All I can see for this is the eventual violent suppresion by the military junta, the international community decrying the events while doing absolutely nothing to stop it.

President Bush talked about promoting democractic progression around the world, here is one struggling to develop and break free from totalitarian rule. What does he do? Ignore it.

He's definitely not doing much to make an enormous difference, but it's invalid to say he's "ignoring" it. In addition to making statements in support of the protesters and asking nations to help influence the Junta to exercise peace, he has imposed economic sanctions, frozen assets, and travel restrictions against the government's senior members.

We have a huge Burmese population where I live, and they are all praying/holding vigils for things to change over there. China has a lot of power to make a difference, if they would impose economic sanctions.

Having seen what empty rhetoric, economic sanctions, travel restrictions have done during Zimbabwe's slide into tyranny, during Rwanda's genocide, and Saddam's rule over Iraq post Gulf War I - I just may be rather cynical of the small actions that the international community is taking with regards to this event.

What exactly do you expect him to do? He has lost virtually all political power due to media coverage of his efforts to help establish a democracy in Iraq. Some may say public opinion was against him, but which came first? The media has discovered they can lead the nation where they think it should go, merely by picking the stories they report and the slant they put on them.

The question you should instead be asking is: Why is the media not pushing Bush to intervene?

Farhad2000says...

Lost political power due to media's coverage in Iraq? What different channels are you watching because as far as I can see the media trumpets whatever the Whitehouse decides to do even when they go against the facts on the ground and are neatly presented by a politicized general. Esclation in forces? No it's a surge! Success in the surge? Drawing down the troops not actually you know... bringing them back because the army is breaking down....

There is solidarity amongst the common people that something has to be done about Burma's violent crackdown, a push for stronger action via the UN beyond empty rhetoric is one, visiting the countries leaders is another. It's not that he is politically cut off from actually doing something, it's more like he sees no need to intervene in an actual struggle for democracy, especially when there is no oil interests.

Farhad2000says...

For me it just clarifies and underlines that the democratic change Bush was trumpeting was nothing but empty rhetoric, malicious lies told so he can start a war.

We know this, but there is a very large subset of the population that still believes we are in Iraq to promote democracy.

WAKE UP AMERICA.
