CEO REALLY Stands Behind His Product

solecist says...

AK 47 is a relatively weak rifle to test it with. Compared to a 7.62 NATO which is far more common in the United States it has a maximum 1260 ft-lbf of energy at the muzzle to the NATO 7.62's 2500-3000. And 7.62 NATO is not a heavy load either. A .50 cal BMG (as someone suggested) has 11,000 - 13,000, ten times the 7.62 Russian's energy.

what? i have no idea where you would be using this glass, but i can guarantee you that an AK47 is likely the most powerful HANDHELD firearm you're going to be facing next to an RPG launcher or something. everyone from detroit gangbangers to iraqi insurgents to rebels in the congo have AK47s. the next step up for most of those guys is likely a .50 cal mounted machine gun, and at that point you're boned regardless of your GLASS, because that shit can go through relatively thick STEEL.

Pickup driver tries to kill a motorcyclist

conan says...

Biped robot who balances dynamically using a human-like walk

>> ^oohlalasassoon:

Undeniably cool from a mechanical/robotic engineering standpoint, as is Honda's Asimo, and I applaud the abilities of those able to pull this off, but I can't see past the obvious: this is an unnecessarily-complex and unreliable mode of motion and these humans be ego-trippin about they legs.

It could be useful for carrying heavy loads up stairs and through narrow corridors where wheels or quadrupeds would be less practical. It will be interesting to see what it can do once they get it working on uneven terrain.

On the other hand, if we get brain-computer interfaces working a little better then maybe a future version of these could replace wheelchairs.

Why the other line is likely to move faster

jmd says...

I work at target and would be interested to see how the single line que would be useful combined with the ability to dynamically assign cashiers during times of heavy load. If you have ever worked at target, the number 1 annoying part of the job is getting called for additional cashier help from the floor. We are usually stressed enough in getting our job done before the store closes and dropping what we do to service one or two guest because one persons line was to long is annoying. Also if there is a problem at one cashier (needing supervisor overrides, or WiC check items not going through needing overrides can really stop a line), it is hard to pull the next guest or 2 off the belt and into another line.

One thing I didn't like in the video was the que system line was always full. It really didn't give a good sense that the central que system would be faster. as it took a while for one dot to get from the end to the cashier.

I've spent a bit more time investigating the issue. What it boils down to is our beefy servers are still being brought to their knees from time to time because we're under heavy load. It's mostly for pages with tons of comments because of the time it takes to load all of them. I've made a tweak that will prevent the problem from happening so frequently.

Speaking of posts with too many comments. You need a page next and back for those. Or only show 10 comments per load?

Kickass choir rocks out as old church is moved by truck

rich_magnet says...

Looks like an extended *commercial for John Deere. I assume they sponsored the move. They say the heavy load of the church tower just won't move without tractor power but it looks like the John Deere tractor, when it's in the frame, is just parading in front of the real tractor (I can't see the brand).

Amazing shooting, however.

That why I was saying a button people could click on their own playlist (if they want that playlist upvoted).. and it would queue it in some background cron job that I guess goes through and scrapes a list of videos (and the one username) and then starts the voting thingy. It could just run over a long time doing one person at a time.

In reply to this comment by lucky760:
The thing about massive automated vote casting is it causes heavy load and takes a reeeeally long time. This is not something end users can run because their request will timeout before it finishes.

I plan to do something for playlists as I did for self-votes, but yes it's much, much more complicated so it'll take a lot more time than I have atm. Also not sure we should do it as some people have playlists of videos they downvoted, for example.

In reply to this comment by joedirt:
Can you please add a button to a playlist that let's you auto upvote all videos in the playlist? I guess it's way more complicated then your own videos. Could it add it to some cron queue and get to it eventually?

Random Video (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

@EDD:
Good point about NSFW. I adjusted it so if your filter is on no NSFW vids will be selected. And the whole ratio thing does go against the idea of randomosity (and there's no technical way to do that without adding heavy load).

@NickyBee:
Good idea. Done!

There were also panels, workshops, awards ceremonies, receptions and parties. I did well to see as many movies as I did. If you see a film on the list you recommend, let me know. I’m planning to add to my Blockbuster and Netflix queues. Some of these have not been released yet.

The festival finished Thursday night.

Anyway, I’m tired. % )

Slow speeds again today? 6/14/2008 (Sift Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It was slow for me about an hour ago, but has since sped right up. Not sure what the issue could be. We are not experiencing a heavy load or traffic spike at the moment. Saturdays are usually a chill day.

Happy Siftmas! (Sift Talk Post)
