FOX News Host Not Happy With GI Joe Movie's Internationalism

thepinky says...

SpaceOddity, you're not alone.

This is absurd. When he refers to Hollywood divorcing Americanness from the military, he's not talking about all militaries, Skeeve. He's talking about the U.S. military, and he's right. G.I. Joe cartoons capitalized on the awesomeness of the U.S. military. My memories of the show are a jumble of corny lines, explosions, big weapons, and cool military technology. What he's saying is that G.I. Joe got popular among little American boys because it was about how awesome OUR military is, and this movie takes that popularity and exploits it, removing the patriotic U.S. military core of the entire franchise. Cobra was a terrorist organization bent on world domination. Can you imagine these filmmakers producing a movie about American heroes fighting terrorists? No, no, no, we can't have that.

I'm rambling again. What I want to say is that it's absolutely preposterous to make G.I. Joe some kind of international organization. They wanted to use the G.I. Joe name for its dollar value, but then they decided to get all apologetic about the Americanness of it. (Hm...apologizing for America. Of whom am I reminded?) In case you've forgotten, these characters were American men and women of diverse ethnicities who gave good advice to kids.

P.S. Your narrow-minded "America sucks" attitude is incredibly immature, ignorant, and trendy.

My responses below:

a) You actually do see the # of comments still; it's just over on the right side now.

b) Hmm. All videos should have thumbnails, even if it's just the logo of the video host or a sifter icon. Can you give me a link to a video that doesn't have any image at all? If such a thing exists (other than the few seconds after submission that it takes for the thumbnail to get generated) something might need to be fixed, but it really shouldn't be happening.

Ah, great! Thank you!

Two minor points that I think are valid:
a) You don't see the number of comments in the overview anymore (and there are a lot of videos where I just read the comments and don't watch the video, so this number is of interest)
b) Videos without thumbnails can't be run inline in the page listing, because there's nothing to click on.

As much as I hate to be a party pooper, I'm going to dissent and say that I'm not as much in awe about the new UI as the rest of the sifters. Not very intuitive, but very busy. Things sliding in and out, shifting the contents up and down, icons appearing and disappearing... it's like someone discovered scriptaculous and just went crazy with the effects.

I appreciate that whoever did this did it with the best intention, and a lot of work went into this, but being slidey and cool doesn't trump usability. (It does gyre and gimble in the wabe. And mimsy were the borogoves...)

My big wish for 4.1: Add an optional "static" layout, minimizing javascript effects.

And please move the "login" link out of the "New user?" menu. I was looking for over two minutes for that darn login link.

So can we ban his racist ass now? (Wtf Talk Post)

^You should just walkaway and cool off, you are just digging the hole deeper. You have clearly lost all ability of reading comprehension.

I'm saying that "a majority of people calling someone a racist - i.e. via negative votes" doesn't make him racist because a democracy or consensus doesn't prove shit. The exact OPPOSITE point you are trying to suggest I am making. What proved he wasn't a racist was his previous comments, and the obvious context of satire, not the majority people voting NO in the poll.

No wonder you think westy is racist you misunderstand what anyone says in the exact OPPOSITE way.

Removed from parody channel.

Parody - A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule.

This is an official Microsoft ad designed to make people see the benefits of the InPrivate browsing feature in Internet Explorer 8. It is NOT a parody, it is simply Microsoft attempting to be hip and cool with a viral ad that would never see TV time.

Rep. John Shimkus: God decides when the "earth will end"

quantumushroom says...

Right-wing prejudice against greenies? Get real. A full THIRD of all federal regulations are environmental regs. We're not talking about a few recycling bins here but the systematic destruction of the free market, which has protected resources through private property ownership way better than some bureaucrat deciding you can't cut down a tree on your own property.

When green fanatics announce that "all GW debate is over", compare their opponents to "Holocaust deniers" and rush to pass still more wealth and freedom-destroying legislation before it can be debated, what else can "man-made" GW be but a hoax?...a hoax perpetrated by government force. TIME IS RUNNING OUT is the mantra of the used car salesman.

It's embarrassing that so many otherwise 'rational' people would suddenly link millions of years of natural global warming and cooling cycles to a few centuries of industry, as if THE SUN plays no role in earth not being a ball of ice. (measuring by the cycles we're LONG overdue for another ice age).

Now greenvangelicals are trying to declare water vapor and carbon dioxide TOXIC and in need of regulation. There's no end to these power grabs and no limits to the human lust for power and other emotional defects from which the atheist naively declares immunity.

"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."

The Antiscience Campaign of the GOP Continues

NetRunner says...

I also like the bit where he mentions "something called magnetic levitation" as if it's ridiculous, and not super-high tech and cool.

Oh, and the new cars he mentions in this clip? They're hybrids, or I suppose I should say "something called a 'high-bridge'".

Christian Bale goes...um...Batshit (Wtf Talk Post)

"The DP on TERMINATOR SALVATION, Shane Hurlbut, is a apparently a light tweaker. He's a fairly young DP and likes to fiddle with his lights on set during action, which is a big "NO NO" on most productions unless worked out in advance with performers. But apparently Shane was a pretty unrepentant light tweaker.

The scene in question, was a very emotional and tough scene between Christian Bale and Bryce Howard. A scene that required soul bearing and a deep level of immersive concentration. The sort of scene where everyone on set knows not to get in anyone's eye lines, and definitely not to move lights around while FILMING. You lock that shit down before the scene starts.

Bale had indeed warned the DP on multiple occasions about messing with lights while the cameras were rolling, and Bale was in the midst of a painful scene with Bryce, what was described to me as being the emotional center of the film and his character for the film.

Now, the reason I know all of this is because the person that was there, felt that it should be made perfectly clear that Christian Bale was the utmost gentleman and cool guy on set. And the DP really was doing something that professional DPs with experience just don't do. Not during a performance. "

So it seems he was tweaking(?) the lights, not walking through the scene.

Chair gets stuck in an MRI machine

cybrbeast says...

Well charliem, those MRIs are cooled with liquid helium which is quite expensive and it would take some time to warm up and cool down again. this will probably have to be done slowly to prevent fracture.
