Conservatives Blame Unions, CAFE Standards For Auto Collapse

NetRunnersays...

Can't be that they haven't met the market's demands by focusing mostly pickups, SUV's, and luxury cars when the median wage was declining and the price of gas was increasing.

Doesn't help that you'd pretty much have to pay me to live with driving anything the "big three" makes that costs $20k or less, or gets 30mpg (do they have anything that even hits 30mpg right now?).

Sorry guys, but Unions and CAFE ain't what's making them die.

I suppose I'm happy; Republicans still haven't learned that the era of truthiness is on its way out.

One must remember also that alot of auto sales was bankrolled through cheaper financing which collapsed, which just shows how one intrinsic failure lead to massive problems down the line. Bailing out all of them is not feasible.

Upvote for the guy at the end - "The problem is that they're not selling cars people are/want to buy)." GM had the chance to break into the electric car industry over a decade ago, and instead they crushed every single one of the cars once the lease had expired. Rather than releasing a newer generation, they left the technology buried. If they had been producing their all-electric cars at any point over the past 4 years - especially if they had actually been SELLING them - GM would have been one of the most profitable auto makers in the world.

The European divisions of the big 3 seem to be doing fine. Maybe it's because they're building better cars over there that people over there want to buy and drive.

For example, I just went to the Ford's US and UK website and looked up the Ford Focus. The US Focus is only offered with one engine which gets 35MPG highway. The UK focus is offered with 4 different petrol engines ranging from a low of 35 MPG and goes up to 43MPG. They also offer 3 diesel engines with which have MPG ratings from 48 to 66MPG. Why aren't they offering us these cars here in the US?

If they'd offer these cars here, maybe people would begin to realize that they don't need a 300HP sedan or big ass SUV do drive 10 miles to work.

People are getting paid 30-40$ a hour as demanded by the union. They fucking bolt on doors and shit... I personally don't think you should make that much for doing something a trained monkey could do. Half the fucking shit is automated now anyway in gm factories. so they are in actuality paying the fat fucks of the unions to push fucking buttons. Unions should be disbanded imo.

^ Europe also has much higher gas prices helping them think they need smaller vehicles. Not to mention far better mass-transit, and a smaller overall terrain...

But yeah, the non-US branches of GM and Ford are pretty good from what I've heard. I'm not sure Chrysler has a presence to speak of overseas, though.

You wouldn't be working a 40 hour week if it weren't for unions.

You wouldn't get workers comp if it weren't for unions.

Each and every foot of progress made on behalf of the American working class is a result of the unions.

Unions are why companies are taking their business to other countries. It's a failing system. 40 hours a week... people should be working more than 40 hours a week. Workers comp. well that should be more dependant on circumstances. too many people take advantage of work comp in dishonest ways.

They're sending jobs overseas because the workers there are forced to live like dogs and are therefore cheaper and they can get richer.

So what you're saying here is that we should be working like they do overseas. 18 hour days, almost no pay, living in cardboard hovels, starting to work at age 8, etc etc. Is that right Gunter? Careful how you answer, judging by your insight you'll probably be one of them.

I love how people like you read into things and only see exactly what I wasn't saying.

Yeah everyone should be forced to work in sweatshops... obviously you don't know or can even see where I'm coming from. Take a look at Ford. They have a plant in mexico. They work 10-12 hour days, get paid decently, and the community is prospering more than ever in that area. Try and take a look at it from a different perspective now and then. Other than trying to piss someone off by completely misinterpreting what is being said. I will definitely never have to work in a factory seeing as how I make more money than you most likely will, but that's neither here nor there. You fail to realize that these people making 50-60k a year are living off credit like they make 80-100k a year. Which is another reason for our economic decline. If people would stop trying to live a life they can't afford, it would help the economy.

Oh wait I just noticed you are a factory worker.. I'm not even going to waste my time responding to this or you anymore. Biased and most likely one of those people I was talking about.

Says more about you than I could...
