Saving A Wild Echidna

Hef says...

This is like the idiots who will "save" a sloth from swimming across a river or lake despite the fact that they were doing just fine.

Echidnas are actually very good swimmers and use their long noses like snorkels, sometimes they'll just hop in the water for a bit of fun.
What if the little echidna's burrow was on the other side?

New Rule: First Lady Barack Obama | Real Time (HBO)

newtboy says...

You are one of that (lowball) 5%.
Trump is one of those 5%ers.

Almost all republicans think Biden’s performance is head and shoulders above what they claimed they expected.
You said the economy would crash.
You said unemployment would explode.
You said China and Russia would overpower us and take over.
You said he would fold for Putin and Xi.
Not one of those things have happened….not in the real world, maybe in Republican delusions.

I ask you, do you think your predictions are better or worse than reality? (We know the truth, don’t bother lying).

Biden has undoubtedly done better than any Republican predicted, way better. That you all still answer that he’s doing worse only shows there are no honest Republicans. You set a low bar….so low he could crawl like a reptile and be above it, but he’s walking upright and capable of jumping, unlike the previous president who needs help on stairs, ramps, inclines, etc and burrowed deep under that same bar.

I think he’s doing about as well as can be expected considering the fractured, divided, crumbling, sick, eroding country the last president left him, better in some areas, worse in some. Since his only expectation by most was “beat Trump”, it’s utterly ridiculous to pretend he’s not already 100% successful. 😉

Guy Builds Veggie Garden For Family Of Groundhogs

newtboy says...

Not just his gardens....they’re burrowing under his house. I think his tune is going to change when his foundation starts sinking unevenly and his house falls apart.

Holy crap I cannot believe how stupid this is. First, he's feeding wildlife... don't fucking feed the wildlife. Second, in 5 years that colony is going to grow and grow... tunnels will be excavated and his cute "gardens" will be decimated. Three, Gophers are know to contract an carry rabies... I have had to kill numerous rabid gopher in my youth. While it makes for a cute little video this guy is an idiot.

Millennials in the Workforce, A Generation of Weakness

newtboy says...

Certainly we can't all be eagles, but those who've resigned themselves to being weasels should recognize their station and act accordingly, not pretend they fearlessly soar the skies of death deserving rewards and accolades from the comfort their burrow.
I get where you're coming from, but I disagree it's one or the other. Checking out and half assing it because success didn't come fast enough only ensures it will never arrive. Working hard and smart striving for greatness is the best way to achieve it, but of course it's still no guarantee.
And yes, the "system" could certainly use improvements too, but an individual can have far more positive impact on their own lives by working to improve themselves than they can on the system working to improve it. It's best to work on both whenever possible.

I like / agree with your take on each of the 4 issues, but 4 really is easier said than done.

Having skills and making yourself invaluable happens quite slowly over time, and only if the arbiter correctly recognizes that value. I think capitalism has such a stranglehold on modern life that minor variations in short term profit/loss potential get overvalued while major intangible things (or at least, less tangible in quarterly reports) get ignored.

And just in general, everybody needs a job or purpose, but we can't ALL stand out and be invaluable. Eagles may soar to great heights, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. Sometimes steady adequacy is, well, adequate.

Thinking that the world owes us happiness is a character flaw, but "checking out" by half-assing or phoning it in is a fairly rational response to a system that doesn't give a fuck about us as individuals, even those that DO go the extra mile. Fix the system (to the extent that it can be), and better results would follow.

Antifa Violence Finally Called Out by Media

Asmo says...

Yay, at least you bothered to watch the video.

And yes, No Bullshit's channel is loaded with a lot of biased opinions as he leans significantly to the right. But you'd be hard pressed to argue that, despite this particular video not making the mainstream air, that the coverage has shown the depths both sides have plunged to. Australian coverage has been downright blinkered at this point, there is no violence on the left at all and it's all nazi's killing folks... /eyeroll

So instead, you could look at channels like Sargon's, who, despite being constantly labelled as an alt right dickhead, is generally slightly left of center but who calls out violence where/when ever it happens.

I've seen a lot of shit in burrowing in to this, from a lot of sources on both sides (and people who try to be objective). Objectively, if you show up in black masks with pre-bagged shit, urine, fireworks and glass bottles, weighted sap gloves, bike locks and pepper spray combined with a clear message that it's okay to attack "nazi's" who's crime is expressing their admittedly vile ideology, you're not a good person.

Red shirts vs brown shirts, Wiemar Germany pre-WWII anyone?

You can try to make this about me ('ermagerd, you caused me to downvotes the video'), but you've admitted you didn't even watch the vid. At least I gave it a fair hearing, and while I do certainly admit the videos maker has an agenda, it is still documenting what is going on out there. Turn off the fucking voice track if you're too much of a snowflake to hear commentary you don't agree with, but the footage is damning...

As for Bob, I've been fairly unequivocal in the past about his line of deeply partisan BS and the veiled racism he espouses. As per the Ruins Everything sift up (https://videosift.com/video/Why-Proving-Someone-Wrong-Often-Backfires) atm about arguing and how it generally reinforces opinions, do you think that you two haranguing each other constantly (or even you and I) is going to accomplish anything other than entrenching the other side? \= |

newtboy said:

Ok, you got me to watch...up until he said "this time it's been a lot harder for the media to defend the far left and antifa without any fake nazis". There's so much bias in this it's lost any meaning or point it might have had. Your prodding earned it my downvote.
Happy?

EDIT: Also, his third sentence is a pure lie, the patriot prayer protest was officially canceled, no longer permitted, and those that showed up anyway were only there to attack the lefties, which they did wearing armor and swinging clubs as they rushed into the crowd, they were NEVER peaceful, they were intentionally provocative and violent so they could show us all how violent and out of control the left is with their response, and so they could get a few good licks in on some libtards. It didn't work out like they hoped, though, some of those snowflakes hit hard.

Dog Saved After 3 Days In A Wombat Hole

charliem says...

Wombat burrows are no fucking joke. If you ever find yourself curious, do not go in one. If the wombat is out of its burrow and comes back to find you in there, it will stand up in the hole and press its back to the roof, trapping you in.

You suffocate and die a very slow death.

Do not enter them.

Molyneax on Bundy Ranch Standown of BLM

newtboy says...

There has been no assult on the rancher's property, it's all on Federal land.
This may be an example of why dumb americans want guns, but this is also an example of many people that SHOULDN'T be allowed to have guns. If you want a rifle to take on the federal government, you are an idiot. The feds have tanks and missiles, who wins EVERY TIME in that fight? Just ask (edit, I meant Koresh and the Waco people). His suggestions amount to telling children to go play in the freeway because it belongs to them as public land, and the fed has no right to reserve it for cars. I wish this guy walked his own talk and was standing right there in the front baiting the feds, he might be the first casualty.

This is not about 'defending freedom', it's about defending a criminal that believes federal land is his to use and damage as he sees fit, even after being told clearly and repeatedly that he has to pay for it, (which he refused to) and can only use it for certain purposes for a certain time period (which have ended long ago).

His example of allowed use, the solar company, is forced to follow environmental laws and not damage the land/environment, cattle don't follow laws and do damage the land badly. Solar and wind don't hurt turtles, cattle and vehicles (used to manage the cattle) do. Proven.
EDIT: I recall many 'ranchers' on federal land intentionally killing turtles because they burrow, making holes that cattle get hurt in.

I agree with Yogi, this guy is massively deluded and is attempting to spread his stupidity...suggesting that non-citizens take on the fed in this kind of action? WHAT?!? Also claiming that the fed managing it's land is 'facist'. Just DUH, dude. I might downvote this video for mis-information, lack of understanding, and just plain ridiculous ideas if I could.
I note this blowhard isn't standing with the rancher armed...maybe he doesn't WANT to be shot?

Octopus Plays With Coconut

grinter says...

Thanks for the article. It kinda reads like an add for Jennifer Mathers' 'octopuses are smart' book. Her 2008 Consciousness and Cognition paper does a better job at laying out the most cephalopod behaviors impressive behaviors:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1053810006001504
. Don't get me wrong; I think cephaolopods totally awesome, but I don't see the case for them being cognitive leaps and bounds above other invertebrates. The behaviors that they are capable of are found elsewhere among inverts, yet people (often encouraged by Mathers or her coauthors on that book) seem to imply they are basically eight armed dogs of the sea:

Behavioral conditioning in the lab (which Mathers likes to call "learning") - Bees, butterflies
Moving objects to close off burrows - mantis shrimp
Carrying objects as temporary refuges - crabs
Individual recognition - wasps, lobsters?, mantis shrimp.
Complex spatial navigation - ants, bees.
Learning via observation - I'm not aware of other inverts that do this, but the cephalopod evidence is also pretty weak.

Maybe there are some more recent, and more convincing results?
