Aquavista 500

"This new product has been featured in HGTV's I Want That. The patented AQUAVISTA 500 Wall Mounted Aquarium is an ultra-slim (only 4.4 inches thick), self contained aquarium which is hung on the wall like a framed painting. The product combines the elegance of art with proprietary technology to add life to art. Each 6.6 gallon unit comes pre-assembled with advanced filtration, heater, air pump, lighting and an embedded LCD control panel that has automatic timer and thermostat." These fucking things are so wrong... how would you like to be confined to a space that is only 4 inches wide... most fish really only lead happy, long, healthy lives in a natural environment with some sort of cover in which to hide or occasionally seek refuge. No species of fish is going to feel at all secure in its environment in a shallow, predominately vertical space... add to that the fact that 6.6 gallons is not nearly enough water for maintaining a biological filter capable of supporting more than a few small fish in any sort of healthy and productive manner... add to this the fact that most of the assholes who purchase these torture contraptions know next to nothing about what they are doing so, of course, they purchase fish that are not only too large to maintain in 6 gallons of water, but just are too large to live comfortably in such a space...

-edit:
In fact, all the tanks featured in this video are not only waaaay overstocked with fish, but these fish are pretty much all juveniles, and many of them will outgrow these confines (or would, if they were living in a healthy environment. That's another myth (often propagated by the industry), that fish won't outgrow their tanks. Well, actually some will to an extent, but its STUNTING people, stunting of growth that is often accompanied by severe spinal deformities... NOT GOOD!)
end edit-

I have been involved in tropical fishkeeping for over a decade and trust me, I've seen some pretty ugly things happen to fish when they are kept in products that were not designed with the healthy of the fish as a primary requirement... wall hung tanks, bottom lit coffee table tanks, and a plethora of products meant to kill bettas with... bottom line, just because a product is sold as a habitat for fish does not mean it is any kind of good habitat... it is a sad truth that there are companies out there that make these devices only with the goal of profiting off the ignorant... after all, as they would also have you believe, they're just fish.

after thinking about it, i wish i'd have remained neutral in my vote. 4.4 inches?! talk about fish-claustrophobia. at least 5-6 inches is what i would think should be minimum, i mean, the fish aren't 2d... if you want the 'flatscreen television' look for an aquarium, inset a 6 inch tank into the wall...

six inches would still only work with small fish... tetras, etc... but really still not all that well, fish tend to utilize space in a more horizontal fashion, different species gravitate to different levels in a vertical column of water and then exploit the horizontal space of that level... very few species of fish would do well in a primarily vertical space, as they don't generally spend the bulk of their time swimming up and down through levels...

edit\
this, is of course, due to the fact that they physically have to operate their swim bladders to do this and, hey, that's just more work and why expend it unless necessary
/edit
also, there is the issue of cover, fish lead healthier, more productive lives when their environment has about a 50/50 ratio of open water to places to hide, it just makes them feel more secure as it is natural that they should not want to be exposed sometimes.

Anyway, I could go on... this is, by far, the dorkiest of all my dorky hobbies.
