Fallout 3 - 2003 Tech Demo

A short tech demo of Fallout 3 that Black Isle released back in 2003 before the company went under. It looked like a dream come true for most fans, but sadly it seems that this version has been scrapped and Bethesda is working on something new from the ground up. Hopefully it will be a worthy successor.

Also of note, there's another Fallout 3 video floating around showcasing the graphics a bit more, including the day-night cycle. Unfortunately I couldn't find that one anywhere . . .

The fanboys at No Mutants Allowed are pathetic trolls. They do nothing but sit around on their forums and bitch about anything that isn't their precious turn-based RPG. I think they are already bitching that Bethesda's ruining the franchise, assuming that it's going to be like Oblivion. They are probably going ape shit bitching that this looks more like it has a real-time battle system in it.

God forbid that Interplay tried to do ANYTHING else with the Fallout license to try to make some badly needed cash. This Black Isle alpha wasn't anywhere close to being ready (you can now download the alpha at NMA, which I'm sure must violate some non disclosure agreement somewhere), and due to a lot of earlier missteps by Interplay there just wasn't money to finish it.

Interplay made a lot of mistakes, and their demise was inevitable, but the fury from the NMA forums when they tried to do anything that wasn't turn-based Fallout 3 bordered (and still borders) on the pathetic. Fallout was a great game! I'd love to see a proper sequel too! But it was 10 years ago! Get out of your parents' basements and get over it!

Wow, I never realized there was so much controversy surrounding it.

I do think that it would be best to stick to the old 3rd-person perspective myself. We have several nice first-person RPGs already, and I think that Fallout is better suited in its original form. However, I have no objection to making combat realtime, as long as it's done right. The ideas in this video show some promise. Still, I wouldn't mind if the final game were turn-based. There are just as many advantages to a turn-based game as there are for a realtime game.

As for Bethesda, I have my reservations about it producing the game, but they do show a lot of dedication, as is apparent in the Elder Scrolls games, so I'm remaining optimistic.

However, one thing I would NOT care for would be a Fallout MMO. I'm against that in every way.

Heh. Well the MMORPG is in the works. But it's being done by Interplay, which as far as I know consists of Herve Caen and maybe his secretary. How they intend on making it with a proposed launch date of April 2009 and a budget of 30 Million dollars that they don't have, I don't know, but that's what they have to do in order to keep the license.

And hey, I would be happier than a pig is sh*t if there were an isometric turn-based RPG in the Fallout universe coming out, but it's not going to happen and the same 150 people constantly griping on a couple of message boards will never make it happen.

I just stopped by there and yeah, they are bitching about Bethesda, saying that it doesn't have the same feel of the original, based on the 3 pieces of concept art that are available at http://fallout.bethsoft.com/ . Their point being that it doesn't have the exact retro 50's sci-fi feel in those images, but they haven't shown much, and those concepts are still sick. But it will NEVER live up to what they want - EVER.

Sorry, they just piss me off.

Yeah, I already know about the MMORPG. It's just an attempt to use the Fallout brand name to garner attention for the product. Maybe it will turn out to be a decent game after all, but that won't change anything. I'll still hate it. I hate all MMORPGs unconditionally.

As for Bethesda's Fallout 3, the new screenshots are quite beautiful, but I don't think they're close enough to show the any discrepancies in relation to the original games. Aircraft carriers were around in the 1950s, as was the White House. While the first two Fallout games took place in California, I don't see why this game shouldn't take place on the East coast. Overall, it seems Bethesda has a good general idea, so I'm not too worried about it.

GAAAAA! Amazing post!

Man I dream about Fallout 3. God I hope Bethesda does it right. I NEVER get into rpgs, and usually only play 1st person shooters, but Fallout is my favorite game of all time.

I'm not a fan of MMORPG's either.

Click on crap to attack it to level up to buy better crap to click on bigger crap to attack it to level up to buy better crap to click on bigger crap to attack it to level up to buy better crap to click on bigger crap to attack it to level up to buy better crap to click on bigger crap to attack it, etc., etc.

I once wrestled an angel of the Lord in order to get Fallout 3 made. He came to me one night to tell me about some big blah blah blah, I said "My friend and I want Fallout 3! I'll wrestle you for it!" and I did, and I won. It was awesome.

Interesting, I never knew this existed. I think Bethesda knocked it out of the park with Fallout 3 and I wonder how the people of that forum felt. I even wonder how the people who commented here back in 2007 felt about it... Maybe if I *promote I'll find out...
