Why Being Honest about Ghostbusters is Important

Imagoamin says...

I've seen it. It was indeed funny AND entertaining. I enjoyed it about as much as I enjoyed Ghostbusters 2, which was a much lazier rehash of the same premise of the first movie to cash in on the name.

Yet...somehow, people don't remember the second movie that way. But they, having not seen it in a lot of cases, view this movie as an A-Bomb for the movie industry. The most scorn worthy example of remakes ever! Most disliked trailer in youtube history! Yet....somehow, the same fate didn't befall TMNT, Transformers, Robocop, et all.

But we also forget, some of our most beloved genre movies and well liked films were remakes of older movies before our time. The Thing, The Fly, The Departed, True Grit, 12 Monkeys, etc. It's not that it's evil ole hollywood "not having original ideas and scripts", because we have unoriginal ideas and scripts in the hallows of nerd fandom.

Really seems like there is one sort of X-Factor about this particular remake of a previous nerd-centric IP that set it apart from all the others people ignored or fell in love in with....

How to respond to bigotry with tolerance and integrity.

Q: What's the "Australian way of life" to you?
A: Well, it's certainly not people your age skating up and down the footpath.

That's a WTF worthy non-sequitur right there. Is she implying that only dirty furriner kids would skate on footpaths? [insert JackieChanWhatIdonteven.gif]

I agree, kudos to the young man for taking it in stride.

Woman Refuses to Leave Uber Car

ChaosEngine says...

Quoting and responding..

"Well, yes and no. If you're being dumped somewhere that there's no landmarks and/or no cell service, you might have an argument that getting out puts you in danger, but that's certainly not the case here. "

Already agreed this isn't the case here. Twice, in fact

"I think that's the risk you take when you decide to go with Uber. You pay less, you get a certain type of service, but you have less recourse if it goes bad. "

Sorry, but no. There's still a base level of service to be expected.

"I don't disagree that he reacted poorly."

That's really my main point. You can be 100% in the right and still act like an asshole. If he had remained calm and called the police this video would've gotten no traction at all.

"He is NOT a taxi driver, he's an Uber driver. I disagree, Uber does not =taxi. Taxi=taxi...Limo=>taxi ...Uber ="

This is probably worthy of a separate discussion, but since we're here...

I 100% disagree with this. Uber is a taxi service, just a really poorly run one. They've just started in my hometown and they are actually encouraging drivers to break the law. In NZ, you are legally required to have a passenger endorsement to carry passengers for profit, but Uber just told their drivers "eh, don't worry about it, you'll be sweet" and then left them twisting in the wind when the government went "er, no, we weren't fucking joking", and started clamping down.

Frankly, the more I learn about Uber, the less I am inclined to use their service. I like some of what they're doing, but it's complete bullshit they way they treat their drivers.

Most of all, I hate the way they claim to be a "ride-sharing" company. If someone was setting up a service of "I'm going to the airport, want to share fuel/parking costs?" that's ride sharing (I think Lyft do that??). But that's not the Uber model. The driver is going where you tell them. That's a taxi.

Sidenote: I really wish we could have the old quote system back. Replying to long quotes like this is a pain in the arse now.

Fox News vs Harvard On ISIS Turns Into Ignorance Fest

00Scud00 says...

I love Cenk and TYT but that was a little cringe worthy. Let's watch the Fox News presenter mock perfectly good arguments with silly voices and acting. And then mock Fox News with our own silly voices and acting. (Picard facepalm)
And they are quite right about American foreign policy being a big reason behind the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. I wonder what Iran would look like today if we hadn't ousted the Iranian Prime Minister back in '53, simply to keep Iran from nationalizing their oil supply.

The Worst Intersection in West LA

SDGundamX says...

LOL, the end clip alone is Sift-worthy. But seriously, fuck that intersection. If I lived in that neighborhood I'd try to find a backroad way to get to my house. The extra five minutes is well worth the thousands of $$$ I'd save from my insurance rate skyrocketing after an accident.

Actually, come to think of it, fuck LA in general. I lived there in the late 90s and it was already completely overcrowded. I can't imagine how bad things must be nowadays.

No worries

You know, by awarding @oblio70 with a pp for this sift talk post, you've pretty much proved your statement wrong

It's not solely videos posted, you can also get star points by posting sift talk posts that are worthy of a *quality

[...] The sift mechanics in awarding members to more "powers" is unfair to many sifters, as they are solely based on videos sifted.

Dear Gays: The Left Betrayed You For Islam

gorillaman says...

The ugliness of an idea reflects on the people who hold it. Islam is an utterly abhorrent ideology; it must be correct to say that its followers are in some degree less worthy than those who endorse better ethical systems.

Why do muslims deserve to live safely, to be treated with the dignity afforded to human beings, when they deny the same rights to others? There is such a thing as self-defence.

Hey @newtboy, when was the last time the US government executed someone for the crime of homosexuality?

kir_mokum said:

the tricky part i see is the conflating of "islam" with "muslims" and using the ugliness of islam as justification for mistreatment and ostracizing of muslims. sometimes to the extent of treating them as sub human, most notably in refugee conversations. islam is gross, imo, and should be criticized (fervently) but muslims are still people and need to be treated as such, just as the gay community should. they both have the right to live and have the opportunity to live with some semblance of safety. people deserve compassion. ideas do not.

Samantha Bee on Orlando - Again? Again.

newtboy says...

You can say the exact same thing about Christians or Jews. Violence in the name of religion is what a "true believer" does, because any non-believer is an agent of evil, so sub-human and not worthy of empathy or understanding.

It's not the particular brand of religion that's the problem, it's religion itself.

I'm pretty sure that all major religions in one form or another instruct believers to attack non-believers with violence and/or death. Most also contradict themselves by saying violence is wrong, leaving the "rules" open to interpretation, ostensively making all religions nothing more than excuses for atrocities that would otherwise be clearly inexcusable.

Jinx said:

Yeah, the first part is demonstrably false.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike this tendency to revoke terrorist's Muslim cards post-atrocity because a "true" Muslim would never do such a thing, but it kinda goes both way, dunnit? Either you are making some sizable edits to the definition of "peaceful" or you're suggesting that Muslims who don't murder aren't really Muslims. Could it be that "Muslim" isn't as powerful a descriptor as either you or "Muslims" might want it to be?

Sarah Silverman on Why You Should Vote (For Bernie)

eric3579 says...

Yes, it might be sufficient but still a shit reason as it sounds belittling. He's better than that. He's not just the one to vote for due to who's running against him. He's actually someone i'm excited to vote for regardless of who's running. Just my opinion. Clinton on the other hand(if she beats bernie) will be who i vote for NOT because shes worthy(cos i think shes shit) but because she (im guessing)will be the 'least worst' of my choices.

ChaosEngine said:

I have a much more concise reason.

He's not Clinton, Cruz or Trump.

Surely that is sufficient reason?

Trump Ad of Hillary like a Barking Dog - Donald Trump March

newtboy says...

Disappointing.
This CAN'T be a real campaign advertisement and I think it must be someone's dumb internet video. There's no way the Trump campaign would use the line "We don't need to be a punchline" when 70% of the country and 95% of the planet think that's what HE is, and they know it.
Aside from that bit of hilarity borne from a complete lack of awareness, it was pretty dumb. They could, and should have done much better with the barking Hillary clip.
Not really worth a downvote, but certainly not worthy of an upvote for me.
