Sarah Palin wins "Lie of the Year"

lol what a mupit
, how can you claim that preventative care would cost more mony? i mean what the fuck research is that bassed on.
im fairly confident that if u prevented cancer detected it early in just 10% more than what u get now from that alone you would reecoperate all costs.
although having sead that i guess now people just have it and die as they cannot afford insurance or basic helth care in usa.

The reason why preventative care for cancer can cost more is exactly because it prevents people from dying young. This is why smokers on average cost our system less than non-smokers. Many of them develop lung cancer before they're retired, and die of it quickly. They pay into the system while they're young and healthy, and skip over the last few decades of life when they would need the most care.

Of course, I'm not using any of that as an argument against preventative cancer screenings or anti-smoking campaigns. We just have to remember that the point of health-care is to improve and save our lives, saving money is secondary.

Dublin's People - Canon 7D (HD + fullscreen)

Seric says...

Vimeo: Filmed at the end of the 2 day F-Stop Academy Cinematography workshop in Dublin when we were in wind down mode. Shot on a pre-production Canon 7d.

I took the Canon 7d, Zacuto Tactical rig, Z-Finder V2 and one lone lens, a Canon 35mm f1.4, which becomes more like a 50mm lens on the 7d. So a bit like what I did with Sofia's People (but I didn't have the Zacuto rig for that).

I shot 1/50th of a second as I was shooting 24p and to match the 50hz frequency of the artificial all around me in Temple Bar.

I also shot some stuff 720p 50p with shutter at 1/100th to get the slow motion shots of the juggler which were conformed to 23.98p in Cinema tools to create the beautiful slow motion.

Sound on the last bit was just the internal mono cam mic as I didn't want a big mic on top of the camera.

Big thanks To Darragh and Emma for organizing the workshop. To all the people attended and especially the people who came to the intensive 1 day Cinematography practical workshop on Sunday. Jala (from Germany), Cathal (from N. Ireland) and Jean-Jacques (from France) stayed on another night and joined me for the night shooting. We had a great time. You may also spot my partner in crime Den Lennie a couple of times here.

Music is appropriately by the great THIN LIZZY and is of course Whiskey In The Jar.

Minor colour balance grading was done. That's all to take out the yellow of the sodium lights.

Smoking may look cool on camera kids but it's bad for you! The reason so many smokers in this? All the smokers are outside, all the non smokers are inside due to smoking ban. I hope you notice the one in my mouth was not lit! :-)

Lewis Black Destroys GOP Talking Points on Health Care

quantumushroom says...

Health "crises" are just another way the fascists are trying to subjugate freedom.

Much like how the freest people on earth are now blamed for the weather and being dictated to how to use energy and what to drive, once this evil government get its filthy paws on the health care system you'll see the banning of tobacco and fast food overnight.

The rationing of health care might be based not on availability but on compliance with fascist health laws (e.g. the non-smoker gets heart surgery before the fat guy and the smoker). It's easy to picture these vermin banning guns as a 'health issue', and using the mental health system to lock up dissidents, just like they do in Red China.

Government is the problem. It is a necessary evil, and ultimately when you strip all the bullshit away behind every law is a man with a gun pointed at you. Government is force, not reason, not charity, not wisdom. Government creates nothing, it can only destroy, through the power of taxation.

Smokers: Will the E-Cigarette Work For You?

handmethekeysyou says...

If you want to quit, I can't agree more with btanner. "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" is an amazing book. The reason? It sounds dumb, but it's 250 pages of Allen Carr writing positively about stopping smoking. You may think that's ludicrous, but if you think about it, you never really hear people talk positively about quitting. They talk about how bad smoking is for you. They talk about how you shouldn't do it. They talk about how hard it is to quit. They talk about everything negatively. This stresses smokers out. You know what smokers do when we get stressed? That's right, we smoke.

Do you ever see ad campaigns aimed at getting you to stop smoking? Do they make you feel like it's something positive that you can accomplish? No. They make it seem like a daunting task, or they show you horrible pictures of what you're doing to your lungs. None of this works. If you want to quit, I highly, highly, highly recommend "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking." Heck, even if you don't want to quit I recommend it because you'll want to by the time you're done reading it. You can quit. It's not difficult, and it will make you a happier person.

I tried quitting in college. I made it 24 hours and I was confined to my bed for a large part of that, pulling my hair out. After reading the book I have stopped smoking for numerous months on multiple occasions. For this reason, I recommend (as does Carr) that you do not lend out your copy of the book. I would still be a nonsmoker if I reread the book when I started to falter. But I'm prone to mood swings and getting self-destructive. I just can't say enough about the book. Actually, this has encouraged me to read it again. And the next time I do, I'm going to keep it on the coffee table instead of putting it back on the bookshelf.

Great Advice to Quit Smoking (BBC Horizon)

This is pretty much exactly like religion vs. atheism, with religion being of course smoking.

Anti-smoking is by far the more religious. Smoking is blamed for a host of sundry afflictions with scientific support that no one has the courage to challenge. People want it to be evil and that's what they get. No serious scientist would do any unbiased research, because if he found anything remotely pro-smoking the political fallout would ruin his career overnight.
Our surgeon general states that 70% of lung cancer victims got it from smoking, but lung cancer continues to rise with nary a blip - even though smokers per capita have fallen under 25% and have been there for a decade. If you want me to support this claim with data, sorry I can't. Neither the CDC or the ALA, or any other site I could find, will release any data cross referencing lung cancer victims and smokers. You can easily find how much carcinogens a black single mother of 2 will inhale in a 12x12 room with one smoker, but a table lookup of smokers v lung cancer victims will get you a 404 error. Try it.
That's religion. People needing an evil, ignoring the facts, suppressing the research of facts, all holding hands and attacking with fervor.
P.S.
My lungs get a clean bill of health every year, even though I've been smoking for over 20 years, simply because I've never tell the doctors I smoke. Ask your smoking friends to try that, it'll give them a chuckle.

You obviously didn't look very hard for data then. With almost zero effort I just came accross this in a high-profile peer-reviewed medical journal. There are hundreds of studies comparing mortality rates between smokers and non-smokers with data going back 100 years. I just want to point out the data in that study was from 1951-2001. In "survival rates from age 35" the difference in survival rates between smokers and non-smokers increases to about 20% difference by age 70. That is, you are looking at about 20% of all non-smokers being dead and 40% of all smokers dead. You can always look at the graphs for much more information than I can type here, but it's all very damning.

"But cancer continues to rise!" I hear in a myriad of different "X does or doesn't cause cancer" topics. What you mean to say is cancer diagnoses have continued to rise. 50 years ago we knew a fraction of what we know now about cancer. This is just one example of why statistics is a profession. There's so much to it I can't begin to describe it here.

Yeah, he said slavery. I don't smoke but have friends that do. From my perspective as a non-smoker, I do see them as slaves to it, and I don't think anyone could see that unless they are a non-smoker. It goes like this "This is pissing me off, I really need a cigarette." Actually needing something as a response to a hardship with the hope of obtaining relief from it, is very much slavery. Call it an "addiction" but the chains that bind are the same none-the-less.

Guy smokes first joint and attempts to play it cool (16s)

Quboid says...

It's funny, but my first joint wasn't much different except that I had the sense to not try to play it cool. When I was in Amsterdam at first, my friend wanted to smoke in a coffee shop and I was like "uh, no, I'm gonna cough and splutter so at least let me practise at the hotel". We did, I coughed and cried, but soon got the hang of it. Like this guy (presumably), I'm a non-smoker so it's rough at first. After a couple I'd got the hang of it, I'm sure I looked like a newbie when we did go to coffee shops but nothing too tragic. Hash still makes me cough something awful.

Damn I want to go to Amsterdam so much. It is the best place in the world and not (just) because of the coffee shops.

@aceofkidneys - like me, he'll hardly have got anything from that. He coughed it out as soon as it hit the back of his throat, it doesn't look like any got into his lungs, never mind holding it.
