If your New Year's resolution is to quit smoking...

enoch says...

coffee and cigarettes are my last vice, and i ain't fucking giving them up!

how is that people feel perfectly at ease to just walk up to me,a total stranger, and offer health advice?

"you know those will kill ya,you should quit"

thanks captain obvious.

so i always offer them options, people LOVE options.

cigarettes or heroin i ask them.

which always stops them in their tracks and totally bewilders them, and gives me the silent giggles.

which of course they suggest neither, but i tell them i kicked my heroin addiction,my coke addiction,my painkiller addiction,my sex addiction,my porn addiction,i have plenty of experience with addictions.

"so why not lose the cigarette addiction?"

because i don't want to i reply,as i sip my coffee and take a drag of my cigarette.

and they got nothing, and they know it.

smokers realize that smoking is bad for them.that it will facilitate future health issues and most likely result in an early death.

so when you walk up to a stranger smoking and preach the dangers of smoking.you are not revealing some secret truth that they are not already fully aware of,your intentions may be good and your heart coming from the right place, but it is extremely condescending and patronizing.

and the dangers of second hand smoke have been proven to be totally over-blown.it is just rude of a smoker to be forcing anyone to be in the same air space while they enjoy their addiction.

i do not smoke in someone elses car,or in their home.i don't blow smoke in peoples faces.i go out to smoke on the patio.i try to be respectful.

and when you look at the statistics, fewer and fewer young people are picking up the habit of smoking.for all the tobacco companies whining and crying,it appears education is the very simply answer to address a very nasty habit, and even worse addiction.

so to all you well-inentioned do-gooders out there.please do not waste your time or energy pointing out the obvious to people like me.who will be turning 50 in a few months.save that energy for the young people.

coffee and cigarettes are my last addictions.think i will keep them.

hmmmm....coffee sounds good right about now.

Trump-Funded Operative CAUGHT Soliciting Illegal Acts?

newtboy says...

Thanks.
I'm just glad the left has finally figured out that when a stranger shows up asking them to do something illegal they need to turn on the cameras, play along, then bust them on it.
I hope she gets charged with attempting to incite a riot.

Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe

dannym3141 says...

I've not seen any real proof that having a royal family living in the palace is a deal-breaker for tourists. And so I've also never seen any proof that they provide a net gain to the country because they get fecking millions in subsidies, security, and all the land and positions they own 'by divine right'.

They royalty are public servants - you would never catch me bowing to any of them, or treating them any differently than i would a stranger - respectfully, as equals.

As far as i'm concerned, they've got the luckiest life in the world by birthright, which goes completely against everything i believe in. So they better do a lot of charity work and never complain about it - which to be fair they have done, but only because they know they're on thin ice and will be summarily dethroned if they act up. Especially at a time like this.

the monarchy, as powerless as they really are, contribute millions (billions?) of pounds to their country from tourism alone.

Self Defense?

newtboy says...

Ahhh, that's what you meant.
I submit that because you might not fear in one situation doesn't mean that, for someone less able or more cautious, fear isn't justified.
There are many legal justifications for homicide. Self defense is the most often used, but is far from the only justification. Enforcing a proper citizen's arrest for instance may use any force needed, including deadly force, to affect the arrest...but you better be ready to prove it was needed.

In this case, he used force to effectively stop a continuous attack and stopped the instant the attack was neutralized, and not even deadly force. I don't see why that's wrong, one hit for two, he just hits harder, a chance you take when hitting much larger strangers, no? Had she scratched his eye with her next attack, she may have ended his career.

Granted, with no audio, it's one person's word against another's as to what may have been said, but didn't she claim he attacked her unprovoked before the video surfaced? That's why I used the qualifier "allegedly", I can't tell for myself. It's pretty clear to me that she was instigating while he was walking away, though.

@newtboy I have tried to explain that I like living at home, not in prison, so yes, in a situation in which I did not genuinely fear grave bodily harm I would try to avoid a disproportionately violent response. That's what the law requires. It would not matter whether the irritant in question were male, female, or indeterminate.

No one is ever "legally justified in killing" someone else, unless perhaps they are an executioner. Deadly force in self defense is sometimes allowed in order to stop an attack, but must cease as soon as the threat is neutralized.

Racist taunts have been alleged, so have homophobic taunts on the other side. It's hard to say if anyone is telling the truth.

Insane woman assaults legal e-bike rider on public path

newtboy says...

Here's a good example of my point, being that there are reason's why you shouldn't get overly aggressive with strangers, you never know who they really are.....

Insane woman assaults legal e-bike rider on public path

newtboy says...

I totally agree with you, but I also see that people get away with going way too far, daily.
I just wish people would consider that others may not think they're harmless and may respond disproportionately before violently attacking strangers and playing cop and court on a pathway, because it could easily have gone very wrong for her.

I'm pretty much with you on this one dude. But I think arguing kidnapping & lethal force is a bit of a stretch even in (most of) the USA.

I realise you aren't advocating for that anyway, but I suspect in most jurisdictions lethal force here (or even just a good kicking) would have been a trip to jail.

"Spirit of the law" is very significant in most courts. While this could be defined as kidnapping on the most narrowly technical of terms, it would take a hell of a lawyer to make it stick don't you think?

It definitely wouldn't fly in the UK at any rate.

Adam Ruins Everything - Why the Internet is Good for Society

newtboy says...

Um, do you realize that you are advocating retreating into a safe space bubble where ideas that don't reinforce your preconceptions are simply ignored rather than considered? I feel like that's becoming a significant factor in the downfall of civility and reason.

I would ask you...ARE you boring? If not, you must admit that the preconception you expect from others is in error, and I hope you might think it through to see your preconceptions about them may be erroneous as well.
I still talk to strangers all the time, because I already know what people in my bubble think....just hearing my own thoughts and assumptions repeated with no critical analysis...now THAT'S boring.

Fucking finally. I am so tired of obnoxious wankers whinging about smart phones disconnecting us from each other.

Know what I did on public transport prior to having a smartphone? I read a book and listened to my Walkman (yes, I'm that old).

I didn't talk to strangers on a bus, because most people are fucking boring. And they undoubtedly think I'm boring too.

We were previously forced to talk to neighbours, colleagues, etc because they were the only people we came in contact with, but these days instead of communicating with people who share our physical space, we communicate with people who share our interests.

I'm quite proud of one of the creepiest things I've ever said. Best heard without context, but to be fair the context doesn't really improve things.

I was in the middle of hugging a male stranger from behind, and I said "Don't turn around, just enjoy it".
