Fail Forward : Deus Ex - Human Revolution

ChaosEngine says...

Agreed on most points. This one is pretty variable though.

For the next decade or two, prosthetics will continue to be sub-optimal replacements for human limbs and only used in cases of extreme trauma. I think these will continue to be the preserve of the rich (they pretty much already are in terms of 1st vs 3rd world).

Eventually, we will get to a point where prosthetics are actually better than the equivalent human limb. That's several decades away IMO (accurate control is doable, but getting to the point of have a prosthetic that relay sensory information is a Really Hard Problem).

At that point, I think we'll very quickly see adoption of prosthetics become mainstream, but it will still be geared towards the relatively wealthy (see present day adoption of smartphones).

But once you get to that point, even the most basic model prosthetic will outperform a human limb. I believe it's almost certain that these kinds of limbs will be "smart", i.e. instead of accepting simple commands from the brain of "contract tricep", "grip fingers", etc, you'll see an arm that draw a perfect circle. And they'll be stronger than a human arm almost by default (not picking up cars strong, support structures aren't there for that, but certainly stronger than an olympic athlete)

So either way, I still don't think we'll see a "prosthetic underclass".

And I could easily see a future where prosthetic limbs were more than just for rich people. Technology advances and becomes cheaper, cellphones used to be carried by rich assholes on Wallstreet, now every asshole has one. And not every prosthetic is going to turn you into Superman either, all a cybernetic leg needs to do is allow you to walk and run like a person with a normal leg, leaping tall buildings with a single bound is not a required feature. So most of those repressed cyber citizens are probably not sporting mil-spec hardware.

Strength Is A Skill You Acquire, It's Not Only About Size

ghark says...

Building up the bones and tendons through practice is pretty important as well, but yea, strength is definitely less important than most probably think. The main exception though i'd say is if you want to tricep press your opponent. You can hold someone much stronger than you with proper technique and enough endurance, but if you want to finish them with a tricep press you gotta have beastly triceps.

The Spider Who Couldn't Hide

ORLY?
I was talking about endoskeletons, I should have been more specific. Obviously, they have an exoskeleton like all arachnids and decapods. Spiders have a no way to push their limbs outward through muscle-skeleton action as they lack the equivalent of a triceps. But if it makes you happy to feel smarter... trolololo lololo lololo...

What on Earth are you talking about? If you're trolling, good job, ya got me.

Spiders have muscles, and a skeleton. Actually I kind of hope you're trolling... it would scare me to think people here are that uneducated.

Would he be "more than happy to" stick a needle in his arm to prove it's not full of synthol? I have a hard time believing he ingests 3 kilos of protein a day! Also, you'd think his forearms would be a bit more in line with the size of his biceps/triceps

Rand Paul's Co. Coordinator Stomps On MoveOn Member's Head

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

The point is that this is quite arguably NOT 'unjustified' and also quite arguably NOT 'violence'. The other video I linked above has (of course) been ignored. Watch it. The Sift choice above is the aftermath. What brought it on is here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiLeud-sxrM&feature=player_embedded

Hmm - not quite the innocent little rose, is she?

1. "Unjustified". The video plainly and clearly shows Ms. Kooksalot jumping right up at Paul's car window. No one knows who she is. No one knows what the heck she's trying to do. No one knows what the object in her hands might be. A bomb? A gun? When unidenified persons with unidentified objects and unknown intentions jump at political figures they get tackled and held down by security. She's lucky she didn't get tazed or pepper-sprayed or something more serious. If Ms. MoveOn.Stupid runs at political figures like that then a gentle nudge with a foot should be the least of her concerns.

2. "Violence". I've seen several different shots and angles of this so far and I'll just come out and say it. I've gotten harder 'kicks' from infants. The guy puts his foot on her upper tricep area and kind of gave her a bit of a push. Considering what she did, she got off way easy. If it was me then she'd have been in a full nelson eating asphalt until she was identified.

Yes, they slop in and tuck nicely between her biceps and triceps. Clavicle is amazing too -- and how bought that pectoralis! Do you you like the major or the minor? I fancy the minor, but then again, I'm more of a glute man, myself.
