out of the whole crowd, and nobody(?) with darker skin tones.
btw, bamdrew, you need to be exposed to more Catholics. They generally prize critical thinking much more greatly (exhibit A: my comments above [grin])
The Jesus Camp video:
"Warlocks are enemies of God ... Harry Potter would've been put to death (in the Old Testament" Yep... the variety.com video actually disturbed me MUCH more than this documentary
BTW, hamfist, you're allowed to vote for your own vid.
HorsSujetsays...How many can speak a foreign language? How many have ever been out of the country? How many know someone from a different culture? How many have ever taken personal responsibilities beyond respecting taboos? What kind of a learning environment is a fanatical-technocrat factory? The whole point of being in a diverse environment is to be able to defend your beliefs in the face of differences of opinion, not to merely learn rethorical techniques to impose them in the public arena...
Besides, what kind of badge of safety is it that someone has been homeschooled? Sure, the public education system in the US is a disgrace, but does putting a child's education entirely in the hands of parents who aren't necessarily qualified and who mix a lot of different functions (isn't part of the point of having teachers to learn to interact with adults who aren't related to you) guarantee a well rounded education?
