Making a Cup of Tea with a Truck

Michelle Wolf at 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner

cloudballoon says...

Past Correspondents dinner roasts had much more bite than Wolf's and nary got 1/10th of the "controversy."

If I understand the situation correctly, the MOST "divisive" joke Wolf told was the "Smoky Eye" joke. The Right claims it's divisive & disgusting because it's a physical attack on Sanders? What the hell? In what context it's physical? The punchline is all political/fake-news rebuttal, not physical to me. It's not a comment of Sanders' physique/appearance. Wolf's not that cheap. IMO that joke was brilliantly delivered, unique and all hers. Most of the rest are not Wolf's best though. I've seen her jokes that are far more biting, I honestly think she toned it down already for the dinner.

Wolf made fun of her own body ALL THE TIME at Trevor Noah's Show and other comedy venues. That's a sign of self-confidence.

Besides, past Presidents (Dem AND Rep) also got chances to roast many people (themselves, others and a bit of self-loathing too) at these dinners too.

Comedy roasts ARE suppose to be non-PC. Taking the punches well actually humanizes the POTUS.

So THAT'S why power companies are supposed to trim trees

Same happened to poker in Poland. None of the legislators understood what it is, for them it was just gambling same to the one armed bandits in smoky bars, so they banned it... Similar thing happened to the betting legislation. Pity.

Girl does Melbourne Shuffle to Parov Stelar

A number of people have commented on the way this video was shot. They can't see anything or can't see her feet. The problem is with your eyes. I can see everything perfectly. I can also see that the backlighting through the window is probably deliberate and contributes a smoky hazy effect. It also makes her body movements stand out better. Watch her hands when they are in front of the wall as opposed to the window. A totally different effect.

And yes I love the breasts.

Five Men at Atomic Ground Zero

From Wiki. Plumbbob was a series of tests; this vid documents one of them. The only hard numbers about actual human disease rates in the Wiki entry needs a citation:

Plumbbob released 58,300 kilocuries (2.16 EBq) of radioiodine (I-131) into the atmosphere. This produced total civilian radiation exposures amounting to 120 million person-rads of thyroid tissue exposure (about 32% of all exposure due to continental nuclear tests).

Statistically speaking, this level of exposure would be expected to eventually cause between 11,000 and 212,000 excess cases of thyroid cancer, leading to between 1,000 and 20,000 deaths.[3]

In addition to civilian exposure, troop exercises conducted near the ground near shot "Smoky" exposed over three thousand servicemen to relatively high levels of radiation. A survey of these servicemen in 1980 found significantly elevated rates of leukemia: ten cases, instead of the baseline expected four.[citation needed]

Magic Pizza Reheat Method-Crispy Crust on Leftover/Delivery

JiggaJonson says...

Reheating cold pizza on the grill works wonderfully as well. You have to put some foil down to keep it from getting burnt, but it develops a nice smoky flavor that makes it often better than the original pizza u started with.

I've also heard of people throwing a wad of dough on the grill, cooking it on one side, flipping it over, and then adding sauce/cheese/toppings for awesome homemade grilled pizza, though I've never tried it myself.

Someone forgot to tell her that if you want to go viral and surprise people with your unassuming youthful talent you're supposed to do these videos live, standing in your kitchen, not lip-syncing to a pre-record, spotlit in a smoky studio.

[Edit] Lip syncing to a pre-record? I guess you missed the guy behind her playing the guitar? Perhaps you should look up the definition of lip syncing my friend. This is not it.

I take the point (but I don't see the relevance of the guitar behind her).
I was going by her proximity to the microphone (too much low end in the signal, unless whe was using an omni, which you certainly wouldn't want to use on a live video shoot in that environment with people moving around etc.*)

Note also that the info on this video says "The audio for this video was recorded live on the ice at the Centennial Sports Plex in Nashville, TN." whereas some of her others are at pains to say: "the audio for this cover was recorded LIVE with the video, in one take, with no pitch correction applied!" or "The audio and video for this recording were recorded simultaneously live with no studio overdubs or autotune." - Which to me also suggests a disconnect of audio and video (even if they we're both done in the same place!).

That said - it's actually irrelevant if it was recorded live or not. The point remains the same: I think a more raw lo-fi recording / video would create more interest rather than the relatively high / polished production values.

I was saying Boo-ooks.

Also I don't let my glasses stay empty for twenty minutes, but hey, if that's the way you roll then who am I to stand in the way of your effeminate ass? Maybe you should be drinking wine coolers.

Black coffee isn't sweet. That's a terrible analogy. Terrible. Terrible. Boo. Books.

But seriously, when I say bourbon I just mean Southern whiskey, so I mentally include Jack and Jim and all the the other ones. But you're right, there's a difference. I like Southern whiskey because the sweeter flavor is good on my palette. It's not super sweet, just slightly sweet to the taste. And if you finish a glass of neat whiskey (any type) and set the empty glass out for twenty minutes or so, you can smell the sweet notes or smokey notes. A good Woodford Reserve smells like vanilla.

Slightly oaky doesn't bother me at all. In fact, it gives whiskey a certain charm. I don't care for Scotch, because it's way too smokey. Though if I'm in Vegas and being a douche with a cigar, I'm drinking Scotch because it just works together.

I know bourbon is sweeter than scotch, but then a cup of black coffee is sweeter than scotch too. However, all bourbon is aged in charred oak barrels, and that does give it a hint of smoky flavor, which my sensitive palate can detect. That's why if I have to drink an American whiskey made mostly from corn I'll drink Tennessee whiskey, like Jack Daniels, because it's charcoal filtered. That helps remove a little more of the smoky flavor.

Fuck Kentucky and their fucking bourbon - unless I'm on a jag and there's nothing else around. I'll drink girly peppermint schnapps before bourbon, and that sweet, syrupy shit is pretty damn low on my list.

Now I know you're a Yankee. Bourbon isn't typically smokey. What bourbon are you drinking? It's typically made from mash and is sweeter.

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
Really? I kid about Canadian whiskey - Crown Royal, Pendleton, and Tangle Ridge are all great tasting, and even regular old Canadian Club and VO are pleasing to my palate. I know there are a few people out there who dismiss Canadian whiskey because they claim it's too 'light' in flavor, and for the cheap shit that's true. But a glass of good Canadian hooch, especially the higher end stuff like Gibson's and Wiser's, can stand toe to toe with whiskey made anywhere else on Earth, IMHO.

Scotch and bourbon both taste too smoky to me, but they'll do if there's nothing else around.

Lol, I've only had bourbon once and it didn't really impress me. I still haven't had any Canadian whiskey. Weird, eh?

I'll have to remember to try Macallan the next time I buy a bottle of hooch. For the money I don't think you can beat regular old Bushmill's. Last I saw, a fifth was priced around $22.00 American, and yet it tastes better than most whiskeys twice the price. Maybe you wouldn't care for Irish whiskey because they almost never use peat.

Back to the smoky variety, the best in that category IMHO is still Jack Daniel's. The difference between it an bourbon is that JD is charcoal filtered before it's casked. That mellows it some, yet still leaves distinctive character. All Tennessee whiskey is charcoal filtered, but Jack Daniel's is the best. It's a very popular brand for a reason.
In reply to this comment by Fusionaut:
Ahhh, I love the smokiness of scotch, but there are some scotches that have more sherry-like flavours than the peaty flavours. Aberlour's Abunudh is a nice one that only has a hint of peat. If you can get your hands on a MaCallan that's a really nice whiskey with no smoke at all.

Anyways, I'll see if I can taste some of that Gibson's or Wiser's soon. We can compare notes
