Travel channel covers the Google workplace!

I wish more employers understood that if you take good care of your employees and don't treat them like slaves that you'd get more productive work out of them and they'll want to stay at work longer!

and yet Google can't find a way to keep talent from leaving for facebook. i list probably 10-15 extremely high profile employees that left google for facebook. one guy was offered $500k raise and $5mill bonus to stay, he still left for facebook.

I think I would still like to work at Google rather than Facebook, just because of their open source appreciation.
facebook are also pretty big advocates of opensource. after all they opensourced hiphop and they are major backers and users of memcache.

but yes, I'd also would rather work at Google. as a matter of fact, Google, if you are reading this, (and i know you are), i'll do anything to work at Google. take a pay cut, or forfit any perks or do anything else for an opportunity to work there.

The most nerdy thing you want to have-Star Trek Touchscreen

dan00108 says...

I'm not a fan of Star Trek although I watched some of the shows and movies, so I don't recognize this interface but it is f*^g beautiful. It's clear this man put a lot of effort in it. On youtube he said things are hard coded and personalized for what he needs. Also he may open source it in the future.
I so want that in my future home!
Wish I could *promote and *quality

Dan Rathers on CNN Voting Machine Fraud

NordlichReiter says...

Of course the machines are not secure, or reliable.

There's no single point of failure in the security setting, and the posture is fucking horrendous.

The machines are not being controlled in a MAC or RBAC setup. I get the feeling that the physical security is lacking in a huge way. Corporations are being relied upon too heavily to sort this stuff out. Diebold was a joke, and still is.

These machines should be made in the United States, and the United States only. This is not some nationalistic joke. It is a United States issue, and should be solved by resources based in the United States.

I'm sure someone will say, "if you make it open source then anyone can make these machines." To which I say only certified machines approved by rigorous process will be allowed to be used in the United States votes. Some very good alternative software have come from well meaning open source communities. Multiple flavors of Linux come to mind.

I'm sure we would need to put in place some very strong punishment for fraud, while not being too tyrannical.

Here's a list of things I would start with.

  1. Multiple Independent QA Tests

  2. Multiple Independent Security Certification Tests

  3. Multiple Independent Source Code Reviews

  4. Secure Source Code

    • No Buffer Overflows

    • No Format String Flaws

  5. Full Disclosure

    • Source Code Released to the Public. From Firmware to Operating System code.

    • Manufacture Process made Transparent

I've been running Linux on my production machine for 2 years now, after trying it out for a year before that. For out-of-the-box usability, there are several distros that are very close to Windows or OSX and even surpass them in some ways. Ubuntu is a great place to start.

And let's not forget that open-source goes way beyond Linux. OpenOffice, the GIMP image editor, Inkscape vector editor, Pidgin IM, Audacity audio editor, Firefox, Thunderbird... there is a huge list of FOSS applications that can do just about anything you want.

Games, agreed, are more problematic on Linux, but as Tymbrwulf mentioned that is a function of the userbase, if it does catch on the way Firefox did, you can be sure that there will be a lot of Linux game releases. Meanwhile games and proprietary software can be run in VirtualBox.

This comment here pretty much sums up why Linux is still having difficulty even treading water as a desktop.

Or here for your reading pleasure
1. Confusing distros Absolutely identical results if you ask someone using Windows or MacOS for the first time.
2. Poor documentation Distro-dependent
3. Software, Software, Software will come with time and interest, the userbase is nowhere NEAR Windows/MacOS, therefor not everything is supported...yet
4. Little support (if not openly hostile) Outright lies. I've been able to troubleshoot all of my problems through the help of forums and google.
5. Ways of doing things that are confusing to a Windows user Same as #1 Which brings me to:
6. Still too much reliance on the command line interface This can be argued according to which distro you use.

Fix'd.

Minecraft Enterprise NCC-1701-A Walk Around

steroidg says...

OSX?! Why in Q's name would the enterprise run a proprietary OS? It's pretty much against the practice and philosophy of Star Trek. I never heard anyone calling up tech support for a computer bug. You fix it your self, and the only way to do it is open source.

@kronosposeidon, only time will tell whether html5 will replace Flash. The plus for html5 is it's open source which allows for a huge amount of people to contribute to the development of the actual platform, unlike Adobe. However Flash has been around for a long time and continues to innovate. It's hard to say at the moment.

@dag, au contrair, mon ami. You don't have to pay a penny to download FlashDevelop or Eclipse and add the Flex SDK. That's about as open source as it gets. And Flash introduced a new XML based .XFL file, which is a folder structure with assets and text documents. You may need Flash CS5 to compile it still; that I don't know. But, it appears to allow for open source editing of the files.

One thing no one has mentioned is how integrated the Adobe products are, so you can go between things like After Effects and Flash. You can import layered PSDs to each. You can't do any of that with html 5. I think most people who don't use Flash see it only as a web platform, but it's always been more.

@budzos, I agree with you. You shouldn't feel obligated to give an autograph to anyone. However, this was the grand opening of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue, which implies that Jobs is there for PR. Whether signing autographs for fans is healthy for PR or not is up to debate.
