The HongKongiest piece of filmmaking you'll see this week

Nice. I haven't seen many of To's films, though I checked out Drug War a few weeks back and quite enjoyed it. I think I'll have to seek this one out.

David Sirota had an interesting article the other day, where he made the case that the campaign to illustrate the relative harmlessness of weed compared to alcohol was crucial in Colorado.

Riverside Cop Tricks Autistic Teen into Buying Pot

This beyond shameful practice needs to be loudly and publicly shoved in the federal governments face, demanding a stop to funding a quota based drug war targeting defenseless special needs children. As if it isn't evil enough to manipulate impressionable, peer pressure driven kids without going after easy targets already ostracized by whatever condition, making them even more vulnerable.

Isn't there a special level of hell reserved for those who hurt children for profit?

Retired police Captain demolishes the War on Drugs

non_sequitur_per_se says...

Lol, there are plenty of ways for a retired police captain to profit off the drug war. So no, I don't agree with you.

Also, even if there was no "drug war" when he was on active duty he would have still collected a paycheck. Last time I checked police do more than just fight a drug war.

Why is a retired police captain calling for the legalization of drugs? Because he's not pulling a paycheck any more from the drug war. It's more profitable for him to call for it's end than participate in it at this particular point in his career.

Hey argument mongers! YEAH YOUSE! This is a great video so why don't we respect it and resist the temptation to turn this into another gun rights flame war (incidentally, another war that cannot be "won"). There is a place for that discussion and it's not here. Move along. Theenks.

I love when retired police officers step forward and slowly rip apart the drug war with facts, experience and wisdom. Seems the sad truth is that the U.S. government, (which is currently in the habit of displaying a level of insanity fit for a corporate-emperor-giant-king via what it says to the public versus what it actually does in its slowly eroding privacy) clearly doesn't seem to actually want to end the drug war or the war on terror for that matter any time soon. i guess there is too much profit to be had from the institutions that are already in place at this point.

With luck, the Nixon/Reagan-esque dinosaurs of free will control, hiding behind the thin guise of morality, which they surely are not the paragons of, will soon be trapped within their sedimentary prison for all time and We the people will be able to choose what kind of substances we ingest without the looming shadow of silent oppression casting its all encompassing umbra upon us.

Piers Morgan: "You are an incredibly stupid man"

200 years?! But I want it NOWWWW!

That makes sense, sort of...except for the fact that there could still be an influx of guns from outside of the US (mainly from Mexico). Unfortunately as the US is continually learning with the drug war, prohibition doesn't work. As long as these things that people want exist, and the technology is there to make it, it will be made, and traded for. Because, like you said, guns are a part of our culture (or the wingnuts culture).

If you want my honest opinion about guns; I don't give a shit if somebody wants to own guns or if they don't. At least nobody's throwing acid in people's faces *ahem*

KnivesOut said:

@rottenseed I agree that it won't be an over-night operation. The wingnuts would absolutely freak out if the evil gubment actually did "COME FOR OUR GUNS". We'd have a civil war.

The long view is to start reducing the number of guns produced. Start making it more difficult to get them. Start buying guns back from the citizenry at market prices (and then destroy them.)

This might be a 200 year plan...

Pot Legal in 2 States, Drug Czars Panic -- TYT

Yogi says...

Which makes Obama complicit in the Drug War that ruins peoples lives. I've seen it first hand young black children who have a little weed on them put in jail, taken out of school for years forgotten by society. You'd think Obama, who was a young black pot smoker would have some idea of what the drug war is doing to the black community.

He doesn't want to be the president that legalized pot, fine. But we know the consequences and their serious and long term. He's a bastard, just like all the rest.

"regulating the economy"?

"attacking gun control"?

From what I recall, regulation of our economy has been watered down to the point where we have corporate welfare and the public picks up the tab when things go bust, as they just recently did. Wall Street got off scott-free, was given boatloads of money, while millions were foreclosed on, lost their jobs, healthcare and net worth. I'd like you to point out one negative regulation of the economy that has happened during this Democratic presidency.

As for gun control: What are you on about? Obama is the one who eased gun control laws and concealed carry permits in federal parks. Please name a single gun control law that Obama has "attacked".

I believe I am entitled to an opinion, so I'll share mine:
People call me a democrat, a republican, and a libertarian. I don't subscribe to any. I don't like democrats for regulating the economy and attacking gun control; I don't like republicans for violating personal rights (women) and drug wars, and I don't like libertarians for their ideological castration of government services. My ideal federal government is one that protects your human rights, educates you when you are young, and takes care of you when you are old or sick. I would gladly pay my taxes for these three key points. Everything else should rest with the states.
