grintersays...I can't decide whether this is good or bad for Peruvian alpaca farmers.
Llamasays...My alpaca wool sweater comes from Peru, near Machu Picchu. If it makes you feel better, I'm not supporting the California alpaca wool economy!

Vicuña is softer, I believe. Peruvian camelids, they've never been domesticated. The high price of the wool ($1500-3000/yd) comes from the fact that they live up in the Andes and can only be shorn once every three or four years.
