The Big Misconception About Electricity

vil says...

Nah I dont see a bait and switch. I see people thinking electricity goes down wires while the underlying real world is fields propagating through space.

It really is a difference if you have the lightbulb 1 meter away or 1 light second away. We have a tendency to think abstractly of these situations, freely giving things ideal properties that they dont have and taking away the properties we dont like to use in our petty examples.

If you had enough voltage to overcome the drop in "ideal" 1 light second long cables they sure as hell would induce enough current in parallel cables 1 m away to light a bulb :-)

All that said people do under-appreciate how fast the speed of light is, just as they under appreciate how much a billion of anything, especially money, is.

The speed of light is getting to your destination instantly from your own point of view.

Evolution of Electronic Music (1929 - 2019)

kir_mokum says...

really random selection of some of the worst music out there.

i really dislike that this is how a lot of people view electronic music. most of this is pop music and it completely ignores the huge innovations that happened in house, techno, jungle, dubstep, garage, ambient, etc. in the last 40 years. the impact of electronic music has been chronically under appreciated since it's inception.

The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America

Drax says...

Teachers have one of the most under appreciated jobs out there. I think a lot of bad teachers are in place because of that fact (it's not the most appealing career), not some crazy conspiracy. This video does them (especially the truely good ones) a bit of a disservice.

Almost want to downvote, but there's, in a way, some truth behind this. Though I can't tell if it's exploiting that angle, or just overzealous in it's delivery.

12 Unwritten Social Rules You Need to Follow

Trancecoach says...

The CPB (Cars Per Block) rule is seriously under-appreciated. In San Francisco, people will park in a space that could easily fit three cars in such a way that only one car will fit, presumably to prevent their bumpers from being bumped. It's such a dick-move and makes me want to "bump your bumper" even more.

How do you feel about the current promote system? (User Poll by Hybrid)

Deano says...

I'm not voting for any of those options.

Instead I wonder if there's mileage in rethinking the site navigation. Because putting promoted videos at the top of other videos seems a bit awkward if you think about it. And from there we have differing design options that seem to satisfy no one.

Look at it now;
VIDEOS - COMMENTS - CHANNELS - USERS - SIFT TALK FORUM - MY VIDEOSIFT

For a site concerned mainly about the viewing and sharing of quality videos I just feel this isn't quite right. The VIDEOS bit is what needs emphasis.
If reorganised you could provide an obvious entry point for promoted videos and other video content.

Let's look at what we could do.

Videos. We need all of these, somewhere. Random could go into in the footer. Dead pool and Thumbnails Wanted will need reassigning.

Channels. Who clicks on this? Is it a huge number? Dunno. But it is video-related so let's keep it, I think we'll have space.

Comments, Users and Sift Talk Forum could be combined into one Community link and moved to the right. I certainly don't feel Users deserves it's own space up there.

My Videosift should really be combined with the username on the right. So I'll see Deano and there's a dropdown navigation from that showing the contents of My Videosift.

REVAMPED MAIN NAVIGATION

Let's get to the point;

NEW - UPCOMING - PROMOTED - TOP - CHANNELS - COMMUNITY

All of these are fairly obvious. Community includes the above plus Dead Pool and Thumbnails wanted.

PROMOTED - click here and a nice list of promoted videos gets displayed, interfering with nothing else. Yes you have to click the link but it's a major navigation link.

Not good enough? How about swap PROMOTED with NEW? It becomes the default page of Videosift and we like that because our wonderful users promote great or under appreciated videos. All visitors will like this, rather than the current compromise. And you see ALL the promoted videos.

There are a few things to tidy up here but I quite like it. I know it's unlikely to happen but just wanted to articulate something different.

How is the New Featured *Promote Panel (User Poll by lucky760)

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Sure, happy to provide my view on it - and hopefully this won't piss too many people off.

First off - when you say it was working wonderfully - I would have to ask, for who? Although Lucky and I see eye-to-eye with the community most of the time - there are some things in which we have a different perspective.

That's because, although VideoSift is a community first, it's also an engine. An engine for creating good content that people want to view. By "people" I mean The vast holi poli of the Interwebs. I've mentioned it before, but 95% of our viewers are not Sifters.

I'm going to be frank and say that this is the dirty little secret of VideoSift. We rely on those people to pay the bills. We rely on this silent 95%, who don't have a voice here, but still come here every day to load the front page and see what's new and good as voted by the excellent curators here.

Promote is a good tool, but it concentrates the power of taste maker in a very small minority of all Sifters. When the silent majority comes to the front page and sees a bunch of promotes by 2 or 3 people taking up most of the front page - it devalues all of the other hard working content, much of it from new or less connected Sifters.

I'm not against promote. I just want it to be a tool that is balanced and used effectively. Especially to surface unusual or under-appreciated content.

TLDR: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one or the few - and I have been and will always be, your friend Jim Eric.

@dag what i'm not understanding is WHY the change? If i understood the reasoning behind it, it may be easier to get on board. I assume you have your reasons. As it is now it seems like you're trying to replace something that IMO was working wonderfully, and everyone seemed to like, with something inferior. I keep thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Shelley Lubben On Abuse In The Porn Industry - (Very NSFW)

Trancecoach says...

There is also something to be said for the significant ambiguity surrounding human sexuality and sexual expression whereby physical/emotional pleasure and pain are often interchangeable and submission and dominance are desired and sought out.

Certainly, full disclosure and informed consent would be necessary to ensure personal and professional liability. Alas, sex and porn remain in the perpetual shadows such that little attention is paid to this misunderstood and under-appreciated aspect of the human condition.

Awesomesauce! Daft Punk is such an under appreciated band IMO.

Geeze, how appreciated should they be? They've been nominated for 8 Grammys, won 2 of them. They've appeared in movies, tv shows, adverts. They composed the soundtrack for one of the most awesome movies ever, Tron Legacy, their albums have gone platinum and gold around the world... what more do you want?

Hold it, Teachers make $800 a week? - I had no idea it was so much.
Time to re-think that pay scale.....

@Sagemind
I hope you're joking, first of all. Why do I hope that? Because teachers should be paid abundantly more for the work we put in. It's a hard job. If you want more specific, detailed, cited reasons why it's a hard job, I hashed a lot of that out on an old post here.
If you're too busy to pine over all of that information though, I think Donald Quinn nailed it on the head with this:
"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job." ~Quinn
Finally, no, I've got 5 years of experience and make about $950 every 2 (that's two) weeks.

Wow, i hear that the roles are financially under appreciated, but surprised to hear it can be that low.

On behalf of all those (in any country) that actually listen with a curiosity and/or focused interest and quite appreciation, who also retain the information's teachers of all types provide, thank you (and all teachers) for putting in the time and effort to expand our horizons.
..and on behalf of those who screwed around too much and should have listened and appreciated the opportunity more when we were younger, who also later realized this wasted benefit.. dam it.
