I Dare You To Steal The Olympic Torch. I DARE YOU!

I wonder what the charge is for trying to extinguish a worthless symbol. I would like to take like 10 people and do this, probably wouldn't get more than disturbance misdemeanor or something. They couldn't really legally justify more...it's not assault, it might be theft if anything.

So what happened after they got you to the ground and whooped your ass?

Maurusays...

So let's say you got this giant party keg at your party of 150 of your friends. Some idiot runs up and knocks it over. You'd be pissed.

Now imagine the party-keg is a torch and the party is like a lot larger. They also just furiously debated about world politics, health and sportsmanship. THEY ALSO DID IT FOR A LONG TIME.

You might just as well walk over to mekka and shit on the prophet's stone. Being pushed off a road by a bunch of jogging, silly looking bodyguards seems pretty civilized to me.

If you want a world without symbols... dude, that's a mighty off-road plan.

Good for this guy, Hate the olympics, not usually but im a londoner. Not allowed to wear pepsi t-shirts, eat non-mcdonald fries, use a mastercard in the olympic village, zil lanes, not allowed to link to the locog website with 'derogatory' comments, locog refusing to release ticket details because all the prestige events sold to sponsors... All organised by that smug git Lord Coe. The sport comes a distant second.

The whole ritual is rather silly. What does that stick signify? A lot of corrupt IOC officials and corporate interests.

Looks like if you had three guys rushing you could definitely take it and throw it in a nearby canel

GlasWolfsays...

And of course don't forget: £12 billion. TWELVE fucking BILLION fucking POUNDS. To stage a 3 week sporting event, with no evidence of any economic or health benefits in return. Shameful.

Let's say you're paying for the party with other people's money, and you're so fucking arrogant every time something like this happens you act as if you have the moral high ground.

Maurusays...

I think we can all agree that this turn of olympics is about as twisted as such an event can be. I can totally understand the need to somehow sabotage that.
However, there is a lot of things wrong with it that are not related to its economic impact which should be far more important to hate about it.

Still, props to the *British security detail. Presumably some SAS/SBS types?

[edit: read the article - ah, 'regular' cops rather than the special forces... still, well done)

Do all the haters here not understand the Olympics is not about idolatry it's not about making money it's not even about the sports. It's about the ENTIRE world coming together every 2 years and regardless of our differences, regardless of the petty wars we have started, and regardless of our prejudice. That for the span of time during the games we as a planet engage in a single combined cooperative effort to have fair competition in the spirit of peace and goodwill and not to bicker, fight, and kill each until it ends. The Olympics even got Hitler to stop fighting during the Berlin games. ANY symbolic event that can stop an entire world war is something we should cherish and uphold till the end of time. And if supporting and believing in a symbol of PEACE like the Olympic Flame is idolatry than mark me a pagan and God have mercy on the soul of any moron who would extinguish one of the few true symbols of peace this world as a whole still holds dear. I for one hope they take that moron to the Hague and charge him with treason against the world. I mean really people how can you seriously hate the Olympics unless you hate peace. Are you all war mongers?!

For the sake of argument, let's agree that the Olympics was a once great idea hijacked by corporate marketing and political interests.

Now tell me where you think that gives anyone the right to fucking assault some poor woman.

That was assault was it? The bit where she had to hang onto the torch? Actually the torch was assaulted. Maybe you should shout about olympic torch rights in block! Angry Angry huff huff.

Let's be clear, this wasn't some legitimate, peaceful protest. There are any number of ways he could have done that.

Instead he runs out from the crowd and tries to grab the torch. How is that anything but assault? Also, I note that he didn't try this when there was a larger male athlete carrying it. He waited for a woman. He's a coward.
Forget the olympics. Forget the crowd. If I saw this happen on the street, I'd smack the shit outta that guy. The only thing that would have been better would have been if the woman had beaten his ass herself.

Auger8says...

If I spit in your direction with the intent of hitting you and I miss it's assault. Look it up. If you try to hit someone with your fist and connect it's battery. Maybe you should actually learn about laws before you talk shit about them.

The ideal of peaceful protest is one of the great propaganda victories of repressive government.

'You can have your little protest as long as you don't actually try to accomplish anything. We can steal billions of public money to fund a PR stunt for our nationalist authority, effectively equivalent to several days of forced labour for everyone in the UK, but if you try to grab a torch we bought with your money then you're a violent criminal.'

{edit} gah im breaking my golden rule of not arguing with retards on vs, ah well. You think everyone should research the vagaries of common assault vs battery before commenting on a video about someone trying to grab the olympic torch... hokay. How about I stick to commenting on the video at hand and leave the shouty shouty nerd rage to the people like yourself, who try to turn every post into an emotional battle, presumably because thats how you get your emotional needs met rather than learning how to interact in the real world. Im sorry you feel that way, hope you get fixed soon. Im going to leave you alone now.

I love the part about the teenager screaming "Allahu Akbar!". Was he trolling Islamists? Has muslim terrorism "sunk" this low? Or perhaps Allah, the one who gives infidels new skin in hell so he can burn them again, is afraid the earthlings are stealing his thunder fire?

So, in other words, you were completely wrong, got schooled, and now you're playing the "waaah, I'm not talking to you" card. About what I'd expect...

Er, yeah, if you assault someone then you are a violent criminal. Quelle fucking surprise.

And I never said you couldn't be disruptive. He could have gotten a group of people to lie down on the road in front of the torch bearer, he could have streaked along side her, he could have done something vaguely clever or even funny. A funny story will bring attention to your cause (see the Yes Men and the Arctic Ready campaign).

Unfortunately, those things require wit and imagination, two attributes he clearly lacks.

Meanwhile, most of the rest of us simply don't give a fuck. Why? Because, frankly, the Olympics ranks pretty low on the list of things to be concerned about.

thumpa28says...

Oh youre so right, I really fancy arguing that there is no battery here, perhaps common assault but who gives a fuck... Seriously dude, you need to get off that high horse and realise your opinions are as inconsequential as the very short period of time this vid will be visible and about as important. Meanwhile why don't you spend your energies somewhere more meaningful, like lying down in the road to peacefully protest whatever it is that Peace Will Find a Way Weekly tells you is flavour of the month - perhaps articulated lorries. This is all rather boring now and lets face it, yesterdays news. You go ahead and butthurt rage a little more, i'm moving on. Peace out Mannnn.

Way to start the assault argument, then get corrected, then blame the person who corrected you for being so immature to participate in the argument that you started. That is some top notch 'whiny-brat' behavior right there, well done son.

P.S. Yes, I know you aren't my son.
