This is incredible footage! That said I'm torn between my passion for surfing and the fact that I would hate to see what that salt spray probably did to, what appears to be a DJI Inspire from the shadow.

Not to mention my nervousness of the drone going in vs my nervousness at some of those guys/girls going over the falls.

Yeah, I saw that. I really don't know how I feel about it.
On one hand, yeah, it's ridiculous and therefore cool, but there's a part of me that likes the idea of surfing being human powered and sees this kind of thing as an invasion. I feel the same way about snow mobiles and jet skis.

It's completely irrational, I know. I think I'm just turning into a grumpy old man

I'm getting tired of people sending out hit sharks in Professional Surf Competitions. Just because you can't come in first doesn't mean you have to hire a hit shark.

Seriously, I'm glad he's okay. Takes some big floatable balls to surf in shark waters.

Amazing Fog Waterfall

artician says...

There is a similar phenomenon in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Around dusk every day in the springtime, a 'tidal wave' of fog flowing eastward from the coast would hit the western foothills of the peninsula, and arc gracefully over the 280 freeway like a massive, slow-motion crash of water. From 20 miles away it looks like a tidal wave, capable of wiping out all of silicon valley, is just frozen in place at the edge of civilization. Up close, it's like surfing your car through the barrel of an enormous wave.
It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life, and it happens almost daily there.

Unlike a surfboard, I fail to see where this captain had any input whatsoever over this. You know, other than floating around until the wave happened. If he had the engine power to maneuver, why bother surfing? Unless he's just trying to capsize, sell the boat to the insurance company...

Surfing - Here's what it feels like to get caught inside.

ChaosEngine says...

Of all the activities I've tried, surfing is the one that just breaks me. I suck at it so much. I would love to be able to surf well, but I don't have the time to dedicate to it.

For me, the worst part of that is not the washing machine. Being mashed and held down is unpleasant, but I'm comfortable enough underwater that it doesn't really bother me.

But it's just so disheartening.

You expend all this energy paddling, and then you get thrown back again and again, and just when you think there's a gap... boom... rogue wave knocks you back again!

Then you finally get out the back and two things will happen:
first the sweetest wave ever comes through just as you're catching your breath and you either skip it from exhaustion or fail to catch it

and then.... nothing for ages. The epic swell that was pounding the crap out of you? Nowhere to be seen and the ocean is flat as.

damn ocean hates me
