Finally, Jet Li and Jackie Chan in the Same Movie

9547 says...

"OK, I have this incredible scenario: Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie!"
"And...?"
"That's it. That's the scenario"
"That's short"
"That's OK. They'll just portray some stereotyped characters from their early career. Like, I don't know, a dead serious leader and a funny drunken guy"
"Who will they fight?"
"Whoever...we'll just rip off stuff everyone knows about but no one has seen, and call that 'homages'. They'll just fight East Chamber Qing guards led by, say, a bride with white hair, in never-before-seen places like a Chinese inn or a bamboo forest. And we'll add some tasteless bimbos here and there"
"Good enough"
"Also, Shaolin monks"
"What for?"
"I really don't know, but no stereotyped Hollywood kung-fu movie would be complete without Shaolin monks"
"Deal. But they need to speak English"
"And they all speak English. Wait. Actually, sod Chan and Li, they'll be the sidekicks, and the hero will be an American white male. An American Dragonball kid. It will be directed by the guy who did Stuart Little"
"Genius"

I predict it will suck. Unless you have actually seen Li's and Chan's period pieces, in which case it will suck TERRIBLY.

Rare Footage of Shaolin Monk Super-Humans

Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan

rembar says...

Chen style, dunno if I would call it "Shaolin" per se. Whenever I think of tai chi, I think more of old men in the park than of traditional uniforms and exhibitions.

Crazy gun handling and twirling - Marine Corps Silent Drill

Thylan says...

Oh, I agree its very hard to do right and well, and they have minimal margin for error with those bayonets. This strikes me as more circus routine, or a westernized version of the Shaolin martial prowess tours.

Tiny Shao Lin monks; big time martial artists

JTZ says...

Sure there is "a thing" called Shaolin kung-fu. Shaolin kung-fu are the martial arts developed or improved with in the 2 major Shaolin temples in China. These "arts" have been around for centuries, passing down for a long time within the temple walls. It also made it's way outside of the temples and it is taught in some form of Whushu. There are supposedly 72 basic forms for Shaolin kung-fu.

In the video the 3 kids demonstrated 3 of them, 1st being the "Tung Zi" which loosely translate to "young lad" it focus on the flexibilities of the human body. And as kids have the best flexibilities.
2nd is "Shaolin Fist" and 3rd is "TaiZu long fist" it's a form of long fist. "Long fist" being one of the most common martial art in all of China's history. A lot of different schools have forms of "long fist".

conan says...

There is no thing as "Shaolin Kung-Fu", although a lot of schools advertise with that term, just because it's popular. It describes a composition of various styles, loosly connected to the Shaolin temple. "The" Shaolin Kung-Fu wouldn't be possible because there are far too many basic styles (Tiger, Dragon, Snake etc.) and their various schools. Compare it to the term "car": It's just the common denominator for a thing, but more specific there are sedans, trucks etc and they all come as different brands. Same with the term Kung-Fu.

If i had to guess:

First kid is doing a Shandong Wushu form (not exactly sure, mainly because of using the head so much), second kid i'm pretty convinced does Hung Gar, which is the more common Kung-Fu style teached in western countries.

Super Awesome Real-Life Nintendo Punch-Out Movie

budzos says...

I've often thought about a "Punch Out" movie that uses lots of makeup effects and the "hobbit sizing" effect from LOTR to create the huge and grotesque opponents Mac faces. Get the Shaolin Soccer guy to direct it.

Kung Fu vs. Taekwondo- *match* [silent]

choggie says...

Love to see a group of Shaolin monks, having learned the rules of professional NFL football, take on a team in exhibition....better than a coliseum spectacle...and waaaaaay better than American footbal!

Shaolin Super Humans

rembar says...

The Youtube uploader' name matches the sifter's name. I think this is a pretty clear example of self-linking. *blog

On a separate note, I dislike ridiculous claims about Shaolin kung fu training and how awesomely superhuman those monks are. They're doing circus tricks in front of a camera for what amounts to a Chinese propaganda film.

To heck with the Asian mystique. These guys are like regular gym rats, except with ghetto equipment, poorer-quality training plans, and darker hair.

Parappa The Rappa - Chop Chop Master Onion

choggie says...

There are some Shaolin monks rollin' in their grave right now, having to watch kids play this game for all their bad karma....when finally the last copy of this aberration is gone and or does not load any longer, the monks will then re-incarnate, and trade another lifetime of suffering, for a past one......

[who would play this but N.Vietnamese children learning to love Kim????]

Like the boodah said, "Life bees suffering....."

12 Votes to Publish (Sift Talk Post)

James Roe says...

having talked to lucky it seems that I overestimated the difficulty of randomizing the queue on a per user basis. He assures me that it is not so difficult for a shaolin code ninja like himself. I am going to start a separate thread for that discussion. So that this one can maybe, hopefully return to a discussion about the increased queue escape.

looking at the front page 5/10 videos were published in the last 24 hours with one being less than 4 hours old. Since the last time we raised the queue escape we have had 620 members join. If only one percent of these members are looking at the queue that's still an additional 6 votes. Is it really all that bad?

Stephen Chow's Pulp Fiction Parody

Farhad2000 says...

This is a scene from <Ahref="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_chow">Stephen Chow's Sixty Million Dollar man, his other movies included <ahref="http://www.videosift.com/video/Shaolin-Soccer">Shaolin Soccer and <ahref="http://www.videosift.com/?domains=www.videosift.com&search=Kung+Fu+Hustle">Kung Fu Hustle and he is a very well known comedian in China. The scene parodies the famous dance scene in Pulp Fiction, which was Quentin Taratino's original homage to the dance scene from Bande à part by Godard.

Bruce Lee Interview, his opinion of kung-fu

NordlichReiter says...

He is fast, but i wonder if his speed would hit with force. In kung fu it is said that speed is every thing, it is not. Tai Chi does requite speed to throw an opponent, speed is not everything. Presence of mind, calmness of mind, and many more concentrative ideals are needed to practice and use Martial Arts.

I would argue that Kung Fu (kung fu meaning great skill or great art, or even great work) is not the best martial art, but coupled with grappling and boxing skills it would be great. There is no one martial artist who does not know how to adapt other styles to his skills. Kung Fu by meaning is not an style, there are so many styles, Chen Tai Chi, Wu Tai Chi, Mok Gar, Shaolin, Wushu, Wing Chun, Hsing I Chaun, Ba Kua (ba Qua). When kung fu is mentioned it usually means Chinese Martial Arts and only chinese martial arts, but with the true meaning of the words Great Skill (Kung Fu) it encompaces all things.

"In knowing one thing, Know all things."
Myomato Mushashi -Book of Five Rings

I prize any video with martial arts in it, because it gives me a chance to see different forms!

UPVOTE!!!!

Marko Zaror - The Latin Dragon

choggie says...

One thing pretty impressive is the size of this guy with respect to the physics of his Kung Fu combinations-He aint no low-center-of-grav chinaman!

That viddy link that someone posted here with the monk doing the one-fingered hand stand??? I have that entire viddy-It is the first time they let cameras into the northern Shaolin monastery, with a view to showing the world what goes on in there-(1969-70) Much nore amazing feats than the old monk.

I like his flamenco footwork incorporations.
