BBC Proms Late Night tribute to David Bowie

noims says...

Well that's a couple of hours of my life I won't regret.

A few very interesting arrangements, not all of which I enjoyed, but it was a nice mellow experience.

Just because I took notes myself (some of which may be wrong), here's what they played:

4:58 Warszawa - (Instrumental)
8:55 Station to Station - Neil Hannon & Amanda Palmer
16:04 The Man Who Sold The World - Conor O'Brien
22:24 This Is Not America - Neil Hannon & Elf Kid
27:44 Life On Mars? - Mark Almond
33:22 Lady Grinning Soul - Anna Calvi & Jherek Bischoff
40:21 Ashes To Ashes - Paul Buchannan
46:14 Fame - Laura Mvula
50:54 (I didn't recognise this one) - (Instrumental)
53:52 Girl Loves Me - Laura Mvula & Paul Buchannan
58:32 I can't give everything away - Paul Buchannan
1:05:31 Blackstar - Amanda Palmer & Anna Calvi
1:16:01 Heroes- Amanda Palmer, Anna Calvi & Jherek Bischoff
1:21:13 Always Crashing In The Same Car - Phillipe Jaroussky
1:27:39 Starman - Mark Almond
1:33:00 Rebel Rebel - (Instrumental)
1:35:03 Valentine's Day - John Cale
1:40:49 Sorrow - John Cale & Anna Calvi
1:46:47 Space Oddity - John Cale & House Gospel Choir
1:57:09 After All - (Various artists) + House Gospel Choir
2:02:45 Lets Dance - (Proms audience)

Comedian Paul F. Tompkins on Political Correctness

MilkmanDan says...

It kind of is. Incarceration, torture, and execution are not on the table, true (although in the UK it sounds like incarceration for making remarks deemed to be "offensive" due to racism, discrimination, etc. isn't ALL that far-fetched).

You can think that Carr's joke was lazy and unfunny -- that's fine. Personally I like it, and find it at least mildly clever in that he said it was trying to come up with the "shortest" joke possible. But anyway, some/many people in the UK agreed with you and made complaints to the station. The station/broadcaster came back with that statement you linked to, in my opinion mainly just to cover their own asses in the event of Government intervention (which I am led to believe by several news stories was / still is a real possibility).

The idea that there is any possibility of the Government intervention being required to punish Carr or the station -- purely because some people took offense to some nonsense that he said -- is what I find to be ridiculous.

"Wild is the Wind" by David Bowie

ulysses1904 says...

I saw him on that 1978 tour in Houston. I was actually hoping for a repeat of his Station to Station tour from 1976, his show at Madison Square was amazing that year. But he changed it up, played songs from Low and Heroes with a large ensemble of musicians, including Adrian Belew. He always put on a good show.

I was going to toss out some time around his "Low" tour, based on his dress. At least, this is virtually identical to when I saw him perform. I was kind of let down at first, having expected/anticipated a Ziggy Stardust kind of show.

But only at first...he quickly convinced me that appearance means little with Bowie.

Un Chien Andalou - Surrealist Film

ulysses1904 says...

Never heard of this film until I was at Bowie's Madison Square Garden "Station to Station" concert in 1976. This film was the opening act. You can imagine the sound of 18,000 people reacting to the eyeball scene, took everyone off-guard. I kept cringing for the rest of the film, thinking we were going to see more of the same weirdness. Nobody knew what the film was, when the guy was looking at the ants in his hand people were wondering if it was Bowie in the film, that he had made the film himself for the tour. Definitely confused everyone. The band started playing "Station to Station" as the movie screen was rolling up afterwards, went on to be an incredible show.

Since I saw this the first time in theaters when I was a kid, This was my first thought - I mean, the death Star II was pretty big - It couldn't all burn up in the outer atmosphere. Some of it had to land on nearby systems right!?

Actually the biggest problem is that they destroyed the power regulator for the station. The station uses a Type II artificial singularity device to power the core and the laser array (the "Death Ray").

The biggest problem is the power overload blew up the station which means the containment system for the power system failed. The artificial singularity slowly, due to gravity, fell to the core of the planet and devoured it. Later on it devoured the star for the system and then eventually the system.

But, don't worry Admiral Anthony "Ackbar" Hayward said it's all taken care of and he said at a press conference a month later that quote, "We'reeeeddbbb ssoohhoorrrrhhheeeee.".

Napolitano Suggests Porno-Scanners For Ships, Trains & Buses

blankfist says...

>> ^entr0py:

But, she didn't actually suggest body scanners for trains, ships and buses, did she?

You're right. She did not. But if she did install the backscatter x-rays and 'gate rape' pat down procedures at bus stations, train stations and ship ports, would it really change your opinion of her in the slightest? And why are Democrats now laying down and claiming "this is the world we live in" instead of protesting this for the civil liberties violation that it is?

You are welcome mate. I'm not surprised you don't know Runnymede; even the fare collectors don't know where it is.

Thanks. I lived lived in TO for three years and I recognized the sounds of the subway right away but when the pigeon was about to get off I'm thinking what stop is that announcer saying. It's funny in all that time I didn't know that stop existed. I guess people get into their comfortable patterns of their daily lives and the neighborhoods they live in. Cheers.

David Bowie's teeth over the years: close-up dental analysis

Trancecoach says...

Looking Major Tom in the molars.

Could the artistry of David Bowie be tied somehow to the appearance of his teeth? That appears to be the subtext of the video. I find it interesting that Rolling Stone’s Alan Light feels that after Bowie cranked out not only Ziggy Stardust, but Hunky Dory, Low, Station to Station, etc., the one thing “holding him back” was a self-consciousness about his teeth. Hmm, by that logic…did cosmetic surgery beget Tin Machine?!

Frank Zappa - Greatest Drum Solo

ulysses1904 says...

Good stuff. Usually drum solos are the very definition of boring but some of them stand out. The best one I ever heard was David Bowie's drummer Dennis Davis, on his 1976 Station to Station tour. They played at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island and the show was broadcast on the King Biscuit Flour Hour. Dennis has a drum solo during "Panic in Detroit" and I have never heard any musician so connected with his instrument as Dennis is on that solo.
