Tree-climbing pro, Nat Geo photog gets shot of a lifetime

spoco2 says...

Yeah, as far as nature photos go, I'd rate it pretty damn low.

The setup, and how he does it is amazing, but the end result... 'meh'. He has a lot of better ones in his gallery

Filibuster politics? Call me a stickler for the proper use of language, but a filibuster is the blocking of legislation in the Senate by forcing a failed cloture vote. That has not happened a single time since Obama took office. Certainly not in 2008-2010 when the Democrats controlled both the House AND the Senate with iron-clad majorities.

Which isn't to say that the Republicans aren't doing everything they can to stall Obama's legislation. To which I say, "Good". The majority of Americans are opposed to Obama's legislative efforts. The GOP wouldn't be doing thier job if they weren't slamming on the brakes. That's what the opposition party is supposed to do. Democrats did it to Bush when they could, and I didn't hear any Boo-Hooing about "filibuster politics" from the peanut gallery at that point. Such "filibuster politics" was rather lauded as I recall when it was Bush on the business end of it. In fact, I recall clearly the Neolibs were all upset and hysterical that the Democrats didn't do a lot MORE "filibuster politics" when they were in the minority.

Oh youre so right, I really fancy arguing that there is no battery here, perhaps common assault but who gives a fuck... Seriously dude, you need to get off that high horse and realise your opinions are as inconsequential as the very short period of time this vid will be visible and about as important. Meanwhile why don't you spend your energies somewhere more meaningful, like lying down in the road to peacefully protest whatever it is that Peace Will Find a Way Weekly tells you is flavour of the month - perhaps articulated lorries. This is all rather boring now and lets face it, yesterdays news. You go ahead and butthurt rage a little more, i'm moving on. Peace out Mannnn.

{edit} gah im breaking my golden rule of not arguing with retards on vs, ah well. You think everyone should research the vagaries of common assault vs battery before commenting on a video about someone trying to grab the olympic torch... hokay. How about I stick to commenting on the video at hand and leave the shouty shouty nerd rage to the people like yourself, who try to turn every post into an emotional battle, presumably because thats how you get your emotional needs met rather than learning how to interact in the real world. Im sorry you feel that way, hope you get fixed soon. Im going to leave you alone now.

So, in other words, you were completely wrong, got schooled, and now you're playing the "waaah, I'm not talking to you" card. About what I'd expect...

The ideal of peaceful protest is one of the great propaganda victories of repressive government.
'You can have your little protest as long as you don't actually try to accomplish anything. We can steal billions of public money to fund a PR stunt for our nationalist authority, effectively equivalent to several days of forced labour for everyone in the UK, but if you try to grab a torch we bought with your money then you're a violent criminal.'

Er, yeah, if you assault someone then you are a violent criminal. Quelle fucking surprise.
And I never said you couldn't be disruptive. He could have gotten a group of people to lie down on the road in front of the torch bearer, he could have streaked along side her, he could have done something vaguely clever or even funny. A funny story will bring attention to your cause (see the Yes Men and the Arctic Ready campaign).
Unfortunately, those things require wit and imagination, two attributes he clearly lacks.
Meanwhile, most of the rest of us simply don't give a fuck. Why? Because, frankly, the Olympics ranks pretty low on the list of things to be concerned about.

@Quboid - I dunno about "Luddites", but to each his own. If people don't find a smartphone/tablet/whatever useful, then they shouldn't buy one. Cost/benefit isn't the same for everyone.

I have a Galaxy S 2 also, but I'm not much of a "cloud" person. I have gmail and some picasa galleries to share photos with my folks, and that is about it. No facebook or anything like that. I mainly use the phone for games, eBook reading (took me forever to be a convert to this, but "night" modes with white text on black background fixed eyestrain issues I originally had with moving away from ink on paper), music, and roadtrip GPS.

None of that is exactly universal must-have functionality. So while I'm personally happy with my purchase, I fully understand the folks that are resistant or hesitant to jump on the new-tech bandwagon.

Well they're depressive individuals.
Really, what was the point of that? I got bored with it I'm afraid as it was harping on its same point 'people in power are bad' over and over... quite tedious.
And yup, when you browse their gallery of shots from the movie with their wanky descriptions of them, it only further enforces what a load of largely pointless dribble this is.
Quite pretty, nicely animated, to be sure, but what is the POINT?

i think the point a lot of art is to open the door to your interpretation.

Hmm, not really here. They're pretty fricken blatent with their symbolism. Problem is, they just keep on with the symbolism for 7 minutes after they've made the point. And there's no story to interest over the top of it, it's just a bunch of symbolism, and that's it... doesn't make for interesting viewing. Show the 'evil' government and 'evil' society and 'evil' religion and then show how to rise against it, or rise above it, or protect yourself from it... OR SOMETHING.
But all this does is go
"Hey, the government is crap"
"So's religion"
"Society as a whole sucks arse and is over sexualised"
...
...
"Nope, that's it, I've got nothing else, just thought I'd say that"
That's such shallow rubbish. You could either show some way to combat the crap, OR, maybe show the deeper root cause of these things, show the simple core problem that feeds those things, and so maybe offer a way to combat them that way.
All this does is say 'We're really depressed about shit'
Art that leaves it up to your interpretation can actually be taken a number of ways... this not so much.

I totally agree but I found the animation to be more than pretty. Great expression, motion and mood. I watched it over and over for the presentation, but not so much for the meaning - which as you say is a bit overdone. The quality of the animation is top notch - in the realm of excellence.
