"Prime Minister Stephen Harper dodged a political bullet Thursday when Governor General Michaelle Jean agreed to prorogue Parliament until Jan. 26, when the minority Conservative government is to return with a quick, new throne speech and a budget designed to tackle the economic downturn.
Jean's decision followed an almost week-long drama in which the three opposition parties had come together on an agreement to defeat Harper as soon as possible and turn the government over to a Liberal-NDP coalition that was to be supported by the Bloc Quebecois for the next 18 months.
The coalition crisis, as some called it, energized Canadian parliamentarians and citizens like few other events in recent memory. Talk-show lines and political websites lit up with concerned commentary; the CBCNews.ca site published more than 15,000 related comments on one day alone."
