4.5 Billion Years in 1 Hour

newtboy says...

Tell me everything that’s happened until now.

First the earth cooled.
Then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat and died and made oil.
Then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzs.
Then Prince Charles started wearing Lady Di’s clothes. I couldn’t believe it! He just put on her best dress and walked into town!

Points for the first person to identify this short history of earth

Some Humans are AOK

You know you're a city planner when the first thing you think is, "Wow, that street is way too big."

Copter Pack

BSR says...

The music is a little more dramatic than what's going on I think. Kinda like wearing shoes that are too big for the feet.

Do your hands always need to be on the controls at all times? How easy is it to recover from let's say an unexpected seagull attack or a bee swarm? How would you handle an itchy nose? Can you wave to a babe on the beach to get her attention?

Too many unanswered questions for me to buy one.

Guy has a truly horrible airport experience

cloudballoon says...

Let AA die already. Unlike many other countries, there's no monopoly/"too big to fail" companies in the aviation industry in America afaik. It's not that hard to let other companies to absorb AA's passenger capacity, especially in 2020. The employees are "arguably" worth the tax payer support through unemployment/Covid benefits to carry them over, but that's it. All these tax money that goes to direct to the company (i.e. the executives/upper management) instead of to the employees (none-stock holding kind) is always bad policy (read: corruption).

Do You Regret All Your Lying?

BSR says...

I'm saying his love for his family and friends is what he is afraid of losing. That's a pretty big problem. How he handles it depends on if he gets burnt. Maybe it's too big of a leap for him, I don't know.

All I do know is, there is a glimmer of hope with him.

Edit:

I don't advocate lying. That is his choice. The only thing that may change him will be his lies coming back on him. I say, "Let it be. Speaking words of wisdom, Let it be."

newtboy said:

I'm still confused.
Are you advocating sticking with a lie so as to not alienate family?
If so, I can't retract. If I misunderstand and that's not your position, yes, I retract and will redact if you wish.
Please clarify.

Many will die shortly

wtfcaniuse says...

Pretty sure those are trees or shrubs, I can't see anything that is obviously a person on the dam wall. They move a lot quicker than the people near the bottom and they seem far too big. They might be cattle or something as Dandyman suggested but I don't think they're people. Impossible to say for sure.

I don't mean to be callous but it wasn't until I noticed the people and the car that I was able to get an idea of the scale of the collapse. The trees and buildings don't really give a sense of scale like the people did.

R.I.P.

Actually, it looks like there are people on the dam itself. If you look center/right on the hill, it appears there are multiple figures starting to run when it breaks.

Response to Trump's Video Game Montage - #GameOn

newtboy says...

Ok, it just seemed odd in a video responding to Trump's m rated game video. It made sense to me to counter that with a g rated game video with no violence at all. Granted, this is more honest in it's depiction of games in general, but doesn't juxtapose as strongly.

I fully agree with your second point, and I note it's most often the right making the case that the government needs to ban things already restricted for adults only...for the children...abdicating their parental responsibility and adult rights to the same government they say is too big, too powerful, too out of control, and incapable of ever functioning properly. Odd that.

ChaosEngine said:

Because violence is a part of life and games reflect that, the same as movies, books, tv, etc.

It would be nice if the “non-gamer” part of society would grow up and finally realise that games aren’t just for kids. If you want to ban violent games, you have to ban the Godfather, the Lord of the Flies, Breaking Bad and Guernica.

the problem with too much empathy

eric3579 says...

This may be true sometimes but peoples lack of empathy (which is growing in the US imo) is a FAR greater problem for us than the few places empathy and pc culture has run amuck. Also this is such a huge topic and very nuanced. Most all things in life turned up to 11 become problematic. I surely don't think empathy is anywhere near that point overall. Matter of fact i see countries with more empathetic polices towards it's people have happier healthier better lives than us here in the good ol USA. Im probably rambling now. Too big a subject for a comment thread. Makes my head race out of control.

Scaling A Climbing Wall With No Hands

Good job, great balance, calves aplenty, but "Proof"? The holds are closer together than the ones on the Kiddy Klimber for under 5's at the Dixie Mall, so you might want to check the "Too Big for This Ride" ruler at the entrance. Today's challenge - how about a 5.5? Have fun!

Rex Murphy | Free speech on campus

diego says...

i agree that, generally speaking, the best way to deal with stupidity is to let it expose and screw itself. but there is definitely a limit to that, a point where the stupid becomes too big to stop, and you have to take a stand before its too late.

I dont think that was the case here (though all I know of peterson is what was in the CBC article). But I would definitely protest if my university was paying an idiot a ton of money to give a speech where they could make themselves look smart; and lets not be naive, for all the calls for "free speech" and "debate", usually these speakers take few questions and dodge anything critical with the host moderators protecting them from embarrassment. So if my university wants to pay kissinger or hillary hundreds of thousands of dollars to talk about human rights or ethics, yes I would protest that...

this guy is small fry and is basically looking for it to validate his position, as the article stated other speakers declined precisely because they could foresee that the free speech vs political correctness summit having a speaker whose contribution to the discussion is: "[he] does not recognize another person's right to determine what pronouns he uses to address them." I dont care what whose beliefs are, if you dont want to call someone how they want to be called, you are looking for a fight. and if the other person does not recognize your right to self determine how to address them?! Wow, so deep. this is really what university is for!

my response also comes from a recent discussion elsewhere, regarding the pervasiveness/frequency of the "safe space, snowflake, trigger warning" phenomena that occasionally comes up in videos like these. how many people actually have personal experiences, even indirectly, with professors giving trigger warnings or of a safe space? i have several professors in my circle of friends and family and none have ever witnessed it.

I don't mind Rex's appearance, and I can say I usually agree -- and intrigued when I don't -- with his views, but what irk me most about watching his shows lately (that is, about the past 4~5 years) is his creeping smug delivery. It isn't showing in this particular segment though. But man... when he does it, I always goes "Is this at all necessary?"

Back to the topic at hand. Progressives really needs to get its act together. Juvenile crap like these zerg rushes are not serving anyone or any worthy causes. Just more ammunition for the Right to dismiss your argument.

You think Peterson's a wacko? Then let him talk all he wants to let others form their opinion that he's a wacko. I'd rather listen to him and try to figure out what the hell made him act/talk that way then give him the opportunity to say he's a PC "victim."

The Big Short - "Jenga"

StukaFox says...

This movie should be required viewing for every American.

So should "The Smartest Guys in the Room" as well as HBO's "Too Big To Fail".

Followed by "Zootopia" just because I like that movie a lot.

Woman Refuses to Leave Uber Car

newtboy says...

1)Yes, but it's the recourse when your expectations aren't met that I'm discussing. Also, the base level of service is lower for Uber than a licensed taxi, no?

2)Yes, that's exactly what I mean...they aren't regulated taxis, they are basically operating illegally everywhere, but abused loopholes and used misrepresentation to gain a foothold, then grew too fast to control...or just were ignored until they took enough work from licensed taxi drivers, and now they're being considered 'too big to fail' and still allowed to operate in most places (not all). I would never use them for exactly that reason...as essentially black market taxis, I would expect little insurance against improper service or damage. It's not JUST the drivers, they also treat the rule of law with contempt. Why would one not expect them to treat customers with the same distain and carelessness?

ChaosEngine said:

1)Sorry, but no. There's still a base level of service to be expected.

2) I 100% disagree with this. Uber is a taxi service, just a really poorly run one. They've just started in my hometown and they are actually encouraging drivers to break the law. In NZ, you are legally required to have a passenger endorsement to carry passengers for profit, but Uber just told their drivers "eh, don't worry about it, you'll be sweet" and then left them twisting in the wind when the government went "er, no, we weren't fucking joking", and started clamping down.

Frankly, the more I learn about Uber, the less I am inclined to use their service. I like some of what they're doing, but it's complete bullshit they way they treat their drivers.
