Sagemindsays...When drawing a cube, when all sides are the same shade, the optical illusion is that on the edge closer to a side with less light (in shadow) the edge will look lighter.
An edge closer to a side with more light (in glare from light) the edge will look darker.
This illusion illustrates the same principal. The eye does amazing things with light so our brains can comprehend.
