Bill Maher ~ Why Liberals Don't Like Bachmann & Palin

hpqp jokingly says...

@shinyblurry

Hello my friend, I see the scent of evil godlessness has brought you crusading back with the heavy-handed Truth of the Word! I admire the courageous way you tackle the arguments of three sifters at once, all the while politely avoiding calling @bareboards2, @ChaosEngine and myself by our @tagnames, lest you disturb us to the point that we might be drawn to read your comment and respond.

It is wise of you to remind us that the Bible was written by Christians and not those gnasty gnostics, whoever they may be. The Bible was inspired by God Himself, and only Christians wrote it, including those parts written long before Christianity existed! And don't let the "moderates" talk about compilation, the councils of Nicaea, Rome, Trent, etc. No! God Himself chose which books would be considered canon, not a bunch of pops, popes and romans. And don't let Iranaeus, granddiscipleson of John the Evangelist, tell you that the reason there had to be four gospels - other than for the cool sounding name that is "Tetramorph" - was because

"there are four quarters of the earth in which we live, and four universal winds, while the church is scattered throughout all the world, and the 'pillar and ground' of the church is the gospel and the spirit of life, it is fitting that she should have four pillars breathing out immortality on every side, and vivifying men afresh….Therefore the gospels are in accord with these things…For the living creatures are quadriform and the gospel is quadriform…These things being so, all who destroy the form of the gospel are vain, unlearned, and also audacious; those (I mean) who represent the aspects of the gospel as being either more in number than as aforesaid, or, on the other hand, fewer".

That guy was probably high on burning bush or something.

As for me, I humbly thank you for bringing me back into the realm of honesty about my own life and knowledge. Please continue to spread your God's wisdom and love on the Sift, as you can tell we really need your God's dictatorial stick and carrot (but mostly the stick, i.e. you) to put us on the straight and narrow.

yours sincerely,

...@hpqp

p.s.: You are right about the Bible not being misogynist in the least, but you don't go far enough. Here's an example (among many) that you can use next time, showing that in the Bible females actually get preferential treatment, here at the merciful hands of the author of Genesis (Numbers 31:17-18):

Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.

But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

Okay, you want to take it to the next hyperbolic stage? How about a more appropriate comparison that is on your level?

If I put a gun to your head, and say, "Rape your own children or I'll kill you," then by golly I wonder what you would do.

If you come across me dying of thirst in the desert, and you say "I'll rescue you, as long as you give me your house," I would say "Fuck yeah! Why the fuck did I end up in this stupid desert (Job) to begin with!"

I say those are all bullshit examples you shot back--and that my responses are just as bullshitty. But that aside, this is more a societal problem than an individual problem. Because everyone clings desperately to the meager jobs that corporations dangle in front of us with like carrots...

Forced is a misrepresentation too. Not to focus on the small, but you are not forced to work for Target, so therefore you are not forced to watch this.

If I put a gun to your head, and say "sing me a lullabye, or I'll kill you," I'm not forcing you to do anything, you have a choice.
If I come across you dying of thirst in the desert, and I say "I'll rescue you, as long as you give me your house," I'm not forcing you to do anything, you have a choice.
If I say "watch this video or you're fired", I'm not forcing you to do anything, you have a choice.
I say all of those statements are false, and for the same reason. Coercion is being applied every time. The last one is certainly the least intense form, but it's coercion just the same.
And when unemployment is at its worst in most people's lifetimes, there's not a real big difference between the 2nd and 3rd scenarios, especially for people who were making their living working at Target when times were good.

Bernie Sanders slaps down Rand Paul: Health care as slavery

GenjiKilpatrick says...

[Wow, this sorta tumbled off topic but we'll see where it goes.]

      1.] Slavery bit

Declining profitability & the industrial revolution ended slavery.
Federal regulations were implemented later, mostly as political platforms.

If you're Britain, and the paid-workers of Brazil or Cuba can produce more sugarcane at lower prices compared to slave-workers.. which side of slavery would you support?

If you're an American plantation owner, how much money are you willing to waste rebuilding your business after every, rapidly increasing slave revolt?

If you're an American or European Labor Union supporter, are you going to buy sugar or textiles from companies that don't pay their workers?

[No, you might even start a petition to enact legislation.]

      2.] Regulation ≠ Improvement

You and @peggedbea seem to think I'm implying that oligarchs should be allowed off some magical leash called regulation.

What I should have articulated first, was the understanding that:
Regulation & incentive - sticks & carrots - work counter-intuitively, more often than not.

Think about it. Is it the people typing up the regulations or the management?
Is it the workers writing up the wage laws or the owners?

If you're a small business owner who you can't afford to pay your workers minimum wage, you're out of the game before you can even start.

Regulations are the Oligarchs best tool to maintain or expand their power.

Mostly because folks like you & Bea legitimize their authority thru your support of regulation as the best thing since sliced bread.

      Lastly

While I support truly free economic exchange, I also support single payer universal health care.

It's possible for them both to exist together at once.

The sooner more people are allowed into the market..
the sooner capitalist fundamentalist healthcare oligarchs will be overlooked because someone offers a better service.

[Again, are you gonna buy from the small, local owner whose minimum wage is slightly below your standards.

..Or the giant multinational conglomerate who uses Southeast Asian slave labor.]

These things tend to work themselves out.

Attempting to elicit obedience from the oligarch only causes problem for all of us you aren't powerful enough to game the system like they can.

Hence, why free economic exchange - yes even the darker side - is necessary for true liberty.

The new Olympic sport: Cunt Punching!

dannym3141 says...

@carrot - well said.

All this speculation about there being some twisted powerplay going on. First off, you have no idea about any of that. I've seen more incriminating conversations between jackass members but for some reason no one's ever jumped up and opined about there being an abusive homosexual relationship. Second off - some people enjoy that, and i think people who complain about this should be very concerned that they're not being fetish-phobic or whatever the hell the word is, or fun-phobic, or equality-phobic. Just because she's a girl you think she needs saving!

Tellin' you man, it's the new homophobic. Let people do what they enjoy doin'.
