Joe Biden Burns Out In His Corvette Stingray

WmGn says...

I've never kept track of TV hosts much, and haven't generally been interested in the 'driving cars with celebs' genre, but I was impressed by Leno's comments in the interview I posted above, his plea from the basic, ordinary "no big deal, but let's just be decent" camp in US politics.

Thanks for doing the leg work @WmGn.

Jon Stewart leaving The Daily Show.

newtboy says...

The better joke was...

Brian Williams needs a job, and there's an opening at Comedy Central, and Brian does have experience delivering fake news!

Jon isn't looking to be on TV daily anymore, or he would not be leaving by choice. Don't expect to see him as a regular TV host anywhere anytime soon. I'm guessing another movie might be in his future though.

There is an opening at NBC. Also, MSNBC has only 50,000 viewers and and could use all the help they can get their hands on.

Sad to think more people watch the Weather channel than MSNBC.

Jon should go to FOX but they only takes fired Liberals so I think Fox will be picking up Brian Williams in short order.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on genetically modified food

I assume you're referring to: http://www.upworthy.com/a-14-year-old-explains-food-labeling-in-language-even-condescending-tv-hosts-should-get-3

Ok...She explains what exactly? I'm pretty certain she doesn't even understand how genes work. She's a teen activist, not a scientist or doctor. I'm not saying that scientists and doctors are above reproach, but they at least have a basic understanding of the issues at hand with data to support their opinions.

I'm sure Monsanto is an evil corporation hellbent on profits at all costs, but the underlying concept that all GM food is bad for the planet and humans does not stand up to currently accepted scientific scrutiny.

Also, if this 14 year old girl and a documentary is the entirety of your "research", I'm not sure I should be wasting my time with you.

Its not mainly about the direct effects. Its about the indirect effects. What patents on those GMOs can do, how farmers are treated, what plants will do that you cant use without their special treatment, how powerful corporations will get if they have patents on food. Etc, etc, etc.

The French/German TV station Arte made a very good documentary about this. You should watch it. Its avilable on Youtube. Also theres a well known 14 year old girl (prolly 15 now) who explains it to people like you. Google her.

And yes, I didnt name her and the documentary for a reason. You should research for yourself. Its a little test. If you dont even research these easy to find things, youre not even remotely close to being objective and I wont waste my time on you.

Reverse Racism, Explained

9547bis says...

Not at all. I certainly did not say it doesn't count. I said it's different.
You said yourself you moved away from there. Minorities can't move away from being refused a loan, getting a better job, or abuses of power. They can't run away from TV hosts seemingly amazed that black people know how to use a fork. They have to deal with more than explicit manifestation of discrimination.
That does in no way diminishes what you had to live through.

To quote Louis CK:
"I'm not trying to say that if you're white you can't complain. I'm just saying that if you're black you get to complain more."

I also want to stress, in line with my previous remark on "labels", that the vocabulary we use to discuss these issues is often not good enough, or at least not precise enough. We want to use (or claim) the word 'racism' because it carries that emotional weight needed to make a statement, even though it obviously means different things to different people. Should we instead use qualifiers like "community discrimination", "systemic discrimination"? Probably. But it's not likely to happen. To me the important point is not how it's called, but that people who are not confronted with this reality understand what effects it has on those who have live it.

So, it seems you are saying that racism only counts if it's systemic and endemic, but not when it's only on an individual scale?

Open Letter to Ellen Degeneres: Don't Promote A Psychic

bareboards2 says...

Those folks who are criticizing the way this video was put together -- you have completely missed who it was made for. It was made for ELLEN DEGENERES. The person. The TV host. Not you, not the masses. She is trying to get Ellen to back off from giving air time.

I thought she did a great job in achieving her goal. I'm sure Ellen will be shown this vid.

She might even change her mind about having her on.

And isn't that a good thing? No TV exposure, this is a good thing, yes?
