So the kid grows up to become the Grinch in a shitty consumerist world where no one gives a fuck. Doesn't sound scary or bad, it just sounds realistic.

Every single person I know more than casually "give a fuck" about others and the world at large. Even people who pretend not to. If all the people you know are selfish consumerist dicks, I think that says more about you and your friends, than the world.
