George Takei calls out Anti-gay Douchebags.

quantumushroom says...

In October 2005, Takei revealed in an issue of Frontiers magazine that he is gay, and has been in a committed relationship with his partner, Brad Altman, for the last twenty-one years. He said 'It's not really coming out, which suggests opening a door and stepping through. It's more like a long, long walk through what began as a narrow corridor that starts to widen.'

Is Sulu being serious here or tongue-in-cheek?

Guy who snitched on Warlogs leaker gets trashed by hackers

The stuff I've read seems to implicate this guy as an attention seeker. That doesn't exonerate Brad Manning. Also, as slinky and weasel-like as this guy seems, the mob doesn't strike me as morally superior in this case.

TYT: Anne Rice Leaves Christianity

1) I didn't "brag" about being ignorant, I simply insinuated that not everybody has heard of her - including myself and what I'd assume to be the vast majority of people on this very continent - the same majority who have never heard of Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky either.

2) I do know about a particular movie called "Interview with a Vampire" and until earlier today, I didn't have the slightest clue - nor interest - as to who wrote the story it's based on. The same applies to hundreds of other movies, while we're at it.

3) I have no opinion of her, since I don't care about her. The purpose of my ocmment was to mention the odd impression one might get while reading the summary of the respective WP article - since she was born "Howard Allen" and is an "author of gothic, erotic, and religious-themed books". That is no reflection on her, but on the information revealed about her by the author of said article.>> ^mizila:

What a useful and constructive post, I like the part where you brag about being ignorant. Yes, most people recognize the name Anne Rice because she wrote a few vampire books including one called Interview with a Vampire... a book which was made into a movie starring a couple of little known thespians from a little town called Hollywood named Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. So yeah, most people over 20 have heard of Anne Rice.
Sorry, I'm not a fan of hers either, but what a stupid comment. "Oh somebody I've never heard of, why don't I look them up on wiki, scan the page for a couple seconds and tell everyone what opinions I've formed!!"

Everybody knows Anne Rice is a best-selling novelist? I hadn't heard that name until about 3 minutes ago.
A quick visit at WP gave me the impression of a transvestite and religious nutjob writing vampire porn.

Comic-con Surprise: Joss Whedon’s favorite actor

Deano says...

I remember growing up and films JUST CAME OUT. And you went to see them and bought some tie-in products. These guys are spoiling things for themselves with that need to know all. Also the article does suggest that the geek opinion-makers are bought and paid for and co-opted into each film's marketing efforts. Which is totally unsurprising to me. You give something to someone and it creates an obligation - classic psychology.

I do applaud the geek but they need to reign in that enthusiasm and directors shouldn't kowtow to Comic Con just because they've got a superhero film coming out.

Actually the clip above is quite fun. It's pure pantomime and if you know the people involved I'm sure it's enormous fun.

Entertainment / Celebrity Goss based on mainstream cinema is a global billion dollar industry. Morons of the world are desperate to find out the latest on Tom and Katie / Brad and Angelina. It's completely acceptable to fawn over actors who are overpaid 'buy the numbers' with pretty mediocre talent.
Being a geek or nerd used to be an insult and something to be mocked and bullied for. Now geeks run your IT, and your Internets, fix your computers, and make the App's and games for your iPhones.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

This poll is admittedly borderline - but we have a he'll of a lot of Daily Show videos on here - so I thought it would pass.

In a related whinge- must we always run the precedence test against anything posted? My kids are always ferreting out potentially impartial or unjust parental decisions. Maybe it's human nature.

Very good point Tymberwulf. Awhile back I tried to start a poll about who the most influential person in world history was, and @dag removed it because it didn't fit guidelines or something.>> ^Tymbrwulf:
Ah, so the poll can also be used for useless sensationalist polls? Duly noted.
Next week's poll.
"Do you think Lindsey Lohan should go to jail?"
Followed by
"Is Brad and Angelina's relationship going to last? Have we seen the last of Jennifer?"
