The organ sycles though instruments based on a preset program, it can allso have 2 things be played from 1 key press , or play an apageated sequence of notes when you hold keys down, by using all these functions together it is possible to do things that would normally require 4 hands and 4 legs

Incredible One Woman Orchestra - Qi Zhang

seems like it is just automating through preset samples - I fail to see how this is unique from any talented keyboardist performance, tbh. I wouldn't really call it a one person orchesta... Or maybe I'm missing something.

So what makes a Pianist great? At the end they're all just playing the same notes from memory, over and over again, aren't they?

This woman took a pretty unique instrument and programmed it herself to create every aspect of this performance. The timing, the precision and the sheer amount of practice it must have taken to get this perfectly right are pretty incredible.

What makes this a one-person orchestra? Try taking an audio recording of this performance, play it to someone who hasn't heard it before and then ask them how many people are playing. One won't be an answer anyone not familiar with this would give.

Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis (Science Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

Imstellar,

You have such a selective perception about economics and economic theory. I bet you hold this whole Mises book dear to heart because it basically reinforces your preset beliefs.

Contrary to what you believe Mises thoughts towards socialism have been rebuked and disproven by the Socialist economies of Europe that mix capitalistic incentives with large government spending. Not to mention the large economic boom Communist China has experienced in the last 15 years.

The debate comes down to running against the Misean ideal of liberty in society, which he goes to analyze very well in a model socialist economy but never explains how you apply liberty as an ideal in a capitalistic system. Liberity has been shown to take a secondary position in many actions of capitalistic agents.

You talk about welfare of citizens in a pure liberty based, free market system, well such a system would have no moral qualms then by eliminating its work force and moving to China, or taking in illegal workers from Mexico because you know paying Americans with their socialistic health care, welfare and employment benefits runs contrary to free market ideology.

Essentially every time you argue for these Misean systems you are arguing for a particular system that 90% of the world disagrees with, the world isn't about efficiency and free market capitalization, its about welfare systems, its about government systems that sometimes care for their citizens over economic efficiency. The same socialist states you claim are failures also happen to have consistent steady growth, high levels of education, unemployment benefits, liberal governments, and nationalized health care system.

Contrast that with a capitalistic society like America. Which one would be more favorable to live in for an individual.

Steven Weinberg on the Meaning of Life

Psychologic says...

>> ^nickreal03:
his guy really doesn't understand anything. The meaning of like is so obvious that it hurts. Fallow steps:
1. Find best mate you can. Marry it.
2. Have children.
3. Educate your children the best you can.
4. Help society by keeping yourself useful.
5. The more you know the most useful you can be.
6. Make people in higher positions than yourself accountable.
7. Demand everyone to get better all the time.
8. Make the world a sustainable one.
9. Think how the human as well as other spices can survive in the worse of events.
10. Execute some of those plans.
The rest is just details. Sorry this list could be compress to a single sentence but I let that to the reader.

While those are positive endeavors, none of them really give insight into the meaning or purpose of life (except possibly having children I guess). Those are more along the lines of self-fulfillment.

Many people feel like they have no direction or ultimate goal in life other than to survive and possibly be "successful", but that's just how life is. Other then a religious view of life, there really isn't a preset direction that a person or all of humanity is designed to take. That idea bothers a lot of people, which is why the search for the "meaning" of life is very important to many, whether it exists or not.

Personally though, the one thing I do foresee the human race creating that will change everything is Artificial Intelligence that completely surpasses the abilities of even the most brilliant human. That is the closest thing I can think of to a "purpose" of life, if you would really call it that.

If you're curious, the AI thing should happen between 2030 and 2050, though some estimates have it occurring even earlier.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

Wow, you sure hit on a popular topic pinky... posted a day ago, and 98 replies.

My problem with your post?

You list a collection of EASILY shot down, ridiculous arguments as if they are things that those of us that are ok with porn believe in. Which makes it really easy to defend your position because you've preset the bar really low on your opponent's side.

I have stated my views on porn on this site a number of times, but they go something like this:

* Pornography, something made to sexually arouse someone is not in any way inherently wrong, how can you suggest that making someone turned on is a bad thing?

* There is a LOT of sleaze and sadness in the porn world. This is my fundamental issue with porn. In a perfect world, all the people involved in the production of porn would be enjoying themselves, would be treated with utmost respect and be unashamed of what they do. In the real world the majority of people involved in it do so because they need the money and couldn't be bothered/haven't had the opportunity to get a 'real' job that pays as well. This really affects my enjoyment of porn because I keep being snapped out of the fantasy when I think of how much the actress (and sometimes the man) is not enjoying herself. There ARE movies which show REAL couples enjoying themselves together in front of a camera with someone they really care for/love, and do so because it turns them on, and these are sensational (well, the idea is, the only one I watched was not great). But the sad truth is that most porn out there features people that would rather be doing something else.

* There is a disturbing trend towards humiliation in porn that I've seen these days. The treatment of women as mere objects to fuck, and to do so in the most savage way possible really, really disturbs me and makes me feel concerned for the general mindset of men at the moment towards women.

* But that doesn't mean that I rule out porn entirely, I enjoy porn, I enjoy adult entertainment, I enjoy it with my wife on occasion and it makes for a fun and erotic time. BUT you have to hunt down the porn that is pro women in the way things happen on screen (women are pleasured, treated well, with respect), shows respect and basically just leads to a great feeling of heightened eroticism. It can help to have a couple explore their fantasies and communicate things they'd like to try. But throw in a bit of humiliation or mistreatment and it can ruin it for everyone as we don't want to see that kind of crap.

Pornography in and of itself is not bad, there is plenty of bad pornography out there, but there's also plenty of good porn too. So I do condemn a lot of porn I've seen snippets of, and lament that there isn't a higher percentage of the type of porn that shows people treating each other with respect in a sexual way. If there was more of that I think the entire industry could be better for it, rather than heading down the track of 'the dirtier, the filthier the better', as that's a path to complete self destruction and they'll just find their position so hard to defend as almost no decent person can defend something which denigrates others so much.

So... there, you got another huge response from me... dang you!

Potential *TimeLapse Channel Up for Bids (Sift Talk Post)

10444 says...

The idea is cool but I wouldn't see it as being practical since there are so many channels already. I really like the idea of the preset tags myself, it would make things much tidier ( if done the right way that is)! Too much organization = not fun

Potential *TimeLapse Channel Up for Bids (Sift Talk Post)

MINK says...

wow. a whole channel just for timelapse.
is it too hard to just tag them all with "timelapse"?

what's your limit on how many channels is practical to have? didn't we reach that limit already?

how about getting rid of 10 channels instead of adding a new one?

or, how about having ONLY ten channels, and adding some "preset tags" to the submission form... like the uber MUSIC channel could have the tags "live","jazz","rocknroll" etc. and you just have to tick-to-tag

Global Warming? Coulda fooled me. (Blog Entry by MarineGunrock)

joedirt says...

Are you serious?! Hello? You're a smart guy. Look at it this way, on average across a whole year, there is an average temperature. It doesn't vary by much and even in global warming scenarios, it is a few degrees.

So, even not talking about actual year-year warming. Let's assume the average global yearly temp is constant.

So, on average when you start having hotter and hotter weather (from sun output or CO2 etc) guess what? It means even colder extremes as well. Once you start pulling one part of the system to extremes, the whole thing becomes more extreme. More wind, more hurricanes, more rain, longer periods of no rain. The hotter the summers are average across summer months means you have to make up for that in the winter. (On average).

It's like playing slot machines over a very long time. Hot streaks on average will lead to long cold streaks. (Of course in this example slot machines are not truely random, but rather have a preset payout scale and actually manipulate winning percentages to come out with average payouts of 95% or whatever.
