alien_conceptsays...Only just been given the first book which I'm two-thirds of the way through. Love it when I catch on late to an amazing book series, hopefully the new one won't be out 'til I finish the rest of them

GDGDsays...Do not say such things!
Releases:
Book 3: November, 2000
Book 4: November, 2005 - became so large while he was writing it, that it became unwieldy and publishers would have had to raise the end cost too much to be able to produce such a large book. Instead of splitting the book in half, leaving you hanging, he decided to split the book up by characters, so that you had the full story of those characters. On tour for this book, Mr. Martin said at the signing that I went to, that he would hope to have the next book (the other half of characters) out, by about the same time next year. 4 years later we are beginning the 5th year without it's release.
It is also thought that the series has gone from a planned 6 books, to a suspected 9 (as he continues to write).

Drachen_Jagersays...I don't think this will work as a TV series. The plot is too complex and depressing for a mainstream audience.

You know what's going to happen don't you? He's getting pretty old, at that rate he's going to die before he finishes
GDGDsays...Luckily it is on HBO

I know, and it preemptively fills me with sorrow.

mgittlesays...There's also this newer, longer trailer if you guys missed it:

And yes...I think HBO is doing this series because only HBO can pull it off. It wouldn't work as a series of movies, and it wouldn't work with a network TV budget or a network audience. I am interested to see how they end the first season, though...
Drachen_Jagersays...Yeah, I thought it was pretty good at that point too. I rarely quit a series after several books but this one was just too depressing.

Lots of people enjoy the fact that the story isn't constantly "happily ever after" bullshit (including myself). Plus, he's got several books to have a happy ending...or not. Either way I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
