Quake Champions Quakecon 2016 Gameplay

dannym3141 says...

Pandering more than slightly to the FPS puritan crowd. There doesn't seem to be any frilly bullshit going on - the type that drives oldschool FPS players crazy like calling in air strikes, perks, experience, head bob and realistic climbing motions, reality physics.

I mean i'm forever bitching about how most FPS these days make you feel like you're waist deep in treacle, nothing feels crisp and reactive. I complain that in the old days we didn't have crowd control effects where you'd take your hands off the mouse&keyboard for up to 5 seconds because of someone's second special attack or 'ultimate'. Or that one hero type will always beat another hero type - I was in top teams/national teams for both HLTFC and TF2, i know my stuff regarding class based team FPS, i'm not just talking shit/whining there.

They ram those statements home at the end - pure speed, pure skill, pure fps. I don't believe it for one second, but they clearly want people like me to be hyped over this.

DOOM-campaign-new trailer

Contextual kills usually mean that the engine is going to feel clunky and heavy, the wading-through-treacle effect. I really miss the days of fast, flowing FPS games that had huge individual skill ceilings involving all things like aim, dodging, rocket jumping, bunnyhopping and other clever manipulations of the engine.

That's what i think of when i get nostalgic for old FPS games like doom and quake and (later) half life 1.

Kucinich "The Bill Is A Sellout To Insurance Companies"

rougy says...

>> ^ghark:

50% of the American people who pay no federal taxes

Is that a reference to people on low incomes? I didn't quite catch the point he was trying to make (not being sarcastic btw).
Kucinich seems like a genuine fellow, the one good aspect from Fox's side is that they didn't interrupt him like you often see in these interviews, the questions were as biased as ever though.
Overall though, I can't believe how badly American's are being conned right now, i wonder when enough will wake up to what's happening.

Yeah, we are being conned. The worst part of it is that so many adults are sucking it up like treacle.

50% who don't pay taxes? That's news to me. I pay taxes every time I put gas in my car, or buy a six pack to drink. Federal taxes? Fuck, only the poor pay those.

There are a lot of people in scAmerica who make six figures, and they think they're rich. They are much closer to the poor, but try telling them that.

They pick on the weak and bow to the strong. They turn their heads away from all of our defense spending, and then yell about the domestic spending.

They love bombs and hate people. Some of them are mad because they can't buy a new car every year "like everybody else."

No, man, you're right. We've got big problems here.

The Americans

qualm says...

On the contrary; it's a bit of neccessary counter-point to the crass self-congratulatory tone of USA! USA! USA! that the ROTW is always being subjected to.

Even Sinclair himself was embarrassed by this piece. He couldn't bare to listen to it for all the inaccuracies it contained.

I will give it another listen, though; just to see if i can stomach the treacle. I doubt it--even though it's been many years.

eta: I don't hate "Americans". In my travels I've met hundreds of 'em. Almost invariably I've found Americans to be warm and friendly people. I'd say the same thing about the considerable number of Syrians I've met too, btw. Or Israelis, or...

WHOAH, 000.1 PERCENT? GOOD GRAVY, SON!

Hmm - yeah in retrospect this is probably an overstatement. The percentage of 'Theist attacking Athiest' videos on the Sift isn't that large.

there are intolerant athiests just as there are intolerant theists

Truer words were never spoken. What would be helpful to the Atheist presentation of their cause would be if they did not so stolidly pretend that they somehow are not 'intolerant' when they post treacle like this vid.

The vid claims to wonder, "why can't we all just celebrate the rich variety of shelves?" while at the same time it roundly condemns and lampoons his parents, his friends, and others for having chosen a particular set of shelves. It claims to want to celebrate diversity and freedom, while actively mocking others for having exercised it in ways the author personally did not agree with. It is hypocrisy most blatant, and utterly negates the supposed message the video is claiming to try and communicate.

i'm left wanting to enter brunette scientology girl's pink softness as she gently coaxes my white love treacle to Womanhood and womb.. her grinding pelvis shrieking in rawness.. jolts of being becoming inside her.. of degredation, of delight, and the fury..

Penn & Teller on Public University Speech Codes

8487 says...

Speech codes present a problem because they don't just restrict people's public speech, but the speech they use in their own groups. If I call my best female friend "petal" or "sugar" or "treacle", which I often do, somebody else might overhear and report me for violating the sexual harrassment speech code becuase they found it offensive, even if I wasn't talking to them. And what about performing a play with offensive language or controversial content? Good luck.

Seems to me that the colleges are simply trying to avoid controversy and bad press. By policing the vocabulary of their students they are creating a kind of Newspeak, where some ideas will eventually be unable to be discussed because the words will not exist any more.

Phage - The Virus that Cures

gluonium says...

oh how I pine for the days when you could actually learn something from NOVA and HORIZON. This is a prime example of how good science shows can be. this is about a billion times better than anything either of them offer today. no glitzy, insulting, dumbed down "HEY WATCH THIS ISNT IT SUPER FUCKING SEXYCOOL YEAAAAAAAA!!" bullshit. Just science, honest information and good journalism. The story is damn interesting in its own right, not because some absurdly straining, overdramatic, treacle infused voice over begs me to think it is.
