This is a "hack" in the old sense of a "clever trick" or "neat solution".

(The mechanism is that the "sensor bar" of the Wii actually just has infra-red LEDs that the "Wiimote" uses to triangulate your movements with. People have made homemade versions of the bar with LEDs, but this is really the ultimate simple replacement - two candles as IR sources.)
