America can't even have a Christmas Tree in public anymore because of the other religions and groups.

Thats terrible - one less legit reason to rain down fabulousness and tinsel on an otherwise standard, straight up and down tree.

"Single parent"
That single parent is biologically related, not someone off the street.

Word yo. Tell the limp wristies how it is. I really admire your ability to cut to the core of the issue. Thats why it hurts so much to tell you you're adopted.

You have the right to move out of America, but is the only country that can support you, that is why you whine like a girl, er guy, er girl.

Yeah, thats right - America is the only sovereign nation that would support you. Here in Australia we eat gays (Burger King over here is called Hungry Jacks, named after Hugh Jackman, who fucking LOVES nothing more to gob down on the gay man).

God why cant people see the wonderful world HoooootLava, number 646, is painting?

Groove - Bedrock - Heaven Scent (Digweed arrives)

Upvote because I love this song dearly. Plus, while searching for it on Napster (back in the day), I found Esthero's "Heaven Sent," which introduced me to the wonderful world of Trip Hop.

I think we are sliding into the wonderful world of personal attacks. :-/

I don't think that MY sympathy is particularly precious, but it is quite obvious that YOU think mine and all others are.

""but then it's all about personal point of view" -- Is it? I think when it comes to empathy and compassion either you feel it or you don't. There's no intellectualizing before hand. You and many here have been deadened. I haven't been."

Oh please, get of your high horse. It IS about point of view, there are no absolutes about compassion/empathy/sympathy whatever you want to call it and it's a sliding scale. If you feel that you're better than us, because you haven't "deadened" that must be so nice for you.

" I do resent that you blame all of us of lacking compassion, just because we laugh..." -- at a child who has suffered a significant crush injury due to his childish mischief. And yet if only you were a little ashamed and not resentful. Then you would know that your humanity was beginning to thaw.

"A child" is a bit misleading, isn't it? He's not an infant - he must, or should, know what would happen. I feel no shame for laughing at his misfortune and I still resent that you make generalizing arguments about my and others compassion and humanity based on this. I feel no compassion for this "child", but that does not mean much in real life.

Liz Trotta is SO sorry for talking about knocking off Obama

Fedquip says...

I know what you mean Mink, it would be a wonderful world when none of us joke about each other dying in a fire. Dying in a fire is no laughing matter.

But I think there is a legitimate reason for an outcry and anger towards the lady on Fox News. I understand your points, but for me there is just something wrong about diverting the outcry away from the Fox News lady an onto our sifting friend Blankman?

Japanese multi-level bicycle parking

SDGundamX says...

Proving once again that Japan is the wild, wonderful world of wtf.

This is brilliant for Tokyo, though, because so many people bike to the train stations that the area surrounding a station is perpetually overflowing with bikes. It must be a real bitch though when this thing breaks down and some poor guy has to climb down there and retrieve the bikes by hand.

Some of the stats from the video:

1) It can retrieve a bike in 23 seconds.
2) The lot holds 9400 bikes total.
3) Each underground chamber is 15m deep and 7m in diameter.
4) One chamber holds 180 bikes; 36 chambers total under the station (I guess the remaining bikes are stored upstairs because 180*36 != 9400)
5) Rental cost is 100 yen per day (about $1 US) or 1800 yen per month (about $17.50 US).

Channeling in (Sift Talk Post)

I think you're on to something with the meme channel. That's great. Who cares about languages and countries outside the US. That's all gay stuff. Wait, did I just turn into quantummushroom? Yikes! I meant to say all of your ideas are super awesome and I love everyone and everything in this wide, green, wonderful world! Can't be more anti-quantummushroom than that.

Atheism: the belief that others actually care about one's lack of belief

Quoted for stupidity.

As for the show, it seems to fail at its intent, which is to be an atheist show for non-atheists. Though I agree with the arguments in general, if they are going to talk to non-atheists, they need to gear down to the level of the caller.

For instance, the caller says "Who created everything?" A more appropriate answer would have been "Your question implies that there had to be a conscious mind behind creation. There is simply no evidence for that, and you won't find evidence through introspection or nature appreciation. Science explains a lot about how the world around us came to be, and we're discovering new things all the time. There is absolutely no evidence for a single all-powerful creator, and I don't need to believe in one to be able to appreciate the wonderful world we live in."

Address the poorly worded question if you must, but the idea behind the question is what is really important if you want to teach people about a different way to live. They get caught up in semantics and make themselves look like arrogant assholes who are lording it over the uneducated.

Genetic Engineering: Glowing Pigs and Fish

Crosswords says...

The wonderful world of transgenics. I think the narrator needs to go back to school and learn about the basics of sex and reproduction. The florescent fish's inability to mate with a shark isn't based on its size its based on it being a completely different species. Now if they started doing this to every species, then yeah there should probably be some level of worry. I'd say one the same level of when a non-native species gets lose and is very destructive on native organisms. Since they're already mucking about the genes they might be able to create fish that produce sterile offspring. That way you have a set of breeding fish that produce sterile fish sold on the market.

Bruddah Iz sings a beautiful Hawaiian song: Ka Pua U'i

spoco2 says...

Just beautiful, beautiful. I love his version of 'Over the Rainbow' (which has Wonderful World mixed with it, not wonderful life)...

It's sad to see his size though, as that is what took him from us far, far too early.

Yeah, it's a fucked up paradigm we're caught in, eh qualm?? It would be a wonderful world, had the bomb never existed, huh??? This post represents a closed chapter in one man's life-not an endorsement of dropping bombs-Had Germany been given a bit more time to develop their bomb, would we now be speaking German and Japanese?? Would there be a lot of folks you know around, or would they have never been born? Many other meaningless questions left unasked, the point is, this is the current paradigm, on planet paradise, and this is part of it-simply shattered, someone din't like the little mash.....

Carl Sagan's Cosmos - Tesseract

rougy says...

"...those wonderful worlds and states you transiently explore only exist in that great mass of electrochemistry that is your personal brain."

Perhaps. Water is water whether it's in a coffee cup or the wide blue sea.

But a coffee cup is nothing like the wide blue sea.

When a person's consciousness leaves the sphere of normality there is really no significant distinction between here or there, subjectively speaking, and all experience is subjective.

Yes - Salvia D is singular regarding the psychotropes. It is the closest thing I've ever experienced that could be considered being on a different dimension (maybe the second, maybe the fourth, I can't say).

(P.S. bamdrew - thanks for that link - great animation)

Carl Sagan's Cosmos - Tesseract

bamdrew says...

hmmm... if all the angles were right-angles... thats wild.

On the topic of salvia, remember, those wonderful worlds and states you transiently explore only exist in that great mass of electrochemistry that is your personal brain. Its easy to get caught up in those places but there are some mind-blowing things going on in our shared world as well. Coolest thing about salvia that I've read is its not a serotonin receptor agonist as far as people can determine, but a opioid receptor aganostic. Which is very peculiar for a hallucinogen, and apparently leads to peculiar effects when compared to the classics.

Amazing Health Care in France - Scene from "Sicko"

v1k1n6 says...

I have never agreed with Moore because only one side is presented by people who want their agenda heard. He has always used emotional hijacking as Farhead pointed out. The system is screwy but we need to find a better answer. We seem to want big government but no "big brother", we want free benifits but no taxes. We have to stop speaking out of both sides of "our" mouths first and the politicans will follow.

The health care in Canada and France is free but it's almost 3rd world quality with year long waiting lists but you don't hear that side of the story.

randeepsamra: "Unlimited sick days? House-calls? Government nannies coming to your house to take care of your kids, do your laundry and make dinner? What a strange and wonderful world."

Oh how lazy we have become to actually not just "want" this but where we "expect" this.
