The Great Refrigerator Magnet Giveaway! (Sift Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

There is still time for more people to enter, I think we have 7 people taking part atm But just though I'd let you know in advance:

In case I happen to win a Grand Prize, I'd love to choose a T-shirt instead of a magnet. The magnets are super cool, but that squirrel just creeps me out, especially if his nuts end up all over the place! And I am not sure if I want any zombie parts near my food.

Sportsmanship - John Landy stops to help fallen Ron Clarke

Yogi says...

Running has produced a lot of really good people over the decades. I wish that were more celebrated rather than how hard or vicious someone can destroy their opponent.

People such as Derartu Tulu who twice tried to help Paula Radcliffe (3 time NY Marathon Winner) who was falling behind the leader pack. Eventually Paula told the older Tulu to go on without her, so she caught up with the head pack and won the New York Marathon herself and met Paula at the finish.

Or Emil Zatopek who gave one of his Gold Medals to Ron Clarke (the guy in the video) who was known as a choke artist for never winning gold in the commonwealth games and getting beaten by runners not as good as he was. Emil gave him a package when Ron visited him in Prague and told him "You've deserve it" and when Ron got home he found it was one of Emil's Gold Medals.

There are tons of these super cool stories of runner sportsmanship because running brings people together...go for a run.

Fill your honey pot with knowledge- Bees+PBS=Winning

My mum got a bee hive recently. She's been taking classes and reading around it for the last year and its quite rare for her not to lecture the rest of us on new Bee information around every meal. Not that I mind, they are fascinating creatures. Their society, biology, importance in the ecosystem is all super cool. and kinda mindbending.

Interestingly, if you move a Hive by just a few metres after the Bees are established it confuses the FUCK out of them. You have to move them more than 10 miles away before they stop being confuzzled.

Wow. Are you super cool or what?

Upvote you for wanting to just have fun.

I thought about it for a while, and removed it because the video doesn't mean anything to me. It's just a dumb video I found and submitted it to notch up my star points and nothing more. The video also represents a catalyst for causing a ton of controversy on the sift, and I don't really want to be caught up in it.

Someone else can sift it if they'd like.

I haven't even seen it! I have no opinion!!!!!

Mysteries are compounding... it isn't on my front page. Weird.

Well, as long as everyone else can see it.... well, I hope everyone can see it!

It really is a super cool vid. I'm shocked it didn't even get promoted....

Well, crap.

I thought that I could get your insane football parkour back on the front page. But I guess since it has been pqueued, it won't go there.

I wasted a power point, dagnab it. Learned a lesson though. Won't do that again....

It is on the front page. I saw it there and that is why I posted on your profile before I saw that you had posted on mine. Oh well. Thanks either way. *tips hat*

The production budget was reportedly just US$15,000.

So I guess it's become super-cool to say your production budget was tiny now - but that number is just dumb.

You can't make this film on $15,000 actual dollars. How much time went into it? What's that time worth at even half industry rates (for things like editing, CGI, sound work)? Heck, what's it worth at minimum wage? The only way you get the number that low is you get people to delay their pay (ie. you have a percentage later), and you creatively exclude other expenses so that your budget looks smaller coming in (I already had the laptop and camera! We were going on holiday to Mexico anyways!).

I'm happy to hear a film is low budget - low budget movies that make it to me are usually pretty good (thinking of Primer here). But this ridiculous "how long can we go" contest is silly and disingenuous.

If I build a house by chewing down trees and shaping them with my teeth, I don't have a free house - literal dollars parted with aren't the only costs that exist. Similarly, these people don't have a $15,000 movie - and I suspect that they literally spent more than $15,000 as well.
