Thoughts and Prayers vs Drowning

cloudballoon says...

I remember seeing a live, ~30s version of the segment a long time ago, and I totally agree "thoughts & prayers" are worth less than nothing if you don't then tell what you're gonna do about it. Sometimes, those "thoughts and prayers" Christian contribute nothing positive, just full of hate and ego-boosting self-righteousness, and looks at the world as a zero-sum game.

Trump Announcement So Boring, Staff BLOCKED Crowd from Leavi

luxintenebris says...

ironically, the term "not a cult" comes to mind.

Colbert did a segment...

...that was pretty good coverage on the event (loved the 'snow storm' comment).

BTW: you can add Bud May to your list of GOP violent and/or sexual perverts...

...any odds on him being a maga-mutt?

Wow…holding the crowd against their will during the announcement!? A more desperate campaign move doesn’t come to mind.
Looks like the room seats around 300…they couldn’t find 300 people who wanted to be there. Ouch.
Must really sting that even Ivanka won’t endorse his candidacy.

Artemis launch to the moon

NASA's outdated SLS. Why does it exist?

eric3579 says...

"NASA's new rocket has been in development for over a decade, arguably it's a soft continuation from the Constellation program using the 5 segment boosters and Orion capsule that began development in 2005. It's been a slow, expensive ride with the contractors milking their cost plus contracts for their own benefit."
-Scott Manley

Makes it seem like NASA SLS is just providing jobs and not actually producing anything of value for each dollar spent. More telescopes, less rockets?

Nasa don't give them reasons to cut your budget or make politicians/public think you're less or unnecessary.

*promote the upcoming launch.

Tesla BLOWS AWAY Expectations. (Q2 2022 Recap )

luxintenebris says...

please. communist?

think about this: one of the cons of communism is if one person is getting all the benefits of working as not working - incentive is nixed.

w/all the mergers of segments of the business world - oil, media suppliers, etc - the effect mirrors communism. w/o serious competition, these companies have less incentive to improve products, increase efficiency, or reduce consumer costs.

to wit: most of the conservative policies are closer to communism than ideas like trust-busting, fair employee compensation, reasonable taxation for high earners, etc.

most of the 'progressive' ideas would spur capitalism, thus the blue is more about the green than the red is about keeping markets stable and healthy.

prefer the idea of regulated capitalism over death through fascism.

what led to '08?

anyway...if you're money is on Tesla*, good luck. good to see a body putting their money where their mouth is. and great to see you in favor of moving away from fossil fuels. investing in the future.

if we can get there.

FYI: interesting article about the marketing of tesla
https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/tesla-masculinity-study?utm_source=digg
from the skinny on the CEO, it is an absolute match.

BTW: keeping up w/the Jan 6 spankings? hard to buy the love of a loon, versus the safety of a nation. shakes a person to the core. all those serene conservatives w/o one iota of spine. if this is your idea of quality leadership - no Tesla stock is gonna fill the void of losing a homeland

Sipsmith Has Us Set for a Super Summer

A so-so segment by some lesser celebrity consistently assessed as scarcely satisfying.

Hey, that is fun. Plus I don't mind James Cordon all that much, I just savour the sass.

Almost as much as I savour this delicious Hendricks gin. Screw you, Sipsmith!

@bcglorf open trans people are .6% of the population (.7% of 18-24). When over 2% of pinnacle athletes dominating their sports are trans, come back and we’ll talk. Until then, you’re barking at clouds.

You do understand this isn’t real, right? The way you talk, I could believe you believe this is a documentary.

So you aren’t confused, I do think private competitions should make their own rules as they see fit, but any sport that uses public funding, including school sports, cannot exclude a segment of the population from participating based on assumed group characteristics. Not in America.

Demi Moore Does One Armed Push-Ups!

cloudballoon says...

I though so too. Watching the red carpet segment just before the Oscars, both my wife & I were talking about how great Jada looks bald (we don't pay attention to celebrity news, and we had no idea she got Alopecia before the slapping scandal).

I went bald once (accidentally) and due to the shape of my head, bald just doesn't look good on me, so I kind of envious of people like Jada, the Rock, etc. I'm weird I know.

newtboy said:

Better than I could do in my prime.

I think she looks pretty good…I thought Jada looked good too. Makes me wonder why “looking forward to GI Jane 2” was seen as an insult.
Unless you have a weird shaped head, bald is beautiful.

When Live TV Goes Wrong...

Will Smith Making Bald Jokes Doesn’t Age Well

luxintenebris says...

probably a small segment of the viewing populace understood 'g.i. jane' reference. even smaller knowing the hair loss issue. being hollywood - the joke was mild by ricky jarvis' standards - and having come out w/her problem, was it any worst than...
- richard pryor addressing his first audience after he blazed himself, "y'all did some nasty ass jokes on my ass - oh yeah y'all didn't think i saw some of these mfers..." then did the lit match joke.
- paul reubens' "Heard any good jokes lately?"
- and the numerous running jokes about letterman's marriage/relationship after the extortion revelation
...they humbled themselves and rode it out.

but whada i know about it? wouldn't likely to be hired on as a variety reporter but thought jim carrey's take was the best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdofcQnr36A

"My Cooch Is Dying"

New Rule: Words Matter | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

newtboy says...

I think you are making the mistake of believing all on the left believe what the most extreme far lefties do.

Yes, some have attacked Chappel, but far more leftists have come to his defense….I will. What I’ve heard is FAR from transphobic.
He doesn’t limit that to Islam, all religious extremists are prone to violence, so only a select few looking for Islamophobia call it that, IMO.
Only the insane trans community thinks trans women are full 100% women. I ignore people like that. They don’t live in reality. I’m not alone on the left thinking that.
Edit: I misunderstood…sorry. Yes, the far left “feminist” segment does think fair trial=don’t believe the women. That’s insanity….as is thinking you should lock people up based on one person’s unverified accusation. I think most leftists think you should investigate any claim of abuse and bring charges when appropriate, not just outright believe every one.

Yes, I think you’re wrong. Those have been attacked by extremely tiny, but vocal minorities on the very far left, not main stream leftists nor centrists. Just as all on the right aren’t raving lunatic Trumpists that gladly put orange daddy before reality, country, and democracy, all on the left aren’t as you’ve described them….very few are.

@newtboy,

thanks for clarification.

So in your view, do you see the left objecting to any of the following things that kinda speak to Maher's point, and I think fits to the point of the 'left' being upset with him,

-Defending Chapelle which left would decry invoking their definition of dog whistle, transphobia...
-Pointing out a correlation between violence and Islamic extremism which left would decry as islamophobia
-Believing sports/olympics should divide competitors based on biological sex rather than gender identity == Transphobia
-(Big any famous celebrity accused of sex crimes) and suggesting they deserve a fair trial == failure to believe victims/survivors

Those are all things that have been pretty commonly defended by large groups of the left from what I've been seeing. Am I wrong?

New Rule: Words Matter | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO)

cloudballoon says...

That's a gem in this segment of the show.

Of all the things I don't agree with Maher (recently of the Mask Mandate, sooooooooo misinformed and/or self-centered, he's part of the prolonged problem), I must say, his fixation on not cancelling anyone and while urging people not being snowflakes are right stands for me. As much as a "political opposite" some people are to me, I'm actually far more interested in the reasons behind why they take those stands, whether they care to explain themselves or not (because, come on, we KNOW American culture breeds goats and they can only parrot what their political/religious/news/social media overlords tell them without understanding the ulterior motives behind their words & actions). I've long given up expecting one half of the population to be able to articulate thoughts.

His shows are still able (willing?) to invite "both sides" to the table. For that, his shows are worth watching.
