"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin in action - RIP

blankman, how cynical! He inspired folks of all ages to care about wildlife. I think if "pissing off" an endangered animal on tv gets people wanting to save it in the long run...it's worth it.

daphne, it sounded callous the way I phrased it...but think about it.

Tons of folks oppose zoos because it imprisons animals. I believe they ulitmately do good because we see animals up close and care about them. When we care about something...love something, we want to save them.

That's what Stever Irwin was about. He wanted us to care about animals especially the ones that no one else cared about. He got up, close and personal with them so we would love them and want to save them.

Some see him as a showboat and clown, others as a researcher and conservationist. He really was all of those things.

I see, but I'm still not sure if his choice of approach was a sagacious one. Getting up close and personal is one thing, doing it in a dangerous manner and taking risks (ie. upsetting the animal) is another.

My fear is that this: Now that Irwin is dead he has attained a certian god-hood. Kids want to imitate people they admire and love. One might try to agitate a wild animal to "be like Steve Irwin" and get hurt.

I think Jeff Corwin's approach is ideal...but he's too tame for the viral video generation. People like the Jerry Springer-style because it shocks them. Irwin was the Jerry Springer of the animal world.

"Irwin was the Jerry Springer of the animal world." oh, I couldn't disagree with you more.. Jerry Springer was sensational for all the wrong reasons. He has no real love for anything other than the ratings that ultimately lined his pockets.

Irwin had his own style. There really isn't anyone that works in a comparison. He's become a defining image on which others will be compared. :-)
