Portugal. the Man, Weird Al - Who's Gonna Stop Me

moonsammy says...

I suspect Al's come to realize that any fans he's going to lose by taking a stand for what's right, aren't fans he needs. Prior to this year (to the best of my knowledge), he's never even hinted at dipping a toe into social commentary or politics.

Old Spice Rick and Morty Commercial

Fairbs says...

I'm guessing you're not in the target market?

so if you're not the type of person that likes old spice, it's still funny because it's kind of a social commentary and wouldn't cause you to dislike the show
and if you do like old spice, I guess you would see it as funny because it's so over the top so crazy man

haha..whats up drunky!
you nailed exactly why i post some of the more controversial videos in my que.

i have found that those of identify strongly with one politcial and/or cultural philosophy tend to stick in the same groups, the same spaces and receive their information from the same sources.

this applies to both the right AND the left.
we can use bobknight as an example when he regurgitates almost verbatim the current republican talking points.

but bob is an easy target.

the only thing i have truly been invested in of late is the greg elliot case.who was recently found not guilty and people have been saying its a victory for free speech.

but is it?
the man lost his job and is 100k in the hole for legal fees.

so while people can say this is a victory for free speech.i am less optimistic.some people could look at greg elliots case and decide to shut up if confronted.not make any waves and submit to the threat of legal prosecution.

of course there was a sifter who felt that because the video was from a right wing show, the content was worthless.which is a binary way of thinking that is very limiting, because it judges the speaker before the content and the discussion is ended before it has begun.

so my posting the rape game video was to bring awareness, not make a social commentary, and is also why i provided links to both a left and right take on the situation.

i would rather post a documentary or lecture on the subject, but most people nowadays want their information spoon fed to them in tiny, easy to consume, media bites no more than 5 minutes.

which is damn near impossible.
human interactions, cultures, religions and societies are complex and nuanced.it takes time to unpack all that information and digest the context.

ah well..what can you do...

anyways,
thanks for your comment and stay awesome brother!

The Nightman Cometh Special Edition

artician says...

Yeah I don't watch TV at all, this is completely foreign to me.

Educate me: I've heard of Rick and Morty ( vulgar Back to the Future ripoff cartoon, isnt it?) Why is that worth watching? Clever jokes? Social commentary?

Arrested Development is on my "to see" list, but I have yet to see it. What makes it worthwhile?

edit: Oh, and of course, I've never see this Sunny in Philadelphia show. Why is this worthwhile? This clip seemed like it could go either way, but it was meaningless to me without context.

Babymech said:

Wait what? Is this a serious question? Who the fucking fuck doesn't love Always Sunny? Am I missing something? Am I responding to a comment from 2002? How can someone not know and love IASiP?

It's the second-longest running live-action comedy in television history, and it's amazing ...do I also need to tell you to watch Arrested Development and Rick and Morty? Goddamn kids these days.

why is my video getting buried (Sift Talk Post)

enoch says...

@billpayer
you are proceeding from a false premise.
nobody is singling you nor your video out for suppression.
which many here have tried to point out to you.
quite politely i might add,but you insist on some weird conspiracy.

do you identify with a video so much that a downvote is somehow directly related to how that sifter perceives you? and that by downvoting they are suppressing your right to free speech and making a social commentary simultaneously?

dude...you need to think this through, because you are coming across extremely paranoid.

by the way...

Key & Peele: Office Homophobe

bareboards2 says...

I was uncomfortable with this video because I was afraid that it would be used as fuel for homophobia.

I upvoted because really, it is the most anti-homophobic thing out there. It dares to treat gay people as people. Fully, 100% people with a range of personalities.

As a woman, I wasn't offended by the "gayness" of the character, I was offended by the blatant sexual nature of his comments. All this chatter about gayness completely misses the point about what is appropriate behavior in the workplace. And in fact, all this chatter disturbs me deeply -- it is misdirection from the true "crime" here.

Equality is asking everyone to be treated EQUALLY. You don't talk about sex in the workplace like this -- not if you are gay or straight.

Having said that -- my male boss and I are completely inappropriate with each -- but NOT around anyone else. We have bawdy senses of humor and we crack each other up. As he said early on in our working relationship -- it isn't sexual harassment if it is UNWANTED sexual attention.

This guy's co-worker was plain in his language that he was uncomfortable and didn't want to hear sexually explicit stuff, and he wasn't homophobic in his comments. He was ignored. That was not okay.

The point was brought home by making him happily and openly gay and letting the chatty one have a moment of self-truth. Because yeah, he was an asshole.

Explaining comedy and social commentary is so boring.

Charlie Veitch Vs Hugo Boss

overdude says...

I'm sorry, I guess I maybe should have ticked the sarcasm box.

This wasn't a pro-tazer or anti-police comment; I was just thinking that getting to see this eff-tard writhe around in pain (not just via a tazering, but by any effective method) - even if only for a moment or two - would have been more enjoyable/rewarding than anything I saw in the 5 narcissism infused minutes of this video.

That's all. Nothing more. No deep analysis or social commentary was intended.

artician said:

I'm always surprised when someone is accepting of any use of force, especially when it's so completely uncalled for. The idea that tasers are even 'lawfully' allowed, you could say, shocks me.
There used to be a time when the police would simply explain the law to one side or the other. If he's in the right to film their store, the manager should go back inside and he'll eventually shut the fuck up. If, by some retarded legal standard (which I suspect would be close to reality), retail chains managed to pass a law forbidding members of the public from simply filming their stupid property, the police should just arrest him after he refuses to stop.
No tasers are necessary. Ever. Accepting their use is just climbing on board the lobotomy-wagon like everyone else who allows modern life to slide into the shithole.

Russell Brand to Jon Snow; "Listen you, Let me Talk"

chingalera says...

Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah blah blah. His social commentary works much better than his comedy schtick and this interviewer is a scripted, sell-out cunt. Listen to the fucking words being said, A-ten anis and the opinion not unlike the asshole common to all is but another rusty pore at the end of a shit-snake.

Finally, another interviewer who has attended the Piers Morgan institute of wanking cunts. He's a fucking tool with an agenda designed to keep slave-robots in their stupor. Period.

A10anis said:

Finally, an interviewer shows what an incredibly naive, vainglorious, empty headed moron Brand is.

Reverse Racism, Explained

More of a social commentary on common prejudices, really.

This Cannot Be Described (wait for it)

SDGundamX says...

I've watched the video a few more times now and checked out the band's other songs. I suspect based on the imagery and lyrics that the song is excoriating the Japanese government for its failures in Fukushima. The switch halfway through the song to decry Winny may be referencing the fact that despite the multiple fuck ups at Fukushima, the Japanese government last year was somehow able to get its shit together enough to pass a law criminalizing the downloading of copyrighted material.

This band is pretty cool. I've checked out their other songs and they also provide an interesting mix of social commentary and comedy. Thanks for bringing them to the Sift's attention.

Fantastic Toy Commercial For Future Girl Engineers

SDGundamX says...

GoldieBlox is being sued for the use of the Beastie Boys song in this clip. Turns out in his will Adam Yauch specifically asked that their works not be used for commercial purposes and the band('s lawyers) are honoring that request. Goldieblox will probably try to argue Fair Use but I think they're likely f'd because the primary purpose of this video is to advertise their products (the social commentary is incidental), which violates one of the factors of analysis the courts use in determining infringement.

Captain America 2 trailer

packo says...

Yeah, who wants to have special effects in a superhero movie... right!?!
on that note, the winter soldier storyline was one of the best (if not the best) Captain America storylines in 20+ yrs... with the recent infringement on personal freedoms/liberties in the states, this movie has a good opportunity to have some social commentary... is it going to be Citizen Kane? probably not, but a smart, entertaining, thrill ride? quite possibly. I'm looking forward to it

Citizen Kane, obvious special effects too... didn't see it (but really I did)

RoboCop - Reboot Trailer

kymbos says...

I don't know. The original was a masterpiece. The satire and social commentary was inspired.

To expect that much again is probably asking too much. The very reason they're rebooting everything is because they are self-evidently out of ideas.

Interestingly, has anyone noticed how children's flicks are not endless reboots? I mean, there are the obligatory 2nd and 3rd versions of successful films, but in the past decade or so they've put out a lot of new stories. Not so for original films for adults.
