Red Letter Media Talks About Prometheus on DVD

gwiz665 says...

There was a clear problem in that you didn't care for any characters. The most likable character was the homicidal robot, which is a failure in my book. In the original Aliens, you grow to like Ripley and you like the camaraderie going on in the beginning of the movie, even if most of them were fucktards. The marines in Aliens were also likeable, even if you sorta recognized them as the dickheads from high school - some of them were our hook into the world, ripley, hicks, hudson all good. Even in alien 3, you still ahve ripley to hang on to, even if it's a desolate despairing film. Alien 4 you have Winona Ryder-robot to like, where ripley is more.. well, alienated.

in prometheus, I liked the Captain Janek and in a twisted way Fassbender-bot, because he was played well. All their motivations didn't make all that much sense though. I hated Holloway, hated Shaw, hated Vickers, fucking hated all of them. Gah, it's so irritating, because the universe of it is so interesting! aaargh.

I think there could have been a much better movie with the same source material, I think the concept could be really cool, but it's beyond a simple reedit repair job. The characters need a total rewrite to not be selfish, unlikable fucktards. There needs to be a lot more explanation and more time spent soaking in each of the more important subject matters and not this jump from one scene to the next with no flow and no reason.

I don't know. It seemed like it needed more "epicness". Like you said (or, as I understood you), more time for the viewer to parse the implications of the much bigger picture before they throw up a scene of some slimesnake tickling someone's uvula. Maybe a scene where they just stand around and go "OMFG! We've discovered the greatest discovery in the history of mankind! Oh, shit! That's a fucking alien structure! The first one ever discovered!! This is fucking amazing!!" They just didn't seem too impressed with anything. And I wish they had left the Alien stuff out completely. They didn't need it. There's just a bigger, better story here than the one we've already seen again and yet again in the sequels. Most of the characters did have that ST:TOS red-shirt aura about them, and really served little purpose outside of biting it in creative ways. Could have been better, but I still dug it, and I think the sequel(s) has a chance to be great. I just hope the Engineer homeworld isn't overrun with alien queens or some dumb shit like that.

Justin Bieber Throws Up on Stage in Arizona/AZ.

Xaielao says...

Knew he was a fake. You know, in the late 80's we had a massive conspiracy in the music world as Milli Vanilli were discovered as having faked their performances, and that they didn't even record their own songs. It caused such an uproar in the music industry at the time that it was on the news for months, the duo was stripped of their awards, shamed by the masses and one of the performers committed suicide.

Little did we know that a decade or two later it would be not only with this sort of fraud be common place, it would be the defacto standard in Pop music (and others.. I highly suspect Country because most of those male singers sound identical, they don't write their own songs and many visibly do not play their guitar even though you hear it being played when they are on stage). Big acts like Bieber are made famous because of their charisma and their sex appeal... and yes, that was the intent for his teenybopper audience. Their flat or unpolished singing voices mean nothing when a computer program just fixes their voice digitally and then they go on stage and just pretend to sing. The handful of times they actually sing themselves the performances are horrid.

Justin Bieber can sing a little blurb on a talk show or over the internet and sound half decent.. millions worth of singing lessons will do that. But when it comes right down to it he's the same no talent hack as the vast majority of the 'pop' world. What is even more funny is that the vast majority of websites, news channels, etc that report this don't even MENTION the fact that he somehow keeps 'singing' even while throwing up. The sad fact is most people have either accepted or become blinded to the fact that Mili Vanili were only precursors to a new industry standard.

In the end I feel bad the most for our children. They are growing up with this fake garbage and don't even know it. It's all so focus tested and programmed in that each new hit is the same and they don't care. It's why with my daughter I try and teach her to be eclectic with her musical tastes. I really don't care if I don't like what she listens to, just so long as she know how fake pop music is these days. Thankfully she's got her dads musical genes.

While I heartily approve of violence against the Footy Show hosts, guests and/or audience, I'm gonna have to agree with Newman here (one sec.... gotta throw up.... ugh)

Anyway, did anyone watch the TKD at the olympics? It was utterly boring to watch. I've nothing against it as a martial art, but as a spectator sport it's really dull.

The Great Porn Experiment: TEDxGlasgow, Gary Wilson

spoco2 says...

@gwiz665 My point isn't that porn is bad and people who view it should feel bad about it. I really do have no issue with respectful porn in moderation. My issue is that if you do a search for porn these days, or go to youporn or anything like that, then 90% of the top stuff is just so derogatory towards women. Women gagging on dicks to the point of almost throwing up, women having their mouths pulled open, women drinking cum from glasses, bukakke, being held down and viscously rammed... this seems to be the norm now. The norm seems to be to treat women as objects. And damn those women better have big fake tits, a bald vagina, and be fine with ass to mouth.

My issue is that the porn is 'just there' now, and for single people, it'll get used a lot, and it DOES start shaping their tastes and expectations in regards to sex. The fact that sites like this even have a need to exist, shows that porn is shaping people's attitudes towards sex and women far more than it should be.

My wife and I do actually still occasionally watch porn together, carefully selected stuff that is not degrading, but just shows couples seemingly actually enjoying sex together. And as an occasional thing, it's great.

Trying to teach kids that porn is just movies and not real is just the same as movies really. Until their old enough to really process the difference between reality and make believe, until they get those critical thinking abilities, it doesn't matter how much you tell them that something isn't real. If they see it, it will affect them. So yes, I will definitely be teaching them about how the stuff in porn should never be looked on as a way to treat women (or be treated for my daughter), but I don't want them even seeing it until they're much older and can actually process it properly anyway.

Over sexualisation of our kids is a huge problem now. 3 year old girls being given high heel shoes for birthdays (as our daughter was, and we've promptly put them deep in the dress up basket), having 'role models' like Katy 'spit' Perry informing their self view. It's shit, and is not letting kids just be kids. And too many parents we see just go along with it. Let their 3 year olds dance and sing along to music videos showing women being treated as sex objects, and little more.

What this talk shows is that there is a physical effect of watching porn as much as people do now. You can put it down to weak will power, but when it's there at a click, whenever you want it, it's a problem. And it really is changing how people have sex. I've watched numerous talks where porn tropes like cumming on the woman's face, or ass to mouth, or any number of those things that only really make sense in the world of porn, are becoming things which men and women think are expected of them, or are the 'normal' way to have sex. That's a problem, because it's taking the focus away from two people getting hugely turned on and having great sex and being more like sex that looks good when being watched by someone else.
