300: Making America Great Again

newtboy says...

And a moronic lying blowhard being president accomplishes this....how?
I think it would really galvanize PC people and they would up their game exponentially, with Trump and his supporters being used as the poster child(ren) for why they need to be more vocal and less tolerant of disrespectful insulting xenophobic idiots.

For anyone who votes for Trump to 'destroy the broken system so we can rebuild it'....please tell me when this has EVER worked in history, and not just made things horribly worse.

Judge Dead, 2016 (RIP(?) Antonin Scalia dead at 79)

artician says...

I agree, but I think Scalia stands out for the truly atrocious things he's said in the media, hence more vocal hate.
At the same time, he could have just been drawing the media, or a scapegoat all along, because for all I know those 4 other judges agreeing with him could have said equally as terrible things that didn't reach the general populace.

spawnflagger said:

Not that I agree with Scalia's politics, but those who have so much hate for him have to remember - it takes a majority to reach decisions on the Supreme Court, and that means at least 4 other justices agree with Scalia on every single 5-4 decision that was "the end of the world".
Their only duty is to determine the Constitutionality of a case, not to change the Constitution.
(so all that hate should really be pointed at Congress and/or Executive Actions)

New Rule – For the Love of Bud

VoodooV says...

yeah, but unless you're going to go to the level of attempting to ban alcohol and cigarettes and all the other things that are demonstrably harmful when overdone, there's nothing wrong with what Bill is doing here.

The problem is, Maher is pretty much one of the more vocal spokespeople for legalized marijuana. He's only reinforcing the people who were already supportive. Obviously by the reaction of the Jeb supporter lady, she wasn't convinced or swayed.

One of the things that helped legalization gain strides was the recession. Even conservatives were considering legalizing and taxing it if only to help the budget. Now that the recession is effectively over. That steals some of the urgency away and now they can go back to being against it for ideological reasons, where pragmatism isn't needed as much.

So we need to start publicizing the financial benefits of legalization. It's my understanding that Colorado has been getting tons of new revenue because of legalization, but for some reason, that's not advertised more. Or showing things that dispel the usual myths about marijuana that people have been clinging to for decades.

There is some skepticism from the economics writers, and more so in the Grauniad than the BBC or our local rags, but even there they're more vocal about Greece and close to silent on Britain.

I think the IMF deserves much more scrutiny from the press than it's had

Actually the whole thing reminds me of the 80s and Reaganomics, with the whole group think from the political classes and surprisingly little argument from anyone else.

Maybe they realised how pointless it was to point out the inevitable?

It is a long time ago, and I was quite young, but I don't even remember any Cassandras at the time... certainly our local newspapers all drank the kool-aid.

There are depressingly few journalists who call Osbourne out on his permanent-surplus horseshit....

While we're on the subject, the rhetoric from the left flank of Syriza against austerity seems to be shifting from failed policy to tool of class warfare. Or maybe it's just getting reported more prominently.

The IMF, and Lagarde especially, is also receiving more heat by the day for letting themselves get dragged into this troika business by Strauss-Kahn.

Yet in all this, there still isn't anyone willing to pull the trigger.

They all try to appease the mighty gods of the economy, with austerity chosen as their way of showing penance.

Muslims Interrogate Comedian

newtboy says...

Ahhh....but the Westboro Baptist Church does seem to be (at least in large part) representative of the sentiments of a significant portion of the religion as a whole, they are simply more vocal about it than most at inappropriate times and places.
That said, @shuac has a point, but perhaps should have capitalized SLOWLY. They still seemed to have no sense of humor about themselves.

artician said:

You might be confusing Islam with Militant Extremist Islam. Islam has always been as healthy as any other organized religion could claim to be. To put it into perspective, consider looking at westernized Christianity with the perception that the Westboro Baptist Church was representative of a significant portion of the religion as a whole. That's pretty much the image western culture is given of Islam today, and is just as false.

Why Catholics Can Vote No - Father Bob Pierson

alcom says...

I guess it's the Gospel Church that's considered more vocal.

>> ^xxovercastxx:

>> ^alcom:
Is is just me, or were the pews extremely quiet during this sermon?

In my Catholic experiences, the congregation is expected to keep totally silent except for during specific rituals.
This doesn't look like a typical Catholic church, though: the priest is wearing short sleeves, the walls are sheetrocked, fluorescent lighting, a frickin projector. It's awfully modern looking.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al Found Guilty of War Crimes

dannym3141 says...

I'd be a lot more vocal about these camps if they weren't just a manifestation of the problem we're going to have to face sooner or later. And until we face it, the government(s) will stop illegally torturing and detaining people when THEY decide to.

It has become a matter of common knowledge that politicians disobey laws and rules, cheat, steal and bare faced lie their way to power, and to remain in power. We know they're going to lie, we say they're going to do it and ask them to give us assurances that they won't - and then they do anyway.

How can anyone stop them doing what they're doing?

I'm becoming increasingly concerned that i (or we) are run at least in part by psychopaths.

Unban choggie, blankfist and dft. (User Poll by MrFisk)

EDD says...

Almost got a heart attack when I saw DFT had been banned (ok, no I didn't), but I'd say all's well if he'll be back in a week and a half.

FWIW, I disagreed with blankfist on most topics he was more vocal about, and found a lot of his videos distasteful, but I still enjoyed his presence, most of the time. That said, I don't think he should be unbanned. I think dag an lucky are and have been doing one hell of a job running and maintaining the site, and these kinds of decisions are better left up to them.

And I have to side with mintbbb on choggie. There is one individual I hope to never see on this site again.

Why Are You Atheists So Angry? - Greta Christina

shinyblurry says...

"In the last few years the atheist movement has moved into overdrive. "We" have become much more visible, much more vocal, much more activist, much better organized and much less apologetic.

And here you have a call to convert people to your way of thinking. It is sounding an awful lot like a religion to me.

And no, I am not defending religion. Jesus hated religion. Christianity is a relationship with God, not attending church and saying grace.

>> ^offsetSammy:
The claim that atheism is a religion shows not only a lack of knowledge (or willful ignorance) about the subject of atheism, but also a lack of knowledge about the English language and roots of words.
By the way, have you considered the irony in the fact that as an attack against atheism, you try to demote it by calling it a religion? Isn't religion the very thing you're trying to defend? Oh, that's right, all religions are actually bogus, EXCEPT YOURS! Now it makes sense.

Tasty batshitidbits by Dick Perry's horde of christian loons

A10anis says...

Please help me.Is this the 21st century or the 7th? As the poster said, were this not so serious it would be laughable. If one of these crazy, uneducated, brainwashed loons is elected as president, then I have little doubt Armageddon will be sooner, rather than later. And people wonder why Atheists are becoming more vocal. God help us all (Pun intended).

If he was doing such a good job what was up with all the parents pushing burgers through the bars of the school. People don't like being changed...we're just a bit more vocal about it.

I'm pretty sure that isn't a universal thing that parents do. The children either eat what they're given in school meals now (they do have choices between main meals) or their parents send them with a packed lunch.

And honestly most of those skanks who were pushing burgers through the school gates are also the ones who's kids are getting free school meals, and I'm sure they prefer saving their money for 20 B&H Sovereign and a bottle of Lambrini a night

"Missing" Gov. Mark Sanford Admits Affair in Argentina

Psychologic says...

>> ^Fjnbk:
Mark Sanford has been an idiot on the fiscal and monetary front, but he's never said that much about moral matters. Yes, he voted for Clinton's impeachment, but it's disingenuous to paint him as a Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell type politician.

He supports teacher-led prayer in schools along with displaying the 10 commandments in school. He defines marriage as "one man, one woman" (and mistress?) and stated that South Carolina should not recognize same-sex civil unions. He also opposes adoption rights for gay couples.

Sure, there are far more vocal (and extreme) people out there on such issues, but that doesn't change Sanford's stated view of the importance of marriage and opposition to allowing homosexuals to take part in it.

He's certainly free to not like homosexuals, but it kinda sucks to see people use political office to promote religious "morality" at the expense of the rights of others. His infidelity doesn't change my view of him, it just makes his stance on marriage even more laughable.

D-Nice - Crumbs On The Table

MrFisk says...

Who gets laid the chicken or the egg?
How about the MC that has just been led
To a renegade teacher preacher then he got stomped
Cause I'm a feature straight from the Bronx
Productions better known as Boogie Down
If I was a king right now I'd get crowned
The Nice is a teacher not a prince or a rap lord
I even write my rhymes on a blackboard
To get specific, and probably make you understand
What makes the 808 plan
It's simple, I'm a round it off like this
That's how many stupid MC's I've dissed
But if the commence to try me I won't buy it
I'll look them up and down and I'll say "Don't even try it"
Cause I can go on and on without breathing
The TR, another form of BDP-eating
MC's like Chunky, moving real bluntly
Shaking and baking MC's like a junky
Fiending, hitting MC's like they was cocaine
Calling them John Doe, meaning they have no name
I'll spin you like a quarter, drink you like water
Hit below the belt with things you never thought of
I lay down the law that I am a slaughter
I roll like a tital wave, so you oughta
Float like a sailboat, move like a speedboat
In water, now watch you soak
Into a rhyme of mine until you hit the bottom
It's heavy like an anchor, it's no problem
For me to just bake you, eat you like a cookie
I am a profressional, boy, you're just a rookie
I'm here to sing a song, but some are not able
Compared to me you're just crumbs on the table

In my prime, more vocal than I've ever been
I'm not an amateur, sort of like a veteran
Split from the bums, arriving from a long trip
Now I'm back to just cold rip
MC's like confetti, eat 'em like spaghetti
I chill for a year and yet I'm still ready
To house MC's, sink 'em like a boat will
I roll heavy, thick like oatmeal
So now you know the 808 is showing
I do damage in just one moment
Here's a little message to those who want to hang out
Just remember that I give pain out
The TR-808 relates to a terrorizer
Never hiding, clever always memorizing
Poetry, history, math, or even paragraphs
I'm not into b-boying, just hoeing
Showing, blowing MC's like the wind does
I might lay you, sort of like a hen does
Cause your rhymes are weak and unstable
Compared to me you're just crumbs on the table

You must think, before you even get soup
I'll put you on the corner and sell you like a prostitute
Like a street whore, make you want more and more
Move you to the side, up and down like a seesaw
Pulling out a gun is uncalled for
But I'm with it, so go for yours
You may even try to diss, but I call it flattery
I pack more volts than a Duracell battery
Charging MC's, smooth like the breeze
Scott made me funky, yo, that was one theme
Or topic, showing I be rocking
Every little city I play I leave a heat wave
Burning up the industry, never try to get with me
I'm the type of person that never needs rehearsing
Just a little sex, a six pack of Beck's
And my room to move about, and a Guiness Stout
To make me feel able, chilling, and stable
Sometimes I'm on the mic, sometimes I'm on the turntable
I'm superb, sort of like herb
A man of my word and I've never been served
