Movies I've Walked Out of Because they're Really, Really Bad: a List (Blog Entry by dag)

You'll probably like Source Code. It's a tight SF thriller- a bit on the short side - and a little more mainstreamy than Moon - but still good and validates Duncan as someone who can direct a fairly complicated movie and have it make sense to to a general audience without dumbing it down.
I wish someone good would do a reboot of Bladerunner making a version more true to the original book Do Andriods Dream of Electric Sheep which had so much more in it:

I have high hopes for Proyas as well. I think our best bet though, for smart speculative fiction on the screen is Duncan Jones. Director of both Moon and the recent Source Code - his next film is supposedly a homage to Blade Runner set in Berlin - which sounds just awesome.

Nobody ever wants to watch Logan's Run with me - but I love that movie so much.
Oh! Great movie, I downloaded it recently to watch again, but it has to be one of those I watch alone as my wife has only so much ability to watch dated Sci Fi (current sci fi no probs).
Knowing had good bits, but I disliked the resolve. Also had high hopes because it was Alex, and, well, shot in Melbourne Yeay for the museum that me and the kids go to regularly.
Alex has done some stunning work, Dark City and the Crow, some ok work, iRobot was pretty good as long as you didn't actually expect it to be anything to do with Asimov, and some dribble... Garage Days was pretty crap.
I'd love to see him get back on top with an awesome, high concept, visually thrilling film again. Dark City is just so damn awesome.
Oh, but yeah, the plane crash scene in Knowing was awesome, very awesome.
Moon was pretty darn awesome, proper sci fi, dealing with 'concepts' rather than just flying cars and lasers. Source code looks cool, haven't seen it yet. But a 'love letter' to Blade Runner sounds ok by me

I'm not enjoying the trolling on the Sift. (Horrorshow Talk Post)
Holy crap my comment has caused a nice little shitstorm hasn't it?
From my point of view:
* Yes, my second comment (the one that caused the furore) was what I felt when I watched the video, the way the guy was, his demeanour, everything about him just made me think of that type of man. And yeah I have no idea of the backstory of this, and yeah, maybe they all did think it was all in great fun, even her. I just don't think it's that clear cut, I have a feeling she is kinda sad that she let it happen... but again, it's what I FEEL/IMAGINE about the video, it's what I take from it, and I said it in the comment, it reminded me of those types of men. And that type of man doesn't just do it to women, he does it to anyone he thinks he can wield power over. Again, maybe he's not like that... but I have a suspicion he might be. And it was that feeling that the video left with me that made me make the comment and downvote.
* I think all nut hit videos are shithouse, I think Americas/Australias Funniest Home videos is a crapfest of low grade dribble. Yeah, I thought being hit in the nuts was funny up until, I dunno, probably the age of 9 or so, but don't any more. It's fine that other people do of course, but it saddens me that grown people can spend an entire show effectively just watching people hurt themselves... and do so every time it's on TV. And that so many people watch it, but then I feel the same way about UFC, Jackass and any number of things that are hugely popular because people are either beating the shit out of each other or hurting each other in the most extreme ways possible.
* I don't give a flying fuck if you call me boring, straight laced, dull. I know who I am, I know I have an awesome family, job, life. And I know that I don't need to pretend to like violence, sport or sexism just to be popular.
* I like fart jokes
* Those of you who spent SO LONG voicing how important it was that the video was on videosift, and also those who linked to even worse videos, such as the real/fake video of the woman being punched during an argument really need to wonder why you did so. Why is it SO important to you that people see some sort of worth in videos like this? Seriously.
* Gwiz... *sigh* I have gone back and forth thinking you've got real issues with sex and women and that no, you're just misunderstood. But after you posting this video and trying to suggest it has merit, and then promoting the topless one, and the known history of yourself and members here IRL, I'm starting to think your view of women is being seriously affected by a diet entirely too rich in internet porn. Why do you constantly feel the need to bring that shit to the sift? Porn and sexism is EVERYWHERE on the internet, why does it have to be here? Why can this not be a place where women can come without feeling like it's a boy's club? Fuck man, just get your porn fix somewhere else and come here after you've cum...
* Trying to say 'you'd have no issue with the video if it were just men' is avoiding the fact that women are STILL FAR more the victims of male aggression and force and intimidation than the other way around. You can't go on about 'well, women want equality, here it is' bullshit either. Equality doesn't mean everyone should treat everyone like dumb shits, it should be everyone treating everyone with respect.
Look, whatever, people will just continue to say I'm a downer and boring and a killjoy and am trying to impose my beliefs on them, but you know what? There are WAY more places on the net you can indulge your stupid jock, sexist, violent, low brow side, and bugger all where you can come for some pretty interesting discussions about videos. Don't drag the sift to the levels of digg and 4chan and youtube please, it'd really fuck up my day.
Also, it makes me damn sad that you've made women here on the sift feel like this, it really does.
Dog Nurses Goats with Milk Underpants. No Lie.
From the poster on YouTube. I think the dog was okay, @MikesHL13
Actually, Gladys was not trained for her session with the Milk Pants. The idea evolved from the fact that Gladys was completely obsessed with the baby goats, she licked them from the moment they were born, & accompanied us to bottle feed them 3 times a day – never missing a session. She cleaned all the little dribbles of milk as they drank & just adored them, lying super still on the ground while they pounced on her when they were small & running with them as they got bigger & bouncier. cont'd

We joked that she would love to feed them herself, if only there was a way for her to hold the bottles. Practice for the video consisted of a failed attempt with a rigged bottle harness – she was too short & bottle angle was wrong, & what you see in the footage. She was less than a year old, & the words stand/stay were not in her vocabulary. She just stood on the hay & wore the pants while we taped & arranged goats.

Some guy engineers his own 9/11 experiments
^this should be a top rated comment... Incidentally, I am reminded of a famous quote that explains why the government funds the sciences...
"That's why it's always worth having a few philosophers around the place. One minute it's all Is Truth Beauty and Is Beauty Truth, and Does A Falling Tree in the Forest Make A Sound if There's No one There to Hear It, and then just when you think they're going to start dribbling one of 'em says, Incidentally, putting a thirty-foot parabolic reflector on a high place to shoot the rays of the sun at an enemy's ships would be a very interesting demonstration of optical principles." Terry Pratchett.
Now... if you please. I have to go back to my copper box and do some experiments before my wife (el biólogo) wakes up...
How to make almond milk
Oh, my! I love nut milks. Sometimes I get a little carried away and nut milk dribbles down my chin. I'm so clumsy.
Almond and cashew butter is fantastic, as well.
I once made a vegan Boston cream pie using cashew milk for the cream. Turned out well!
Ketchup Bot accurately adds condiments to any fast food
When it slowly turned and dribbled across its own tread...I lol'd a lot.
Also, A+++ for title honesty.
12-year-old basketball player will blow your mind!

Ice Basketball
Now that's some odd place for a game that needs to get you running fast crossover and how do we even dribble? Probably with basketball shooting aids this sport can be possible.
Bill Maher on the Fallacy of 'Balance'
Hm - how to put this...
1. Ol' BM has a point when he says that the "Sanity/Fear" rally might as well have just come out and said it was a liberal counter-protest. Because that's what it was. Stewart can try to pop his clown nose off and on all he wants, but his rally was a bought & paid for liberal event. Old HuffPo bought & paid for the bussing. Unions also bought & paid for attendance. The standard array of leftist ding-dongs were the 'entertainment'. But it was a "non-political" rally? Pht - yeah - right...
2. And of course Bill has it 100% wrong when it comes to which side is the one "talking news" and which side is playing with its own poo. The election proved it. Over 65% of the nation rejected libralism and leftist policies - and Barak Obama's agenda specifically. Bill Maher is NOT firmly camped in middle America with all the normal folks. It is Bill Maher, and all those who agree with his leftist dogma, who are the ones dribbling their lips while they drool in a corner. Bill Maher, Olbermann, MadCow, and all the other leftist media are the freaks and kooks here. There are freaks and kooks on both sides to be sure, but for Bill to act like his positions are 'normal' and only the positions of guys like Beck are 'extreme'? If he really believes that then he's got his head so far up his own butt that he can french kiss his own esophagus.
Fastest Soccer Goalkeeper in History
There is nothing optical or an illusion about this, but your point is sound. Someone who has to do one full sprint in the match is much faster then anyone who is expected to dodge around the field for 90 minutes, even more so for one of the others also dribbling a ball about.
>> ^lucky760:
I think it's mostly an optical illusion because the main point of reference is trying to dribble the ball, not run full speed ahead.
