I have been a silent follower of the sift for a long time. After seeing the absurd comment by alizarin above, I had to join.

"Common for doctors to order all the tests they can. . . if the patient has insurance"? Where are you getting your facts to back up this absurd statement? Intensive care physicians are pretty much all *hospital employees* and see NONE of the "revenue" that may be generated by ordering additional tests. They are not usually private practice docs. What then would be their motivation to order more tests? Exactly! There is none.

"...Abandon people who dont." Again, where is the evidence for this claim? The fact is, if you walk into the ER or find yourself in the ICU, physicians are required to treat you. Hospital physicians in the ER and ICU don't typically know what kind of insurance the patient has, nor do they care. They are salaried hospital employees! Why would it matter to them? Exactly! It doesnt.
