An anthropological introduction to YouTube

From the "Web is using us" guy... tracing all that's happened since Numa Numa Guy burst onto the scene.

Long, but well worth the watch.

The thing that strikes me most about it is how YouTube and even the Sift are new ways for people to meet and interact.

We love it because it has become very difficult for us to meet and interact in real life.

The biggest reason for that, in my opinion, is that there are no more "commons." Almost everything is owned by someone or fenced off or delegated for only very special uses. There are good reasons for much of this to be sure, but nontheless there are very very few places now where people can go for the sole purpose of interaction.

The internet and YouTube are fulfilling that need.
