David Hahn: Nuclear Boy Scout

artician says...

And here's more info on him. It sounds like he's a really bright individual who society completely failed to position for success.

After dropping out of community college, Hahn joined the Navy, assigned to the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise as an undesignated seaman.

Hahn had hoped to pursue a nuclear specialist career. EPA scientists believe that Hahn may have exceeded the lifetime dosage for thorium exposure, but he refused their recommendation that he be examined at the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station.

And then a sad bit:
On August 1, 2007, Hahn was arrested in Clinton Township, Michigan for larceny, in relation to a matter involving several smoke detectors, allegedly removed from the halls of his apartment building. His intention was to obtain americium, a radioactive substance, from the detectors. In his mug shot, his face is covered with sores which investigators claim are possibly from exposure to radioactive materials

Finally: fer christ's sake, son! what the hell happened to you!

Navy first: Same-sex couple share first homecoming kiss

quantumushroom says...

David Bauer, the commanding officer of the USS Oak Hill, said that Gaeta and Snell's kiss would largely be a non-event and the crew's reaction upon learning who was selected to have the first kiss was positive.

"It's going to happen and the crew's going to enjoy it. We're going to move on and it won't overshadow the great things that this crew has accomplished over the past three months," Bauer said.

You are owed nothing, but do learn the difference between propaganda and news. Do you really think the military, with its liberally-accused censoring of coffin photos and use of embedded reporters, just happened to have two attractive symbols around? It's not the ladies' fault, I'm sure they weren't in on it.

I like the captain's barely-veiled threat and the suspicious attractiveness of the, ah, participants. Don't expect to see two dudes kissing until after His Earness steals the election this coming year.

Record deficit? Un-payable National Debt? 10's of millions of citizens that can't afford or don't have health insurance? Rampant greed on Wall St? A burgeoning underclass? A natural environment on the way to shitsville?

Yes, folks! Your Tax Dollars at Work! Be proud of the USS Independence! Celebrate the bonuses paid to General Dynamics Executives!

Does the water jets it is using make any difference to the wake?

Yes it does, but as it's the only economical (by defense standards anyway) way to get that hulk up to those speeds, the foam of the wake really doesn't factor in. The impressive part is the bow waves though, or lack thereof. The pontoons (I don't believe they have engines, otherwise they'd be nacelles) seem to catch the bow waves, possibly re-using the force to retrieve some lost kinetic energy. That last part might be coming out of my ass though.

You know, getting back to the video, it has remarkably small bow waves for such a large ship. The wake is a churning mess that goes on for miles, but it looks like it could pass a 18ft sailboat at flank speed without causing much harm.

Wikipedia says it can reach 47 knots (87 km/h; 54 mph). I don't know much about ships but I know that's fast for a 115 m long ship. Does the water jets it is using make any difference to the wake?
