Things are ugly enough as it is.

It used to be that if spooks needed your passphrase, they'd sneak in an put a bug in your keyboard... but if they have the private keys to sign replacement firmware for your keyboard then they don't even need to sneak in any more (actually I'm not sure my keyboard even needs signed firmware).

I think someone cleverer than me could probably contrive a defense against that particular attack, but I'm not in the habit of checking the integrity of my peripherals, or working in a tempest shielded room.

I think strong crypto is probably safe, but in the real world the crypto is hardly ever the weakest link.

I'm hoping it really is mainly procedural means the NSA have. Already before this, I've been operating under the assumption anything I haven't personally encrypted using keys controlled only by me is not secure. Used to be I only went the whole mile when I felt it was necessary, now I'm starting to move as much of my net presence into the dark as I can, out of principle more than any immediate need. But if strong crypto is compromised, as some now worry... Things get ugly.

the thrill of the hunt. It's fun, not only does it provide food, it's exhilarating. Stalking the target is the most fun style of hunting large game, as you have to stay down wind, stay quiet, and get close enough for a good shot.

it is "getting off" so to speak. The adrenaline is pumping, it even has a name you can google "Buck Fever" every hunter gets it. "Buck Fever" causes a lot of missed shots, the heart races, adrenaline pumps and you wind up missing or spooking them. But hunting is a ton of fun, if it weren't my kids wouldn't even be interested in it either. Not only does it provide cheap and plentiful food for family, which otherwise I would probably need food stamps to afford meat for family of 4, it's also fun, entertaining, and constantly trying to get better.

Similar to how fps gamers get addicted to keep getting better scores and "kill streaks" same for hunting, I hate missing a flock of quail, I love when we flush a flock of 5 or 6 quail and we can get them all, which rarely happens, usually 2 or 3 are dropped until next flush.

if hunting was not fun, there would be no point, just buy from store...
but it serves a purpose and it's fun as hell.

If an animal is killed humanely for the sole purpose of providing food, I am not opposed to hunting. It's when I hear about people "getting off" on the kill that makes me question their motives. What is so thrilling about causing an animal to experience pain and ending a life?

CIA Admits It Was Behind Iran's Coup in 1953

radx says...

The point is that this FOIA request produced the first official document to confirm the involvement of Allen Dulles and his spooks. The mere fact that the Brits and the Yankees were responsible for the coup is, of course, not news to anyone, or at least it shouldn't be.

If they presented some documents about, say, the installment of Suharto in Indonesia, it wouldn't be news either. But it would still be of interest to me.

"CIA releases information"......Oxymoronic??! Haven't peeps with the ability to dissect newsspeak and "official statements" known that the CIA orchestrated the Iranian coup for over 30 years?

Microsoft put people in quite a pickle when they admitted that all their products, Windows first and foremost, have easier backdoor access than the Kardashians.

Let's say a government agency is employing Windows as their standard OS. Let's say they are legally bound to protect the data they work with, within reasonable limits. Now, if said OS is widely known to be inherently insecure, would that make all of them liable for negligence if they renew any licenses, much less acquire new ones?

Anyways, still looking for an English news source for a specific talk at the Black Hat conference in Vegas. Matthew Cole, a fella working for NBC News, outlined how all the CIA spooks involved in the kidnapping of Abu Omar in Italy were identified by... telephone metadata.

Even the professionals cannot beat the fucking machine, so what does that say about the ordinary citizen. Those blokes were caught because they messed up, but still...

You're becoming a better news source than CNN, MSNBC and Fox News rolled together. I love how all the big corporations are trying to distance themselves from all these leaks. I think Microsoft is going to be especially damaged since that whole Xbox One fiasco coupled with them willingly giving NSA access to their operating systems and lying about it. Good. Let them all fall.

11-Year-Old Girl Speaks Out About Forced Marriage

radx says...

Has anyone checked the source of the translation, MEMRI?

Never heard of 'em, but Wiki has some basic info that makes it appear to me like a bloody propaganda outfit. Look at the names listed: Michael Hayden (NSA/CIA), Paul Bremmer and John Bolten (Bush's warmongers), Ehud Barak (fmr. Israeli Minister of Defence) and running the show is Yigal Carmon, who is listed as an Israeli spook.

Call me cynical, but I smell a touch of manipulative propaganda. Not saying the story is false, just that it might have been picked, pushed and hyped for a political purpose other than the suffering of Yemeni girls/women.

Scathing Critique of Reaction to Trayvon Martin Verdict

Porksandwich says...

Exactly, as a lot of us were arguing about this last year after it happened. As long as you are the only one alive when it's over...you can pretty much do anything you like then whip out the gun as soon as it's not going your way. Just don't leave any eye witnesses.

If anyone had seen that whole series of events play out involving Zimmerman's side...I don't think a reasonable person could say he acted with any sort of common sense for a common citizen who saw no crime taking place.

Also it's pretty damn threatening IMO to have people follow you into dark alleys/cross overs, etc after you saw them driving by and/or parked on the street moments before. Hell I've seen women in broad daylight get spooked when I walk to my car at the end of the parking lot and just happen to be in the same row as them. They could gun me down....since I was clearly following them to grab them. Now add in darkness, unfamiliar setting, and some strange guy following you.

I would be highly interested in what that jury was told to include and exclude from their decision. Because I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to make my change my mind that Trayvon had every right to feel threatened and should have been protected first and foremost under the law that Zimmerman used to kill him.

What a seriously twisted premise for a screenplay-Ex-Spook who with incriminating info and the onset of Alzheimer, barricades himself in his home and with dutiful attention to protocol for fear of compromise, drives his caregiver insane.

Gotta check this one out...

Airbus A320 Low Visibility Landing in Zürich.

GeeSussFreeK says...

ILS approach charts usually tell you about stuff like that so you can be ready before hand. You can't be spooked by stuff like that and expect to land 40tons of airplane safely. For fearful fliers like myself, ILS landing chats are usually available online so you know exactly what kind of landing to expect...every turn, every decent. Also helps you know when you are on final or a holding pattern.

Amazing footage of Rhino vs Buffalo

Chaucer says...

>> ^calmlyintoit:

jeez, no contest. I felt pity and a little frustration with that buffalo. What were they even fighting over?

rhino's have very bad eyesight and a brain that is primitive. If spooked they would likely charge. Water Buffalo's have very bad eyesight and a brain that is primitive. They are also in a constant state of being pissed off. So likely the buffalo saw something that looked like another buffalo and wanted to display dominance over it, which was a poor decision.

Seattle Hipster Racism Meets Cool Cop

bareboards2 says...

You are only proving my point that we live in a blatantly sexist world.

It is one of the saddest things in my life that more than 40 years after we as women (and enlightened men) started having the conversation about how denigrating it is for full grown women to be referred as girls -- and to simper coyly and call ourselves girls -- that it is even worse now than it ever was.

And here you show up, making fun of a serious topic as if you have the least notion of what the heck you are talking about.

How often do you hear males over age 17-19 as being referred to as "boys"?

Take a moment as you move through the world and give it some attention. Women are girls, men are guys or men or dudes. See how often it happens that women are called ONLY girls. Maybe consider changing your language and use the word "woman" once in a while and see how your world view shifts.

That is, if you are open to learning something. If you have an open mind. If you don't think that you have achieved perfection in your thinking process and know absolutely everything there is to know is this vast world.

If you tell me that you routinely refer to grown men as "boys" and I'll back off on you personally. Some people do. That's great, I have no beef with them.

But if you aren't "equal" in your use of language, then yes, you and your female friends are blatantly sexist, and unconsciously so.

I first had this conversation in 1974. At that time, it wasn't uncommon to call a black man a boy -- getting rarer, but it wasn't uncommon. Yet here we are, calling grown women "girls."

Sad, sad, sad, sad.

And you "lol."

Even sadder.

The video, by the way, has a great payoff at the end of a rambling conversation.

By the way, I just looked up and saw #28 on the list of videos expiring soon. "Anal Cunt 'I respect your feelings as Woman.' " Another thing that saddens me. Coon, nigger, spook, jiggabo -- all verboten. But Cunt? Used now more than ever.

Saddens me.

>> ^packo:

didn't watch the vid, didn't really care... the only thing that caught my interest was that calling women "girls" is blatant sexism... that made me laugh
primarily because more women i know refer to themselves in different ways as "girls" than guys refer to them
is this a new "n word"? lol

What an awesome creature! I know we have them here, but I have never seen one irl or moving like that. Mind, except for "Hinterland Who's Who". Giant skulls. Easily spooked, thankfully.
