Recovering from Our Loss (Wtf Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

I haven't read through any of the posts.. So pardon me if this is something you have just read.. or if this is just totally whiny and selfish..

I am sure everybody is shocked and surprised and feeling frustrated.. I can't imagine how hard this is to dag and Lucky.. I am so happy to see all the sifted videos are there, and the star points!

But right now I think I just might have to take a break from here though.. I made it to the Top 10 REAL fast.. I mean, I made my account last April, and started trying to post in May. After I got my first sifted video, I was on a roll! Yes, I get addicted and obsessed and obviously VS became an addiction!

Just last week I was thrilled to have received 23 000 votes! There I was, on top10, thinking MAYBE one day I'd pass even one of the top 9 active shifters. And I know I had about 815 star points - for some reason it went down to 800 after the crash. But I wanted to climb up that list.. I wanted to be the second 'queen' to get a crown after Issy!

Right now I am torn.. should I just give up.. I still have my star points, but I will never get the votes back. I am not even one of the popular/old timer/fun sifters who'd have lots of people go through their sifts and upvote everything.. All I managed to do today, selfish me, was to upvote all my owm videos, to learn that it was then done automatically and I just wasted an afternoon..

Yes, I admit, I love being competitive, and popular and #1.. I don't want to go through another long battle to get back to the top10. I know everybody feels the same way.. it is a long run to get the votes back..

But why do I want to be in thew Top10? Because I love this place.. and I am afraid that if I am not in the top, nobody will pay any attention to me. And if nobody pays any attention to me, I won't get anything sifted. And I am better being #1 online than in RL..

OH btw, this pots should have those <drunk> </drunk> tags (I have tomorrow off..)

Just saying.. Yes, I am whining, add me to the whiny poster list! Mostly I am saying.. I am not sure if I am strong enough to stay and fight my way through to the top again. I do love this place! I hope everybody else is stronger than me, keep on sifting, posting and upvoting.

I will probably be back tomorrow, trying to figure a way to get every single video I post sifted! I made my way up once, I can do it again! We all are starting from scratch! I am sooooo happy that all the sifted videos are there too!!!!

Thank you all, VS people! Keep sifting and voting and hopefully we all feel better tomorrow!

What motivates you to submit a video to VideoSift? (Sift Talk Post)

joedirt says...

lol..

Some of us submit good videos that are entertaining or of some quality or at least unique and interesting.

Other people just submit the same stuff ad naseaum. (See: GI JOE PSA from years ago) (See: endless parade of kitty doggie videos)

Some people try to be the first to submit regular type series that are the kind on the top10 of digg and most of the internet (See: Zero Punctuation) (see: chad vader)

Some people just like their own unique tastes to be posted everywhere, this is usually certain types of music videos.

A lot of the top people just see a video from whatever means the use to aggregate videos and recognize those destined for top honors and submit those.

A better question is where do people cull videos from the internet from. Most people do not watch 1000s of newly submitted 10 view YT videos, so there is already some major sifting before they get submitted to aggregation sifting/voting sites like this one.

Occasionally, people will just try to fill out a niche that is otherwise ignored on the internet, like cooking videos or horrorshow videos back when a contest is run or halloween time. This site is unique in that there are not really hard core channel fans, like a video gaming forum might see only those videos, etc.

Anyways, this site started with a certain relatively small group of users and the types of videos that others like were reinforced, so people that enjoyed that blend of videos came back because it was useful for delivering certain content. Eventually those that value the content make an account and add their own, usually somewhat similar tastes, or if it was not it would be ignored.

This site is really not that much different than the digg top10 list, but it does have to opportunity to provide more unique finds. There used to be great japanese and korean content, which has mostly died down, partly because of the massive YT purges of jtv content. Same goes with adultswim content that was once submitted, but pretty much useless now because those videos will soon be dead, so copyright holders can actually stifle the distrubution to larger audiences.. dee doo doo

For instance, for awhile it was all Colbert stuff, but that died off either as a fad, or the YT embed being killed by copyright holders, and then the annoying US only ability to play Comedy Central embeds. So much content is ignored from corporations trying to control their content.

I think in general the answer you are looking for from at least this collective of users if providing a place to be able to quickly and effortlessly watch good videos and avoid a bunch of useless crap. In some ways I think people submit videos to return the favor and keep the house of cards afloat, so there is a communal aspect to it, and many of the videos are a you-have-to-see-this. For the record, this site is not that much different than a fark submission, or at least the early days on this site had that appeal, but fark is a also almost a decade past jumping the shark.

You should visit GodTube as another concept of the secluded pockets of the internets where it used to be fun sport to submit some classic godtube content.

Personal Top Channels Has Changed (Books Talk Post)

> What? No one has "Books" in their top ten? How odd.

bear in mind, that has as much to do with what's available, as it does with our individual viewing habits. so, channels like grindhouse, books, cult, and (by its very nature) obscure, probably won't wind up on many top10s.

ps. speaking of books, anyone else enjoyed Cyrano? /crickets

James Bond: Quantum Of Solace game trailer

dannym3141 says...

Kronos i agree so whole heartedly, Craig brings Bond back to life for me. Daniel Craig is the best bond ever imo. I don't have some top10 list, but Craig has totally reinvented and reinfused Bond. For the first time ever, i'm really excited about a new Bond film.

The grittyness is a big factor i think. More realistic fights and actual injuries are great. The shitty sarcasm and poor gags just don't work anymore, and i think the Bourne films (i'm a huge fan) really gave us something new to look for in action films - less explosions, less 'bullet-proof-heroism' in favour of the new gritty style.

Overall Top Channels
The highest ranked channels overall as determined by votes cast by all members.

Fine. Where's complete rankings? Or, at least, how can I know how many votes and videos my channel has?

I also miss many collective-related functions, such as top collective posters, top collective videos, and so on (maybe there are but I couldn't find'em).

Moreover, in the "Channels Listed Alphabetically" the basic channels are missing. So, if one of them isn't listed in the top10, it isn't listed anywere in the channel page...

Finally, a grievous1 question: Viral VS Commercial. I find many many commercial videos who aren't viral by any means. And I *do* mean many.
I guess more than half of the viral channel are actually commercials, due to the fact that the commercial channel wasn't there.
Should I simply add the *commercial channel, or am I also supposed to remove the viral one where I feel it's inappropriate? Can we have a simpler way of modifying channels? Either similar to the tags or playlists one, or anyway better than *nochannel *one *two *three *four *five invocation, that when channels are all-five is really a pain in the ass.

Anyway, gg, I'm really linking VS3

PS: so, looks like I was the only one besides JR to use "bigger" function, weren't we?

PS: rotfl@Goofball_Jones

1 i don't actually know what grievous mean, that was a nice-sounding word and I decided to use it
