The Misquoted Quran

chilaxe says...

The video doesn't really explain itself, and neither does the videosift description, so this is my understanding of the video's argument:

1. Muslims use this peaceful quote as a defense of the Koran.
2. The Koran does indeed contain that quote, ch. 5 verse 32, but the next verse, 33, doesn't extend that niceness to people 'who wage war against Allah and make mischief in the land,' calling for their execution.

That seems like a fair point, and Muslims should definitely be forthcoming about it instead of getting defensive, but verse 33 doesn't actually seem to me to be bad at all if you interpret it the right way.

(The full verses can be read in multiple translations at the link provided in the videosift description: http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/quran/005.qmt.html )

On civility, name calling and the Sift (Fear Talk Post)

marinara says...

The punishments of those who wage war against Allah and His Prophet and strive to spread disorder in the land are to execute them in an exemplary way or to crucify them or to amputate their hands and feet from opposite sides or to banish them from the land. Such is their disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom save those who repent before you overpower them; you should know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Ever Merciful.
source is Koran surah 5:33.

Is anyone here really trying to spread disorder across the sift?

What we have here is squabbles.

... The pursuit of interests generates various types of conflict. Thus conflict is seen as a normal aspect of social life rather an abnormal occurrence. Competition over resources is often the cause of conflict
source: wikipedia

The sift should have a positive atmosphere, period.

But banhammers aren't going to start disputes from starting, these disputes are just going to simmer underground.

If flamewars spill over into every channel, see my Koran quote above. Cut them up.

The Dems hoped someone would make an omelet. That's their big threat. Feed them. Ratchet it up a bit to ... Slap someone. Spit on them. Plus a couple of ugly and maybe not ugly observations about what other people might do of their own accord.

No direct threats that incite violent action that would lead to loss of life. None.

That intifada thing is the closest thing about inciting to violence. It wasn't a politician who said it, it was clearly not a planned speech, it was something said in the heat of the moment. But I'll halfway grant you that one. Reluctantly.

I think you have to give it up, Q. That, or find some better examples. These don't make it.

KKK agenda sounds familiar

dystopianfuturetoday says...

If you are going to wage war on diversity, start with your clothes. You are wearing way too much color for a white supremacist. Stick with classic white. Not only is it more elegant, but it is also more aesthetically thematic to your cause. Was this was filmed after labor day?

New York Times Beats Drums for War with IRAN

Yogi says...

"This is exactly the same sets of steps they took before invading Iraq. First sanctions, then false accusations, and invasion."

The problem with this is that it is against our policy to wage War against anyone who can defend themselves. Just look at the past conflicts after Vietnam, every country we've attacked is extremely weak militarily, nearly completely helpless and cannot defend itself whatsoever. Iran is not that, they can defend themselves somewhat, so we're not going to attack them because it's not smart. The American people are sick of these sorts of wars but they tolerate them when we steamroll the fizuck out of fools. If we actually started to incur some real loses (See Iraq) they will start getting really riled just like in the 60's. Policy makers know this and they aren't going to risk something like this. So although I deplore the saber rattling towards Iran, we're not going to invade them which is a sign at how far we've come as a nation.

World of Warcraft - Cataclysm Cinematic Intro

AnimalsForCrackers says...

>> ^Enzoblue:

Seems funny to me that no one mentions Everquest any more. Now it's like WoW is the only mmo that ever was. Everquest was the first online game to have an economy larger than some 3rd world nations. I played it for 3 yrs or so and I still miss it sometimes.

I'm right with you there! The economy was much more player driven in EQ, without limits/restrictions put in place such as Bind on Equip/Soulbound armor (the most epic of the epic stuff was indeed non-tradable). Once you were done with a piece of armor you could easily resell it to another player. It was really fun to haggle with people/search for deals and just upright barter.

The whole game in general was just more player driven, and less rigorously structured around soloing: especially the PvP servers, with the pro-PK vs the pacifistic non-PK guilds, waging war and providing either their protection to newbs from highway thieves or pillaging certain zones of all players and looting the spoils. Not to mention all the social intrigue of player alliances, betrayals, guild spies and secret plots to overthrow/assassinate and usurp leaders, bounty hunters, and tests of loyalty to your compatriots. Such a dynamic has never existed in any other MMO, to my knowledge. It was a hard, unforgiving place where loyalty was worth more than any piece of gear.

If you're interested in revisiting Classic EQ PVE progression for FREE (Kunark is being beta'd atm and then Velious) I'd check out Project 1999, the finest private server available for purely Classic EQ, no custom modifications just the real deal. I have a level 37 Darkelf necro and have been playing fairly regularly, the server population is pretty good and everyone is friendly, helpful towards newbs as well. You wouldn't believe how happy I was when I discovered P99 and ended up seeing a few people I remember from my dear old Quellious server. It really is everything one could ask for considering Live EQ1, at this state, is an abomination. Well, there it is. Try it out, I'll help you get started right! PM me if you decide to come back to Norrath, this also goes for anyone else on the Sift who would try it/return. It really surprised me how harsh they start you out in that game after years of WoW, one needs all the help they can get.

Great WoW trailer as well, and I love Blizzard, but I just can't get back into the game despite my attempts to literally will myself into playing. I really feel as if I'm just being touted around, top-down style, by Blizzard to do this dungeon or that. My choices feel like they have no real impact on the game world, my actions rarely end up having actual consequences, besides maybe a momentary invconvenience. It's just too damned safe to be exciting! Raids are easy mode, though from all the impressions of Cataclysm is seems like they're trying to return to form of having the content be much more stimulating, brain intensive. If raiding becomes more like pre-BC/BC then I will return. I will most definitely at the very least try Cataclysm and see what happens.

Uh Oh!

Some spoiler content in this:
I understand that in the end, you're praising the show and the wonderful character that is Walter Bishop, but I've got to question- Your one gripe about a sci-fi show about an alternate universe waging war on us is that it's not very realistic? I just had to ask. Other than that, I couldn't agree more. Nolan is a wonderful actor, and if Fringe was a more popular program, they'd be throwing Emmys his way for his performance. He's had me to the point of tears in some scenes.
>> ^mgittle:

Despite all the terrible bunk "science" stuff on Fringe, it's a great show simply because of Walter's interactions with all the other characters.
I'm not usually one to put aside terribly unrealistic stuff, but for this show I gladly make an exception.

Police kidnapping in Toronto

Kevlar says...

I vote this a *quality topic for discussion, despite the video spelling. Try to count the number of plainclothes cops involved in the snatch and grab and you'll run out of fingers.

Without additional evidence, in presence of what appears to be a peaceful assembly, can we not begin to reason from this video that the police are openly waging war on our will to conduct peaceful protests? If so, it's time to start conducting protests as though in war. No more megaphones, or enough distributed through the crowd to make it impossible to grab every 'leader'. No more cameras swirling around certain individuals, thus revealing their rank. Anonymity. Manpower. Strength. I don't know nor care what the protest is about anymore - this behavior cannot stand.

Afghanistan: We're f*#!ing losing this thing

NetRunner says...

@Winstonfield_Pennypacker I think you're still not engaging the central criticism several of us are leveling at you -- there's a moral problem with military targeting civilian population centers.

Add to this that in the case of our "war on terror", what we're really involved in here is a sort of international law enforcement effort. We weren't attacked by the military of Afghanistan, and we're not fighting their military now. We're looking for what amount to organized criminals operating within the borders of sovereign foreign nations. We're not looking to destroy the effectiveness of the Afghani people to wage war on us with their military, we're looking to stop a bunch of Timothy McVeighs in a country that doesn't really have any sort of governmental enforcement of law and order.

What you're talking about is a tactic I would argue was only barely justified to stop the Axis powers in WWII, against a country whose only crime is failing to root out criminals within their midst who merely have aspirations of launching an attack on US soil.

Just imagine if Timothy McVeigh had decided to blow up some important building in China instead of the US. Would China be justified in invading us, overthrowing our government and installing a puppet government, then bombing our infrastructure and civilian centers until they felt sure they'd killed every last member of a militia group in the US?
