I'm wondering if at the start, his strikes against the underside of the drum are to warm up his hands for playing.

Every little dip on the hang is a note in a scale - striking the underside creates a chord from all the notes on the scale. Anyone knows if these things are available online? I couldn't find anywhere...

They are only made special order by a company in Bern, Switzerland. So unless you travel there and fork out $5000 you can expect to pay upwards of $12k online if you catch one on eBay

I hate to say it but I really thought the other hang drum video on here a while ago was MUCH more impressive. At least, the sound of the drum itself was more impressive. The thing that really grabbed me about the hang drum is the droning note that sort of hangs in the air while the other notes are being played. I thought this performance or drum was really lacking that.

I am more impressed with the melodic beginning and ending parts of this video. As far as costs go, you have to be CRAZY to pay that kind of money for one of these. Worst case, you could travel there and hand select one for the prices I see listed here. Actually, I can't beleive nobody has "reverse-engineered" this and selling them.
